Franco, I take my coffee black, so no sugar, etc, are involved.
But I really do hope it comes back. The mouse I I am suffering with, now was made by Microsoft, for Micron, and it is the worst I have ever held, for comfort.
The damn thing is shaped in an almost 45 degree curve, and when my hand is in my most comfortable position, my forfinger is over the right button, instead of the left. This is like carpal tunnel syndrome in two easy days.

OK. Cancel the call to Myth Busters, I now have sufficient evidence that a single cup of hot, black coffee will kill an optical mouse.
I also have sufficient evidence that it is a good thing to have an old but unused mouse in the house, for when you do kill your optical mouse.
This thing is terrible, by the way. I hope my laser mouse works again when it dries out, but I don't have much hope.
Rinse it out. The damage won't necessarily come from getting wet, but when the sugar, etc. dry up and gum up the works.
