BREAKING: Major Plane Bombing Plot Foiled

This one was big-zorkie says that on the Greek news right now they're saying they wanted to bring down 12 planes.

Airline terror plot 'foiled'

BRITISH police have reportedly foiled a plot to smuggle explosive devices in airline hand luggage to blow up planes in mid-flight, according to Sky News in London.

The targets were said to have been flights between the Britain and the US.

Overnight police have arrested a number of people in London.

Sky said the Metropolitan Police arrests were the culmination of a big covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.

It followed a pre-planned intelligence led operation by the Met's anti-terrorist branch and security service.

Police said they believed the aim was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board the aircraft in hand luggage.

"We would like to reassure the public that this operation was carried out with public safety uppermost in our minds," a police statement said.

"This is a major operation which inevitably will be lengthy and complex. We will provide further information as soon as possible."
Security dramatically tighter in UK's airports: can't bring any on-board luggage
Passengers will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK, the department said.

Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

"We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only," the statement said.

BBC journalist Joe Lynam encountered the increased security measures at Gatwick airport.

"I was handed a piece of paper saying that pretty much nothing could be taken on board the plane," he said.

"Everything had to be checked in and that includes mobile phones, ipods, wallets - even spectacle cases had to be checked in."

Bigot! Did you see the word Muslim even once in either of the stories I linked to? C'mon, I'll pay you a dollar for each instance of the word "Muslim" that you can find. Obviously, the media's reticence is due to the fact that they don't want anyone to realize it was JEWS.

The newscaster was trying really hard to get the correspondent in London to say what was the nationality of those arrested. The guy said "they were all British citizens." The newscaster asked again, "ok but what was their nationality?" The other guy goes "we don't know, they haven't said."

not even medications?

wow, as an asthma patient, I need to puff my inhalre on take off and landing, who also has a pancreas problem and MUST take medicine with my food, or it could be very very bad, as my pancreas doesn't work wihtout them. I'd be sooooooo upset.

If all that is true, then I will not be able to fly, unless I put everything in plastic bags?

I'm sorry folks, but we HAVE to profile muslims, they are the ones causing the problems.

excuse my language HOLY F*CK!!!

Lots of goodies for baggage handlers to steal, as you can no longer lock your luggage.

THESE will be popular for flights maybe? I wonder if they would be acceptable??

Will other airports in other countries start this? I wish EL Al flew from USA/Denver To Helsinki when I go to Finland.

I like Steve H.'s new tagline: -- Islam: the Sole Reason it Takes an Hour to Get on a Plane -- (after he wrote this entry):

Another thought I had this weekend: if it weren't for one religion--Islam--it would take five minutes to board a plane. Another fine fact for Muslims to be proud of. No one ever bought a metal detector to keep Jews from blowing up planes. No one ever strip-searched a Mormon with the serious expectation of finding a bomb. Only the sick cult known as Islam makes these things necessary. Nice religion, folks. Stand tall.

It's true, a tiny percentage of airplane terrorist attacks involved non-Muslims. But the huge, throbbing airline security industry is almost purely a response to Islam. Allah akhbar, people. Way to go. Mohammed would be proud.

Well, I guess he WOULD be proud. He was a thief who beat his wife and had sex with a nine-year old, according to Muslims themselves.

#13 annie at 11:37 pm on Aug 09, 2006

I can't help feeling a bit of schadenfreude at the British. Besides Tony Blair and a couple of politicians who have been goof friends of Israel and the US, the rest are a whiny bunch of peaceniks. So serve them right.

Though the British security services deserve huge kudos for cracking the plot.

Sky news is reporting the arrested are all "British Muslims". They are still looking for 2 of them; there's supposed to be a news conference in 20 minutes.

:: Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.

[snip]

"We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only,"

Oh, hell no....I hope it spreads to all airports and airlines and becomes permanent. The savings in loading and unloading times alone will be astounding. A minimum of 1/2 hour at either end of a flight, more for jumbo jets.

Next, ban booze sales on flights. I can't smoke, you can't drink. To F'ing bad :-)

Don't suppose I'm surprising anyone by these opinions...from my perspective, even a dark cloud can have a silver lining.

