The U.S. national championships in gymnastics are this week, and as usual Bela Karolyi will be serving his sport as its "ambassador, fundraiser and chief cheerleader", as Rachel Blount puts it in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Which means lots of stories from the man who coached Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug.
Ms. Blount tells one of them: After he and his wife defected to the U.S. in 1981, the Romanian struggled to find a coaching job, and then battled the language barrier once he did.
"Karolyi was determined to learn English, and when a man called him a son of a bitch, he and Martha looked up the words in the dictionary," Ms. Blount writes. " 'He called me a puppy?' Karolyi thought. Shortly after starting his new coaching job, Karolyi surveyed the kids in the gym and proudly referred to them as 'my little sons of bitches.' He had to explain to outraged parents that he meant it as a term of endearment."
Fay, there's a part about Bela Karolyi, it's what ev quoted up there :-)
Ah, thank you...

There's a supposed healthcare crisis with regard to medical malpractice costs. However, the facts don't seem to support the idea of a crisis. For example, total healthcare expenditures in 2001 were $1.42 Trillion dollars. Medical Malpractice expenditures were $7.3 billion - less than one half of one percent of medical expenditures. (From 2001 US Census) That one half of one percent figure doesn't sound like a crisis to me.

That's baloney. He's speaking from the perspective of a trial attorney.

What does that even mean - "total healthcare expenditures"?!
I'm talking about the Doctor. How much are his expenditures on malpratice insurance vs. his expenditures on everything else?
I know for a fact that many ob-gyn doctors are not delivering babies any more, if they can help it. I was speaking to someone in the field the other day, and he said that there are many fewer doctors who want to go into that area - partly because the responsibility is for 2 patients, and statute of limitations for the child was only recently reduced from 21 years to 10 in NY state, form what I understood him to say.

LOL!
Similar "confusion" in Korean...the inflection when saying it makes the difference between "Puppy" and SOB. (....or BBQ for that matter, in some circles)

Yeah, Bela bella!
Is that a RT yet ..?
The hippo rising?
No, it isn't! (That one is annie's too :-)
Yes, the hippo rising. :-)
I see that it's not, yet.
Now it is.
Excellent. :-)
With all this stuff we've added/changed, we really need to rewrite the faq. And we should make it less funny and more useful.
I vote for more funny and more useful.
That's true. I volunteer for the job of suggesting people to do it for us.
I'll supervise you.
So you're volunteering? (You don't have to do the whole thing, you can do a section about something we don't have in there.)
Do I get to delegate too?
Supervising sounds good to me..
I'll supervise you.
Excellent. We make a good team :-]
Okay, so I supervise ev, ev suggests people and joem delegates. So far, so good. Now we need victims.
Excellent. We make a good team :-]
I see you grinding your teeth.
Let's volunteer people who aren't here.
I'll volunteer Amy F.
I'll volunteer Amy F.
So if you volunteer them and they're not here, you'll be picking up their slack, right? It's a deal.
I see you grinding your teeth.
I was chewing something!

You're good, zorkie - you're very good.
I was chewing something!
Don't choke on it!
LOL!

You should see me with kindergarteners. I rob them of their lunch within minutes.
But I'd rather be writing (and testing) code than either managing or writing documentation.
Don't choke on it!
Well stop elbowing me!
You should see me with kindergarteners. I rob them of their lunch within minutes.
You are good.
LOL, your talent at testing is supernatural! :-)
And I would rather be in Jamaica, drinking mojitos (or whatever it is they drink in Jamaica).
LOL!
Check out the picture of this cat: Sebastian the cat gets 'grilled'
900 bucks a tooth! Wow.
Sorry, that just seems a bit much - for a a cat ..
Yeah, but the owner was the dentist so I'm sure he paid wholesale. The real expense is all in the labor anyway with American medicine.
I'd be scared to have that cat around me. I'd see those teeth and those eyes in the dark, and I'd pee my pants, I know it.
I thought it was in the malpractice insurance.
You'd be scared without the gold teeth.
Yeah, I would be. Cats creep me out.
I'm off to bed, good night everyone :-)
Good night zorkie mou, oneira glika :-)
Layla tov, zorkie.

I agree, more funny and more interesting.
And yes, I do that we "early to bed, early to rise" types don't get a lot of say, since most decisiions are made while we are snoring.
Ditto for us "late to bed, late to rise" sorts, Dances :-)
hey, as long as I don't have to work on it...
