'Sardari's List'

Uncle Sardari is Iran's Oskar Schindler

In June 1940, embassies were transfered from Paris to Vichy which had become the capital of the new French Government. Nevertheless in each embassy residence in Paris a caretaker was left behind. Uncle Abdol Hossein Sardari, my mother's youngest brother, pictured left, who was in charge of consular affairs remained in the former French capital, now occupied by German Nazi military forces.
At that unfortunate time many Iranian Jewish families lived in Paris. My uncle who liked to entertain, established close contacts with the German authorities and at the outset made it clear to them that Iranian jews were Iranians since the time of Cyrus the Great and therefore fell under the protection of Iranian laws like any other Iranian. He added that it was the reason why religion was not mentioned in Iranian passports. A letter was sent to my uncle by the German ambassador in Paris assuring him that no Iranian citizen would ever be harmed. As a result, the Iranian jews of Paris were not subjected to the special nazi measures against the Jews.

When in 1942 round ups of Jews started, and news regarding the "final solution" began to spread, the head of the Iranian Jewish community, contacted my uncle about his french co-religionists who were in danger of being sent to concentration camps. My uncle had in his office had a good supply of blank Persian passports. He took upon himself to also issue them to non-Iranian Jews who were facing deportation. As Allied forces invaded Iran, our ambassador in Vichy ( Anoshiravan Sepahbody whose spouse was Sardari's brother) departed leaving Sardari in care of Iranian interests in Paris and all communications with Tehran cut. Refering to the humanitarian attitude of Cyrus the Great who had freed in 500 BC the Jews held captive in Babylon, Sardari had no doubt that the Shah and the Iranian government would confirm his decision after the war.

I was a diplomat in Paris during 1948 when the Iranian Jewish community (with its newly added "citizens') visited my uncle and offered him a silver plater signed by their leaders, as a token of their deep appreciation and gratitude. Sardari had also saved in extremis from the Gestapo Mr. Petrossian a well-known importer of caviar who had contacts with the French resistance.

My uncle later became chargé d'affaires in Brussels. ln the mid-fifties he joined the National Iranian Oil Company and passed away in London in 1981.

How many Jews were saved? This is a wonderful story! It would be amazing if he saved more Jews in France than are even in Iran today.

#2 kianb at 8:10 am on Jul 11, 2005

Juahara: Unfortunately I don't know exactly how many lives he saved, but given the fact that Mr. Sardari "... had in his office a good supply of blank Persian passports", I can say many!

Interesting. There must be statistics of number of Iranians living in Paris at that time too. I did not understand the relation of Hoveyda the ex prime minister of Iran who was executed by this regime to Mr. Sardari? Also I know majority of old Bahais were Jews converted to bahaism, same goes for Hoveyda. Religions...such a tangled web we weave around ourselves.... Thanks Kian.

#4 kianb at 9:26 am on Jul 11, 2005

Roya: The writer of this piece is Fereydoon Hoveyda, the younger brother of Amir Abbas (ex-prime minister). And as he wrote: "Uncle Abdol Hossein Sardari, my mother's youngest brother,.. " we can conclude that Mr. Sardari is Hoveydas' uncle (دایی).

Roya, you sound alot like ali sina. Have you been to his site?

#6 Frank IBC at 10:15 am on Jul 11, 2005

Roya -

I know majority of old Bahais were Jews converted to bahaism

That's very interesting.

If I gave you a surname of an Iranian friend who is Bahai would you be able to determine if he had Jewish roots?

#7 Jauhara at 10:45 am on Jul 11, 2005

Roya, I am adding your website in my links. I used to follow the Iranian blog of a young girl who titled her site Blue Bird. I haven't been there for awhile. I hope she is okay.

Frank IBC: Some families are famous yes, but generally you can't make a definitive judgement on that.

#9 Frank IBC at 12:00 pm on Jul 11, 2005

What about the surname "Mohtadi"?

#10 kianb at 12:06 pm on Jul 11, 2005

"Mohtadi" I never heard of it! Maybe this is a Bahai family name. I think Roya knows better ;-)

There is no definite way to tell who was Jew but majority were Jews, thats why Jewish community in Iran does not like the Bahais cause they converted first, now Bahais are all over the world andof all race and nationaity. But old Iranian ones were at one point Jewish. Also Jauhara I read that songfor Islma., I disagree since if Mohamamd had slept with the girl or all other 1000 women they accuse him of then how come he only has one child from one woman(Khadijeh) and that is Fatimah? I hate rumors and I could mae a song for other religions acusing their prophets for killing, wrong doings and this and that. Lets respect people's beliefs and let each worship God the way they feel more comfortable. At the same time lets fight with terrorists not Islam or other religions.
So Kian if Mr. Sardari was Jewish then it proves my point that Jews converted to bahaism, as his sister and Hoveyda's father converted. I hope this regime is toppled and all reliongs can practice frely in Iran. Even betre than during the Shah's time. Also I hope all Abadanis own a Ray Ban glasses one day!!;-)

#17 kianb at 5:34 pm on Jul 11, 2005

Roya I don't see anywhere that Mr. Sardari was either Jew or Bahai. As far as I know there is also no evidence that Hoveyda family were Bahai. I think mullahs used that phrase to prosecute them. But that's only what I know.

#18 roya at 6:16 pm on Jul 11, 2005

Hoveyda was Bahai for his father was Bahai,I know that for a fact. He himseld did not totally covert thou grew up as one, same as my ex usband, his father was Bahai and he did not convert. Bahaism is a religion that you cant not be born into it,you have to decide and convert after 18 years old.My aunt was NOT a Bahai and mullahs killed her accused of being a Bahai.

#19 roya at 6:35 pm on Jul 11, 2005

and also what do you mean by his spouse was sardari's brother?

A Constitutional Monarchy is the best inclusive political system that Iran has ever had and will ever have since it preserves individual rights, protects minorities and women, embraces progress and secularism and makes the throne (man or woman) the symbol of Iranian unity amongst its diverse ethnic communities and projects through the throne our rich culture and history to the world.

Let's work together whether you are Republicans, Constitutionalists, progressists, rightists and advocates of all stripes. It is in our collective interest to work towards a practical solution in these dire times to free our motherland.

May be in the end a Constitutional Monarchy will be rejected but we are not in front of the ballot boxes to cast that vote yet. Let's coalesce and unite to bring the IRI down so that together we can build a better Iran.

Please read the 1906 constitution and you will find it to be a valuable text that paved, paves and will continue to pave the way for a modern Iran that we all would love to see re-emerge from its ashes.

The monarchy did a great deal to improve our lives in Iran under the Pahlavi's. That fact nobody can deny. But we all had to sacrifice our individual freedoms to reach a certain level of development and growth. The child is grown and fully understands what it has to do for itself and its future. Let's work in a productive way to see that day to come about.

In the end we are all Iranians and love our country. The danger is here and now and it is called the Islamic Republic of Iran which is another way for saying the "Second Arab invasion of Persia".

Let's defeat the Farsi speaking Arabs and reclaim our Aryan identity.

Payandeh Iran.
