Let's see how long it is until left-wing race merchants (especially among the black community) find a way to blame this on the white interloper Jooooos (to quote Al Sharpton).

Two weeks ago, Lovett's 14-year-old daughter, Cheryl Green, was standing with a group of friends on Harvard Boulevard, just south of 206th Street, when two men approached them in broad daylight. Without saying a word, one suspect pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Green and wounding three others, witnesses and police said.

"This reminds me of a really bad time in the history of this country," Hahn said. Yet "here we are in Los Angeles, in 2006."

Residents say the Latino gang has terrorized their neighborhood for years and in some instances has forced them to change where they shop, how they commute, even how and when they step outside their homes. They say they feel confined to a three-street area, stretching south from 207th to 209th streets, between Western and Denker avenues.

"They circle the block and see if anybody's out and if there is, they come back and start shooting," Johnson said. "They're always looking around for somebody."
Great example of family values!

Right. Now I remember why I moved to Oregon. I had completely forgotten.

Black "activists" like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and white liberals will ignore this. They'll continue insult and intimidate whites. They'll stand up for black criminals and thugs but not decent, law-abiding black people. And (most) white conservative politicians won't stand up for victims of illegal immigrants (and their children) because offending people or "losing the Hispanic vote" is worse than Americans (of any race) being victimized by invaders.

A "minor disturbance" in Fontana a few months ago:

Race riots are a common occurance (at least one a year, sometimes two or three) at both Fontana high schools, despite full-time police presence. Part of the problem is that both schools are located in overwelmingly Hispanic areas and the local Hispanic kids are highly resentful of blacks being bussed into "their" neighborhoods.

Like Derb says, this country already has one race problem, which so far has proven to be resistant to all social-engineering attempts to solve it, and now the elites are hell-bent on importing another one.

Actually I'd argue that it's because of the first social-engineering attempts that the current race problem exists. The pre-Civil Rights era had problems, but in retrospect, the "solutions" have led to far more racism, suffering, black poverty and hatred than ever existed back then.

Inland prison remains on lockdown
The Saturday morning riot, which left 51 inmates injured, capped a second year marked by racial tension in the Chino prison and other prisons and jails statewide. Though inmates lined up by race during Saturday's fighting, officials have not determined whether the riot was racially motivated. It's not unusual for factors such as crowding, gangs and racial tensions to contribute to prison violence, said Lt. Mark Hargrove, prison spokesman.

The fighting started between two inmates, one black and one Hispanic, and when the riot was over, there were only five makeshift weapons found. These facts would hint that the violence was spontaneous, Hargrove said.

The injuries were concentrated among black inmates -- the prison's minority population. Of the 27 inmates who were hospitalized, all but three are black. One of the three is Hispanic, and two are white. Such numbers would usually indicate an organized attack by one race-based gang against another, he said.

In December, the prison dealt with a smaller riot involving 60 black and Hispanic inmates. The prison had two riots in June divided along similar racial lines and a 200-inmate riot between blacks and Hispanics in 2005.

Socialism and affirmative action both provide a disincentive to achieving excellence, by rewarding mediocrity.

The "solutions" have certainly made the problem infinitely worse than it would be otherwise. I wonder, in what state the interracial relations (and yes, I've engaged in those) would be now, if the monster of "Great Society" had not been Frankensteined into being.

OTOH, there's Derb's Great Syllogism to consider. Which argues that pure meritocracy will lead to racial statification by class, and that "affirmative action" is an attempt to offset social instability thus generated.

Our political classes, who of course know all that I have been saying here, had a plan to finesse the situation by simply “regularizing” the illegals, thus at least removing the stigma of law-breaker from them. That plan went up in the smoke of 9/11.

If only.

That's Derb thinking like a mathematician. The reality is more complicated. The Bell Curve does a much more sophisticated analysis of race, IQ, and the implications of different approaches to public policy.

Fuzzy stratification based on merit, in which those with skills rise to the right level regardless of their colour, would be vastly better than the thought-control regime we've currently reached, in which we all agree to pretend that what we see all around us doesn't exist, or exists by coincidence.

Employees find noose hanging at work

NEW YORK (CNN) -- James Jackson, a 26-year-old black employee of 180 Connect, was preparing for another day of installing cable, telephone and Internet service to residential customers of Cablevision in Nassau County, New York on December 7.

When he walked to the fenced-off area to pick up equipment for the day's jobs he looked up and was shocked to see a vicious, racist symbol in his workplace. A noose was hanging in the fenced-off equipment area, visible to the dozens of installers, the majority of whom are black, but accessible only to his boss and an equipment manager, both of whom are white.

Cablevision has deep pockets, don't ya know.
#21 gutterfiend at 4:06 pm on Jan 05, 2007
You know, I've never considered a noose to be an expressly racist symbol. I get the connection to lynchings and all that, but blacks have hardly been the only people to be executed by hanging. I would think it would be construed as more of a threatening gesture than anything else.

The principal of Churchill High School, a college-preparatory powerhouse in Potomac, sent an e-mail apology last night to the community, acknowledging racial insensitivity in her handling of a fight at the school this week.

Principal Joan C. Benz acknowledged she had offended parents and students in an earlier letter, sent home with students yesterday, which described rising tensions on campus culminating Wednesday in a fight in front of school. In that letter, Benz wrote, "Every incident revolving around this two-month ordeal has been Black-on-Black violence."

In her apology, Benz wrote, "I did not intend to single out one group of students in a negative light. I am particularly sorry that my choice of words reflected racial insensitivity."

Maybe threatening, but I can certainly believe that the manager merely intended it as a bit of black humor. Er, I mean dark humor... or rather, make that gallows hum-- oh, no, wait...
#30 gutterfiend at 4:18 pm on Jan 05, 2007
The president of the Montgomery County branch of the NAACP yesterday contested the racial references in Benz's letter.

"It's inflammatory," Henry Hailstock said in a telephone interview. "It's a statement that should not have been said. . . . I don't think any administrator should be making statements as insensitive as that."

Rather than singling out the students as African Americans, Hailstock said, Benz "needs to be trying to build coalitions." He added that the county group's parent council will contact the school system to discuss the issues of violence and the dress code.

I wonder if Mr. Hailstock would be so concerned about sensitivity had the incidents been white on black violence.

After reading the comments on La Shawn's post about the prevelance of black-on-hispanic violence in other parts of the country, it appears that the victim/victimizer roles depend on which ethnic gangs have numerical superiority.

Yeah, I can believe he was just messing around. While hanging a noose from the ceiling and joking about hanging employees is in poor taste, I really don't understand why one's initial reaction upon seeing it would be OMG RACISM!!!!

In DC's metro system, pensions are based on your last years' salaries, INCLUDING OVERTIME. So as a result, employees in their last years take overtime up the wazoo.

No wonder the Metro system is broke.

Pensions are evil.

Well, maybe.

When the federal government, in its infinite wisdom, eliminated the income tax deduction for medical expenses (specifically health insurance expenses) for the self-employed (which my dad has been since he left the Navy in 1968), my mother got a job with a county agency specifically for the health insurance package and the pension plan. She can retire with full benefits in about two years.

But, because of the shocking incompetence of her agency's new administrative "team", she's not sure she wants to wait that long.
