Yes, it is incredible. Olmert and the world are waiting for a band of corrupted, penniless, genocidal murderers to recognize the world's 4th largest military power, whose social, political and moral achievements dwarf not only her neighbours but most of the world.

How do Jews end up in this situation?

To repost my ealier comment, had not Ben Gurion's lust for power been greater than his Ahavath Yisrael (if any) -- had he accepted Begin's contribution, instead of making the beach sand red with Jewish blood -- all of Eretz Yisrael could have have been redeemed during the War of Independence, and today's situation would not have existed in such dire form.

The crime of being successful. It's so tres chic to be a victim now, and Israel has done the unthinkable... refused to be victims.

Rather than recognizing the magnitude of strength, brains and dedication it took to create something great out of nothing, the world opinion figures that Israel must have done something sneaky and bad in order to get there.

After all, if it were so "easy" to be successful, why are the poor felahin still living hand to mouth in dirt?

Solus,

So much blame to go around.

In temporal order:

The British for fucking up the Palestine Mandate, and the USA for going along with it, Israel's past leadership, for various strategic mistakes, including the one you mentioned, but also, subsequently, ensuring the survival of the illegitimate hashemite regime in eastern palestine. Present leadership for demonstrating weakenss and supplication in dealing with the genocidal wepaon that is the 'palestinain nationality', and for acquiescing to America's never changing demands of 'land for peace'.

The latter is perhaps the most pernicious, for Israel has no realistic way to counter the American demands for continous concessions, which are to be dribbled out to the arabs as consolation prizes while american goals elsewhere in the mid east are identified, pursued, and attained.

Israel's past leadership, for various strategic mistakes, including the one you mentioned, but also, subsequently, ensuring the survival of the illegitimate hashemite regime in eastern palestine.

One could reasonably argue that during the War of Independence, survival, not territorial integrity -- even though, for Israel, they are all but identical -- was the prime objective. However, Israel's leadership has kept missing opportunity after opportunity (the latest of which is Elon plan -- or is it DOA?) to rectify that initial setback.
