It is reasonably clear by the jobsites shut down from just the few raids that there would be major economic dislocation caused by taking action like deporting all illegal aliens. The President's course of creating a path towards either guest worker status or citizenship is correct. If the border were also secured, I would be happy.

The trouble of course, is, that just as the last amnesty spurred even more illegal immigration, a new one will almost certainly do the same.

I feel sympathy for those people who are desperate to escape the miserable conditions in Mexico and elsewhere. What I do not have sympathy for are those businesses that have made it a practice to hire illegals, instead of citizens, or legal immigrants, simply to save on costs. I doubt very much that those savings are passed on to consumers.

I know that this country was built by immigrants, but I also know that with every job given to an illegal at a lower rate than would be paid to a citizen, or a legal immigrant, that the overall job market for lower-skilled Americans is reduced.

I do not remember who originally said it, but we are, literally importing poverty, importing third-world conditions, and slowly becoming a nation with a peasant class. This is a recipe for disaster, as those peasants realize they are not living the American dream, and begin to be fodder for the absurdist "Aztlan" type movements.

Americans cannot all get college educations, many are uninterested, and many are simply not competent. The country needs blue-collar folks to do the necessary physical jobs. But they need to be blue-collar Americans, not illegals.

We can put up with some short-term disruptions in economic dislocation now, or look forward to a very long-term slide in the economic condition of every American who is not a prefessional.

That and worse. Numbers are of the essence: dozens of millions of unassimilated Mexicans in this country will cause it to become more like Mexico. It really is as simple as that.

Geez, I didn't realize how poorly constructed and typo-laden that sentence was until I saw it in your quote, Solus.

That's what I get for getting up before 5 am and staying up well past 10 pm.

Anyway, good night, everyone. Hope you all sleep well and dream beautifully.

Question: Do stringent rules and regulations [which aren't working anyway] governing migrants, illegal and otherwise, not contribute to the number who stay here? If guest worker programs were enacted, would more feel free to return to their homeland, at lest periodically, rather than transplant their old culture here?

I think I have heard this idea broached clearly once in the MSM, followed by deafening silence.

I don't know the answer, but discussion of it surely can't hurt.

It didn't happen that way the last time, or the time before that, or the ...

There should be no discussion of any more "guest worker programs" or "amnesty" until the border is secured.

I went for a long rollerblade through many immigrant communities in Queens 7ish this a.m. The school buses were full. The garbage collectors were working hard. All stores ordinarily open at this hour seemed open. Many are owned by immigrants. There seems to be zero joinder of the boycott by the Indian, Irish, or Chinese communities. I saw few Hispanics compared to an ordinary working day, but these seemed to be going to school, shopping, or work. There were a couple of parked taxis which is not ordinary for 7:00 a.m.

They march under the banners that say No Visas Temporales.

The demands of 100% amnesty are practically untenable. No reponsible legislator or policy-maker would ever suggest it. Which is why the Dem are using the illegals as proxies.