According to what I heard this morning (and no mention whatsoever of names or... anything), they're also not allowing any liquids or gels--no water, no hand cream, no toothpaste.

Not sure how I would handle a 12-hour flight (TO-TA) without water, hand-cream, moisturizing nose spray, and toothpaste. I'm dehydrating just thinking about it.

#22 packen at 5:08 am on Aug 10, 2006

I'm sure a few people will find the temporary security restrictions annoying, doesn't bother me a bit considering the alternatives.

Instead, I would like to praise the British police for not sleeping on the job and preventing a huge disaster. Had it not been for them in this particular case, we would've all been screaming our heads off in indignation at the lack of security, but when a disaster is prevented, oh well, now we can bitch about inconveniences.

My hat off to the British police. Job well done, guys.

#23 Siddhartha Vicious at 5:09 am on Aug 10, 2006

Let's see.

Ahmadinejad says August 22nd.

British PM Blair says they moved on this plot because they had word it was going to be implemented "prior to the end of the month."

Possible terrorist threat via untraceable cell-phones and missing Muslim "students."

Is it possible we are seeing a level of co-ordination beyond any we have seen before among the terrorist groups?

After all, Shia may hate Sunni and vice versa, but they all hate us far more.

Vaguely OT, but not that OT- Bill Bennett had former radical David Horowitz on, talking about his new book "The Shadow Party", basically how George Soros, who doesn't believe there is a global threat from Islam but that the US instead is the greatest danger to the world, and fellow travellers now control the Democrat Party.

Campaign finance reform, per Horowitz, really accelerated the slide of the Dems to the far left. In the past, labor unions, left leaning but generally pro-American, could direct large amounts of money straight to the party. Now, however, to help the Democrats, they must donate to the 527 organizations, like MoveOn, many of which the billionaire Soros helped establish. And these groups generally have a strong anti-American agenda. This has accelerated the movement to purge the last of the patriotic Democrats, like pro-abortion, pro-tax, pro-welfare uber-liberal Joe Lieberman from the party.

Horowitz pointed out, thanks to the glories of the welfare state, the Democrats have almost a built in 40% support base, so even a CodePink/MoveOn run party is still a threat to win elections.

Scary stuff.

That was my first thought, too. And wouldn't his panties be all bunched if his grand plot were foiled! It would be thong city for him!

Ari- I know you weren't joking in your post about banning drinks and stuff, but it has me giggling anyway. And it's TRUE! But if you say that, they'll reply, "My mini bottle of scotch does not infringe upon others like secondhand smoke!"

I beg to differ, especially as in regards to the lady who sat across from me flying out of McCarren in Vegas. PEEE-YEEEWW! And she kept belching wine burps! Then she puked! She was also very loud and obnoxious, but then, she did get on the plane carrying a huge McDonald's cup full of wine.

And I am so not exaggerating.

#28 bigel at 5:23 am on Aug 10, 2006

I would say that the terrorists have succeeded even if they're caught, because security restrictions will now drive even more people away from flying, and bankrupt many air carriers that were already shaky.

Of course, in 12 days, airlines won't have anywhere to go, anyway.

Utter shite! I'm so sick of the "they win even if they lose" line of thought. No, they fucking LOST! And it needs to be broadcasted from the heights!

We should be handing out candy in the streets! We should be dancing in Times Square! We should be starting a website called "yousuckyoumiserableonenotewonders.com" and posting pictures of people sticking their tongues out and waggling their fingers from their ears.

Also, we should have pictures of large women shaking their butts with the caption, "Can't Touch This."

and if they do slip something under security, we need to visit it back upon them times 10 and then broadcast THOSE pictures along with pictures of us giving the "thumbs up". Enough already! Stop being such a whiny vicitim! They feed off it like karmic vampires and you're only empowering the enemy.

Brightly Colored, Large Font Post planned for today or tomorrow during lunch is cancelled

The healthy looking tropical wave I thought might develop 3 days ago, and because of 'beta', move 2 to 3º right of the mean steering and thus pass North of the Greater Antilles, to be turned up into the Carolinas by the East Coast low, has not developed. There is an area of thunderstorms flaring up near the center, but the Eastern Caribbean, with fast low level flow due to the early-mid summer South American heat low, and the affects of dry air downsloping off the near 3 km mountains of Hispañola, means this isn't a candidate to develop before Saturday and Sunday, which means not only has it missed its connection to North Carolina and points North, even if it develops it would have a tough time coming far enough North to even threaten Texas.

