Imprison him, absolutely. But really hurt him: fire him for cause. There go all those cushy, six-figure tenure benefits. Now he's just another unemployed/unemployable black man with a criminal record...
I had read that story earlier and missed that it wasn't two females. I just assumed it was I guess. What an ass. Agree about the jail time, a few weeks might give him time to reflect on his cowardice.
"It was a very unfortunate event," he said afterwards. "I didn't mean for it to explode the way it did."
Translation: "Black Priveldge."
He's sorry only for the consequences, not for the thought & action that lead to them....which he presumes are his "right."
I slugged a cop once in 1963 (inadvertantly to some degree). I went to jail. I proferred no defense and plead out in full....and received probation. I was sorry both for the thoughts and action as well as the consquences, in that order. It was embarassing.
Given that this guy knew his victim, he needs jail time. When I repeated my indiscretion later on, elsewhere, my "record" followed me, and I received 10 days. Doubly embarassing....not to mention I nearly missed final exams at school. Likkor clouds thought, and if your thoughts are hostile to begin with, you should pay...for both abuses. Good enough for me, good enough for him.

I disagree with Earl. While he should definitely receive the full civil and criminal penalties of the laws of the County of New York, I would not fire him.
A college professor who cares sufficiently about his curriculum to get in a fistfight off campus(even if he did screw up and have it with a girl) is not to be fired -- assuming he did feel the full force and majesty of the County of New York.
What are you on about? He feels THIS strongly about architecture???? And the design of buildings and their siting has what to do regarding race relations?
Nope. This guy is a privileged, tenured, entitlement-fixated floater. I've met his type innumerable times before. He allegedly committed a criminal code offence against a co-worker. Cut him loose for cause.
/Earl chuckles at the passion that is Howard Roark's, and the loopiness that is Dagney Taggart (viz., "But so long as I choose to go on living, I cannot desert a battle which I think is mine to fight blabbity, blabbity, blabbity" for another 73 pages).
I'm still amazed there was a man in that New York City bar who protested that "You don't hit a woman!"
This is assault and battery, not a trivial offense. The description of the attack, that he PUNCHED her in the FACE loudly enough to be heard throughout the bar, is shocking. If a skinhead had done it, he'd be skinned and his hide displayed on Morgenthau's wall.
I'd also love to know the substance of their argument, which is carefully elided from this account.

Maybe he needs sensitivity counseling...

He knew her. It WAS personal.
Srsly...mah violin iz brok.
Of course. And you know that I am not.
Actually now, subjecting this schmuck to a 30 day sensitivity training course, in, oh, say, Hayden Lake, Idaho, might be a harsher punishment.

#10 Earl: You're right -- I had thought (should have reread) that he was a black studies guy.
Who does he think he is? Howard Roark?
OMG, is he a Howard Roark wannabe? Hey, say what you want about Ayn Rand, her characters didn't sucker punch women.
