China developing its first aircraft carrier battle group

Vietnam building new deep-water military port

The Chinese Ministry of Defense is showing off satellite photos of a mock invasion of Taiwan. At the same time, it's showing off its in-the-making aircraft carrier battle group as China prepares for war with the United States over Taiwan. Or does anyone really think China needs an aircraft carrier battle group to bomb a tiny island separated from it by only 100 miles? Combined with China's development of the capability to kill US aircraft carrier battle groups, and you have a very worrisome picture.

At the same time as all this, Communist Vietnam has announced plans to build a major deep-water military harbor in the North-East, in Haiphong. I wonder whose ships will be docking there; ours, or China's? It's a location of major strategic importance in any conflict, as the map I made, below, shows. Vietnam has very good reason to use this port as part of a strategy to develop a maritime capability to match China's in the ongoing Spratly Islands dispute, but that's small potatoes compared to our interest in berthing a fleet there capable of striking China's major wealthy cities, and deterring China from invading Taiwan, and China's interest in denying us that capability. Given recent Bush administration overtures to the Vietnamese, it's quite likely we'll end up with some kind of fleet berthed in Haiphong. It also looks like we're trying to take over the Gwadar deep-water port that China is building in Pakistan for our own use. Wheels within wheels...

Frank, I think we should report him to the blogowner for breaking bloggie rules.

On Topic, ev, do you think Communist Vietnam would side with America in a battle against China, and not the other way round?

It's scary really how this other major war is developing, and no one is paying it any attention. The world's attention seems focused on the Middle East for now.

annie, it looks exactly like that's what's shaping up..

It's hard to say who Vietnam would side with.

China invaded Vietnam in early 1979, and ended up losing as many troops in 6(?) weeks, as the US did in the entire 20-year war.

It will be Cold War II

Wow, I didn't know that. I know almost nothing about Vietnam, just the bare bones. It was just background to my teenage years and because I was in England and then in Israel it didn't directly affect me. Israel kept me busy enough...

I ought to read up more about the subject.

That's better than hot war though, don't you think? And do either side have nukes or other WMD which could complicate matters? And would North Korea see an opportunity and jump in to complicate things even further?

#10 Dances With Typos at 10:30 am on Jan 22, 2006

Both sides have nukes. Both sides almost certainly have the capability to develop other WMDs, if they do not already possess them.

I don't think this war will remain cold for long.

#11 evariste at 10:31 am on Jan 22, 2006

If only Taiwan had nukes, China's saber-rattling wouldn't be an issue. If any country deserves nuclear weapons for self-defense, Taiwan does.

#12 evariste at 10:33 am on Jan 22, 2006

I didn't bother marking Taiwan itself because it's already marked on the map, although in rather small type.

annie, it looks exactly like that's what's shaping up..

The release of remains of US servicemen a month or so back is a sign of the thaw. Obviously the Vietnamese knew exactly where those remains were, all this time, but the fact that they're releasing them now speaks volumes.

Vietnam is also a competitor against China for American dollars. Take a look at the label of your clothes, dont be surprised if you see 'Made in Vietnam' instead of 'Made in China'. I was!

Theres also a lot of common sense in it.
Who would be the harsher master? China or us?

Mr Evariste! Why do you not acknowledge Taiwans right to exist??
Did you buy this map from Kofi Annan? ;-)

#15 evariste at 10:45 am on Jan 22, 2006

annie, I do think Vietnam is more likely to side with us than with China...for now, and thanks in large part to the Bush administration's intense courting of them. We'll see what develops.

Thats why it will remain Cold. Forget the UN, WMD are the best peacekeepers in the World.

The Chinese are now interested in Capitalism so they aren't as ideologically opposed to US as the USSR was. They also have common interests such as fighting an Islamic insurgency.

#18 texanista at 10:56 am on Jan 22, 2006

I doubt China would go to war against the greatest market they have for their products...

Absolutely and as with North Korea - who knows King Jong Il is certifiable loon. They might declare War on both sides ( like they did a few years ago when they threaten to declare war on the UN), but I'm guessing he would side with China.

It could easily escalate into another branch of a World War if the Mideast explodes.

Yikes, interesting times are upon us.

Moscow siding with Hanoi could have been a factor in that.

He turned up in Beijing. An 'unofficial visit' with President Hu, immediately after which North Korea and American diplomats met in Beijing, with Chinese attending the meeting.
