A Trip to the Farmer's Market

Late Saturday morning we headed out to the Farmer's Market in Olympia. I had high hopes for the place as our realtor just raved about it when we met her last November.

Tom was kind enough to be the photographer and I did the shopping. The first hint that it might not be an optimum experience was when we stepped out of the truck to oppressive heat. I mean Southern California heat.

Click on pictures for full size.

Here is the facade ~

Once we got inside, the first booth we saw was tie-die! This photo doesn't convey the sheer volume of tie-dyed clothing, there were easily 8 tables heaped with the stuff!

It was a bit cooler inside ~

This was a beautiful display. I couldn't bring myself to pay these prices but if I had my own garden I would have loved to buy the Corylus avellana 'Contorta', commonly called a corkscrew hazel or contorted filbert. This small tree, also known as Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, is truly a "plant for all seasons" with it's double-toothed, light green leaves, followed by fuzzy yellow, long-lasting catkins, edible fruits and finally the twisted, contorted branches that provide a striking centerpiece or backdrop in the winter garden.

Lots of delicately scented hand-made soaps and fizzy bath salts ~

I know better than to buy at the first booth. But I specifically needed some sugar peas and this guy had some great-looking organic produce with pretty labels. I should have been suspicious that he had no prices on those labels. When he handed me the little 1# bag of peas, IN THE SHELL, for $8.00, I was too stunned to hand them back. stunned.png

Now my enthusiasm is starting to go as fast as my cash. So I just "window-shopped" through the next few aisles...

Heavenly lavender ~

Cannas and other tropicals ~

Metal yard ornaments, I'm not so crazy about this stuff ~

Sure enough, once I got away from the entrance I found several booths with sugar peas for $4.50 #. mad.png

Mmm, mmm ~

Meat!
I was a little surprised to see this display from a local smokehouse as we are in the midst of hippy-burnout- and hippy-wannabe-ville.

I had read about this booth - a local pastry chef who creates beautiful hand-dipped chocolates ~

DSC01132.jpg

I love peanut brittle but it was $6.50 for a 4-ounce bag. 4 OUNCES!!! That's about 2 1/2 pieces!?!

Washington state has the best salmon and halibut ~

DSC01133.jpg

This was my favorite display. Check out the deep purple-mottled lettuce in the lower left corner ~

DSC01134.jpg

I thought of Mrs. Lewis and her crafts in this section. I think her creations are as nice or nicer than what fetched a pretty penny here ~

More displays ~

Our Walla Walla onions are the best in the world!

There was entertainment for the shoppers. They don't look happy, do they? That's because they really, really want to impeach Bush...and get rid of the meat display.

DSC01144.jpg

Here are my goodies for a grand total of $43.35. This includes a little container of blackberry honey.

We had the berries for dessert that night. The amusing thing was that the next day we decided to head south (more rural) and look at houses for sale. We spotted a road-side strawberry booth from the same farm where we bought the berries the day before. At the Farmer's Market they were $6 a pint; at the little booth I got 2 pints for $4!! Now that's more like it!

All in all, I would say that the Farmer's Market is strictly a tourist trap but it was still a nice way to pass the time on a hot Saturday afternoon.
