You seem to think it's a complete and total coincidence that a political party is advocating both sexual abuse of children and legalization of all drugs. Here in MA it's the case. I'm sure on the books it's legit, but you don't have a lot of options as far as where to buy your booze wholesale. It also extends to the state and local gov't as far as control of liquor licenses both for "package stores" and bars.

I always thought that the reason that Virginia limited liquor sales to state-owned-and-managed ABC stores was so that liquor retailers would not engage in marketing and to also make the purchase of liquor as expensive, difficult, and unappealing as possible. This is why there used to be a dozen liquor stores on the D.C. side of the Key Bridge.

I've never priced liquor stores in MD, but I do know that at present, hard spirits are cheaper in VA than in DC.

(DC also has somewhat stricter "blue laws" than VA. You can buy wines at Virginia grocery stores, but in DC you have to go to a liquor store for your Merlot or Chardonnay -- assuming it's not a Sunday, when DC liquor stores are closed.)

Maryland's liquor laws vary incredibly from county to county.

Montgomery County has the only county-owned liquor monopoly in the country. It has the same rule that throbert mentions, prohibiting stand-alone bars. Liquor stores close at 9 or 10, and all day sundays. Private beer-and-wine stores may stay open until midnight, and on Sunday. Bars may remain open until 1 on weekdays, 2 on weekends.

Baltimore City allows liquor sales on Sunday, but only in drug stores. Liquor stores close at 9. Same bar hours as Montgomery. But liquor stores which are directly connected to bars ("package stores") may remain open as long as the bar is legally open.

Prince Georges County has "package stores", but recently changed the law to require them to close at midnight, the same as all other liquor stores.

St. Mary's County (southern Maryland) has no restrictions on the sale of liquor on Sunday.

Several counties, including Montgomery, allow only one or two liquor licenses per business - so 7-11's, Safeways, Giants, gas stations, etc. do not sell alcohol.

DC's closing hours are more lenient - 2 on weekdays and 3 on weekends.

One thing that continues to surprise me about New York City is that stores close earlier on Saturdays than they do around here.