We are still almost 5 weeks to the peak of the Atlantic tropical cyclone season, IIRC 2004 didn't have a hurricane until about this time in August, and turned out to be a 4 hit season for Florida, so let not your hearts be troubled.

This is enough to spell the end of civil aviation as we know it:

Telegraph experts: Liquid Bombs

Coupled with the UK poll results of mohammedan attitudes, I reckon we're necessarily in for a wholesale restructuring of the civil liberties regime that has been established since the war. Of course, a few more airliners will likely have to be brought down before the West reaches that tippping point.

#36 Trillian at 6:24 am on Aug 10, 2006

Derb has been saying for a while how we'll have to go back to boats and trains. Don't see why those would be safer, myself - it's no harder to blow up a train or a liner than an airplane.

But the important thing to remember is, it has nothing to do with Islam, which is a Religion of Peace, and yet simultaneously is because of Jewish and Zionist persecution of innocent Muslims in their olive groves, coupled with American complicity in Zionist abuses.

No big deal. I flew to Hong Kong and Singapore right in the middle of Bojinka. I remember seeing the waiting area for a flight that was going from Hong Kong to San Francisco (this was on May 31 1995), filled with the passengers from that flight un-packing and re-packing all of their luggage.

I was flying on to Singapore, we received less scrutiny than they did, but still much more than I had experienced before. At the time, I had a bottle of Hibiclens antiseptic soap. It was a brilliant red and that raised some eyebrows.

The Indian food isn't bland and lifeless- didn't want to convey the wrong impression. Plus, with any luck, there would be slow inter-breeding, which would help out that problem the English have with pasty-white people, especially if the global climate is warming, and the British Isles would be getting more insolation.

Repeat from Hippo -- didn't see the main bloggie post -- sorry.

Flew in last night from SoCal on the Jet Blue red-eye into JFK. We left at midnight ZDT or 3:00 a.m. FDT. We were probably the last flight out before the heightened security -- so I still have my shampoo in my carry-on bag. The flight was uneventful except that JFK had slowed to a crawl. We spent an hour waiting on the tarmac to get into a gate. The security lines stretched all of the way through the terminal and out to the front door as the TAS guys went through every carry-on bag throwing out all liquids or gels. People were weary but putting-up-wtih-it. Don't fly today or tomorrow if you can at all avoid it.

While I watched the newschannels from the tarmac, somebody noted that Jetblue was being sued by a Pakistani man who had been turned down for a job as a pilot because of the "security risk." It made me feel a tad bit kinder towards the airline in whose jammed and tardy hull I was tarrying.

That is tied with this one, exactly. The arrests and the breakthrough in the current case, are a direct result of the arrest and questioning of the man they arrested in that one. Apparently he gave information after his arrest that indicated the plot was a lot closer than the police had thought. I heard that the three women (the man's mother and two sisters) were also arrested, your article says they were freed.

Anyway, just something to keep in mind for anyone who scoffs about the "no-fly" lists and the inconvenience they cause.

And what are liquid explosives, how dangerous are they, does anyone have information about them?

zorky, I posted it in Franks thread on liquid explosives -

Science Takes on the Mother of Satan

First discovered in 1980 in Hebron, TATP is made by mixing hydrogen peroxide, which can be bought in disinfectant form at the neighborhood farmacy, and acetone, commonly found in paint thinners. The compound is helped along by an acid catalyst. “The liquid from your car battery or even lemon juice will do the trick,” notes Keinan. The easy recipe is not lost on the bomb makers: In just one raid in 1998, Palestinian Authority security personnel uncovered 800 kilograms of TATP in a Nablus garage.

However, Tal Hanan, security expert and C.E.O. of Demoman International Ltd., notes that TATP is hardly military grade. An unlucky tap or nearby cigarette can set it off, leading to fatal “work accidents” among terrorists and explosive ordinance disposal officers alike. Outside of Israel and the territories, the peroxide-based explosive is used — if at all — only as a detonator, and not the main charge, like in the hollowed out heel of “shoe bomber” Richard Reid.

