Mayday
Interesting to note that the original issue of preventing people from coming to the U.S. illegally has now become an issue of "immigrant rights". What "rights" are immigrants lacking? None. Legal immigrants to the U.S. have the same rights and responsibilities as every American citizen. But it's easier to stir passions and blur legal distinctions by calling illegal aliens "immigrants" and today, thousands of people plan to hold rallies, not go to work, not buy American products in an effort to show America how much they matter.

I don't know how much I matter to America, I had never thought about it before. I know I matter to the people who love me and I never cared if I mattered to strangers so the issue had never come up. But America has always mattered to me, and that is something that I think about everyday. My family has wanted me to move back to Greece for a long time, according to them, there's no reason for me to be here any longer. But in reality, there are a million and one reasons for me to be here. Every day I spend in America I learn something new, I better myself in some small way, I create something or I contribute to something. I'm looking at this game I'm creating and I'm fully aware that if I was in Greece I probably wouldn't have the opportunity to be doing this, something that I've wanted to do for five years now.

All I can say is America has given a lot to me and I don't understand what purpose there is in punishing her for a day. So today, in support of immigrant rights, I'll have a regular workday, work on bloggie, work on C:FH and think once again how lucky I am to have the opportunity to be accomplishing all this.

The use of the word "immigrants" without the "illegal" prefix has been bugging me, too.

And can anybody show me where, in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence or any of our founding documents it states that the United States of America is obligated to make anybody who wants to come here a citizen, and to bail out corrupt, collapsing nations who can't even feed their own people, and expect us to take up the slack for them---because that's exactly what we're being asked to do here!

P.S. Zorkie, America needs ya! Please stay with us!

Moi aussi (or however you spell "too" in french. If I can't spell in English, I can't be expected to spell in the language of the Godforsaken, can I?).

Hubby said that he's celebrating, as a legal immigrant with citizenship, by working extra hard today. Like zorkie.

Sears was bought by K-Mart in 2004, but the Sears name was retained. I can't find any information on Mexican ownership.

Not much of a punishment, really. In fact, let them also forgo the welfare checks, the medical assistance, the public school benefits and whatever else they're leeching off us.

My mistake. I think that it is the Mexican Sears stores that are owned by a Mexican company.

As the grandchild of immigrants I decided to take the day off in solidarity with my immigrant bretheren.

But considering I really dont give a flying fig about these silly protests, I figured I'd split the difference and just be late for work instead. ;-)

America is fortunate to have you here, zorkie : )

Well, I haven't tuned in to much news (TV, radio or net) in a few days, so I don't really know what's going on in the area today. There's probably something going on in NYC, but I'm not going to bother checking for more info.

FWIW, I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Here's a fine example of that new immigrant work ethic, courtesy of my local news...

Jose Cruz, 23, from El Salvador, said he took off the day from his construction job to attend the rally.

“If I lose my job, it’s worth it,” said Cruz, who has a temporary work permit that is granted to many Central Americans. “It’s worth losing several jobs to get my papers.”

So, it's okay once again to use the word "Gringo" in a derogatory manner REPEATEDLY and on the news... but what would happen if the derogatory word for Latinos was used?

Let me just say that I DON'T use that word... but I want the same damn consideration for fuck's sake.

If anything, doesnt this whole protest nonsense put the exact opposite message across? After all, if we didnt have latino laborers in this country we wouldnt have to worry about them holding our economy hostage to their polticial agendas!

zorkz, it's immigrants like you that make America great.

Today was very nice in the south bay area of Los Angeles county. I took down the trash without having to walk past the loitering, staring day laborers this morning. That NEVER happens.

The tire/rim shop and auto body shop below my apartment were closed, so no bumping of the gansta rap or mariachi. Not that I dislike mariachi, I just don't like being forced to hear it all the time.

The street traffic flowed like a healthy cardiovascular system.

My normal 1 hour commute was instead about 25 minutes.

The only sad thing, I saw a latin man leaning on his gardening truck this morning crying. I don't know why he was crying, but I felt bad for him.

As others have said ^^^, I am glad you are here, you are one of the most fair-minded and kindest people I know. It makes me feel proud of the US that you would want to stay here.

Our local NBC also captioned their news of this protest as an "Immigrant Rights" rally.

I think, along with the revised anthem, that it will backfire.

The boycott in NYC had small impact from what I could see. There was virtually zero participation from the huge immigrant populations which were not Hispanic. At the 82nd street el stop on the 7 train, I looked up and down Roosevelt Avenue. Maybe 25% of businesses were closed. This street is the Hispanic main street. Broadway in Queens had 0% closed -- it is the Chinese main street. I had meetings on Wall Street, the upper west side and midtown east side today. The traffic seemed normal. There were Hispanic workers on the job at every eatery I visited.

There was a demonstration of 50 moonbats in orange jumpsuits chanting to shut down Guantanamo outside of one building where I had a meeting and which also housed the U.S. mission to the U.N. My guess is that they got little press for their theatrics.

Levi,

The obvious difference in New York is that the vast majority of Hispanics are either Puerto Rican (and thus citizens already) or Dominicans (a higher percentage of whom are here legally compared to Mexicans).

Well, I don't agree. I live near 37th Ave, in Jackson Heights. In this neighborhood, being a Puerto Rican would put you in the minority, just like the Jewish, German, and Irish residents of this neighborhood now are. This neighborhood is composed of legal and illegal immigrants from Columbia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Nicaragua, and other points South, as well as Mexico. (You should see the "Immigrant Parades" for each country that are held each weekend in the summer. One I remember had tons of Ecuadoran flags, Ecuadoran pride, but no pride in America, much less American flags. What has Ecuador done for the world that one can take such pride in that country while residing, legally or illegaly, in another, far greater, country?)

2 cm, everything still looks good. Labor could be anytime in next couple of weeks, and now that we're past 37 weeks, certain unpleasant restrictions have been lifted, because the baby would be ok if shaken loose now.

Lasix is a diuretic. It's commonly used to treat high blood pressure. It's used on horses to reduce their weight so that they can stay within their weight categories.