Thanks for the info in #64.

Rather because of Hashem's love for you and because he keeps the oath that He made to your forefathers .." (Deuteronomy 7:7-8)

oops, I posted that in the wrong thread..

Nail polish remover has acetone in it, and it might not be unusual for a woman to carry hydrogen peroxide in a small bottle in with her other personal items.

That's scary, how easy it is to make this and how hard it is to detect. The newscaster called Al Qaida a superpower because with one move they can paralyse the world. They were planning to hit New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.

I would say that it is pretty easy to make. Main drawback that I see would be the stability of the explosive.

Just remember this: on the no liquid thing- when we were in China we had to drink any liquid we wanted to carry on before we passed security on every flight except the one from Hong Kong to Newark. In Beijing- they made us give the water to the kids. They wouldn't let us drink it, it had to be the kids.

What do urologists do when they're flying in China?

#74 Aridog at 10:54 am on Aug 10, 2006

A better idea...try the rules where I once lived...you go to the gate to board and the guard tells you you cannot take this or that. You have two choices, throw this or that away on the spot, or, get beaten to the ground in bloody pulp by a couple brass tipped oak batons for arguing.

Surprising how little "debate" there was boarding planes in those days.

#75 Frank IBC at 10:55 am on Aug 10, 2006

Although you'd have to inspect every bottle by hand, acetone has a pretty powerful smell so it would be easy to find.

#76 zorkmidden at 10:59 am on Aug 10, 2006

I think a lot of the stuff that most people carry when they travel is unnecessary. How much jewelry do you need when on vacation? And you can buy cosmetics, soaps, shampoo, etc. at your destination, so you spend a few more dollars, so what? I hate traveling with a lot of stuff and I don't believe in dragging the contents of my whole closet wherever I go.

#77 skoi at 11:12 am on Aug 10, 2006

Good point zorkie- I totally overpack because you never know what you might need, but when you travel with little kids- it's like a friggin baggage train. I'm glad I'm taking Amtrak on vacation this year.

#78 zorkmidden at 11:14 am on Aug 10, 2006

skoi, my mom is totally the opposite of me. One mama, three suitcases.

Security dramatically tighter in UK's airports: can't bring any on-board luggage

This is offensive to the luggage-carrying community. The large majority of luggage carriers are peaceful people. This discrimination is an example of the bigotry and suitcaseophobia of racist light-traveler supremecists. Luggage carriers who act contrary to the norms of traditional behavior for airlines are merely responding to provocations. We need to ask ourselves why luggage-carriers hate us.

zorkie: I take my shampoo because I use stuff that isn't available everywhere. And, yes, I HAVE to use it. WHy? Because it's Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil and it is a lice preventative and I have a lice phobia..

Other than that, I buy everything there. But I pack lots of clothes. I like clothes. I like wearing lots of clothes. I like changing a lot.

Clothes are nice. So are shoes.

#81 Frank IBC at 12:38 pm on Aug 10, 2006

LOL, Meg!

They can have my moisturizer when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

/diva

When I travel abroad, I usually carry a small bottle of liquid handsoap with me. Maybe I'll have to get a mini soapdish instead.

Zorkie -

Do hotels in Greece consistently have towels?

Chris Mankey, you snivelling little princess wannabe. Who's crashing airplanes into buildings and waging terrorism? Is it Christians, Prissy Chrissy? Nope. Is it Jewish people, Mankey? no. Is it Agnostics? Forget it. It's radical MUSLIMS, Chrissie. And you can bet your ignorant, arrogant liberal fat ass that CAIR is working overtime to whine about these events. Sorry that reality hurts you so much.

In the meantime, FUCK YOU.

I think you missed Chris Mankey's point. I think the FU was aimed at CAIR.

But its ok, the thread had been dead a week, and he/she will probably never see your response.

This is offensive to the luggage-carrying community. The large majority of luggage carriers are peaceful obnoxious narcissitic people...

..........who presume that over head rack was put there for their 4,675 pounds of crap they muscle on to the plane...then rub young head with as they put it up above you, 98 rows from their seats.

Did I say that?...;-0
