Mexico: Do as I say, not as I do
The sheer, unmitigated gall of Mexico's effrontery in demanding migrants' (read lawbreakers') "rights" be respected by the United States has never been as ironic as it is today, as Mexico admits to horrible mistreatment of illegal immigrants to Mexico.
MEXICO CITY - Mexico's federal Human Rights Commission acknowledged on Wednesday that the country uses some of the same methods in dealing with illegal migrants that it has criticized the United States for employing.

The admission comes as Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez called on Latin American countries to unite against a U.S. House of Representatives bill to toughen border enforcement.

The bill, which passed on Friday with a 239-182 vote, would make illegal entry a felony, and enlist military and local police to help stop illegal entrants.

But officials of Mexico's federal Human Rights Commission acknowledged that Mexico already employs both tactics in its own territory.

"As a matter of fact, (Mexico's) population law does include prison terms for illegally entering the country ... and this is something that has been the subject of constant complaints," said Mauricio Farah, a national inspector for the rights commission.

Jose Luis Soberanes, president of the rights commission, said that Mexico also uses many government agencies, such as the police and the military, to detain undocumented migrants, even though Mexican law technically doesn't allow that.

"One of the saddest national failings on immigration issues," Soberanes told a news conference, "is the contradiction in demanding that the North (the United States) respect migrants' rights, which we are not capable of guaranteeing in the South," along Mexico's border with Guatemala.

Michel Sabbah is a born comedian: Latin Patriarch blames Bush for Hamas popularity
Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah blamed US President George Bush's aggressive foreign policy and "Israeli violence" for Hamas's rise in popularity during an annual Christmas message given Wednesday.

"Hamas is getting more popular thanks to Bush," said Sabbah in response to a reporter's question. Sabbah said that US and Israeli attempts to interfere in Palestinian affairs, radicalize the Palestinian street and boosts support for Hamas. "Abu Mazen succeeds in keeping things under control and convincing Hamas to stop the violence. But then Israeli violence ruins everything."
Abu Mazen "succeeds in convincing Hamas to stop the violence"? LMAO!! Sorry about that, resume reading.
Palestinian sources estimated that Sabbah's comments, which imply Hamas exploits Palestinian despair and is not popular in its own right, would offend Hamas.
LMAO again! Oh man, you can't make this stuff up...
Sabbah, the highest-ranking Catholic clergyman for issues affecting the local congregation of approximately 30,000, also denied that Muslim violence against Christians in the Holy Land was a real problem.

"I think the constant talk about this subject is an obsession," said Sabbah. "There is no persecution."

Sabbah said relations are complicated. "There are cases in which Christians join Muslims to persecute other Christians."

Asked to explain the massive exodus of Christians of all denominations out of the Holy Land in past decades, Sabbah said, "lots of people are leaving, Jews are leaving, Muslims are leaving, Christians are leaving too. But we are such a small community it is more noticed."

Sabbah said Christians would continue to leave Bethlehem "as long as the city remains a prison".
Do you think he's referring to little incidents like this? Nah...

Scheuer Skewers McCain
Michael Scheuer may be a frequently-deranged critic of the Bush administration, but when he's right, he's right.
If we die as a nation, Lincoln once said, it will be an act of national suicide. And so it seems we are. The media, led by The Washington Post, and Congress, led by Arizona Sen. John McCain, are moving America to disaster's brink by intentionally destroying its most successful counterterrorism tool: the CIA's rendition program.

Spurred by The Post's traditional lust for compromising national security for no reason save selling copy, and abetted by Mr. McCain's ignorant grandstanding and shameless exploitation of his POW record to sate his presidential lust, the CIA program that best defends America will soon be laid to rest. Around the grave The Post, Mr. McCain and the pacifist Democrats and their European idols will rejoice over burying what they have misidentified as "torture operations." Instead, they will have destroyed America's main offensive weapon against al Qaeda.

This disaster began nearly a year ago. First, the intrepid Post reporters revealed the tail number of an aircraft purportedly used by CIA to move captured militants. A piece of information of no news value, but titillating to the world's media and incentive to America's European enemies to destroy the cover of a covert-action capability that took years to perfect. How, thanks to The Post, the CIA's clandestine counterterrorism cooperation with several allies has been exposed or reported incorrectly, time will tell -- thereby severely diminishing the chance of further such cooperation. Unavoidably, this will weaken America against al Qaeda and result in more dead Americans. For The Post, thousands of American corpses are apparently not too much of a price to pay for selling papers and perhaps bagging a Pulitzer.

What to make of Mr. McCain? His behavior raises the question of whatever became of U.S. veterans who never sought to make political or economic hay from their wartime records. Former Sen. George McGovern and the actor Jimmy Stewart flew, respectively, 35 and 25 combat missions over Nazi Germany. They and tens of thousands of other World War II veterans chose not to draw attention to their own bravery and combat records. In Mr. McCain, we have a man who has been dining out on his POW experience for a quarter-century, and is now using it to grandstand on the so-called "torture" issue to advance his campaign for the presidency. This is not to question the Arizona senator's personal bravery and patriotism -- there is no question on these points -- but merely to reflect on his tawdry, self-serving behavior in comparison to men like Mr. McGovern, Mr. Stewart, and their contemporaries. The senator's "no-torture campaign" reveals him for what he is: A little man, with mediocre intelligence, a taste for bullying and an appalling temper who thinks the presidency is his birthright.

Mr. McCain's attack on "CIA torture" will have the same impact as The Post's: It will kill Americans. Neither Mr. McCain nor The Post have mentioned that the CIA conducts no torture, and that its interrogation methods have been approved, reviewed and reapproved by batteries of U.S. government lawyers. Also unmentioned is that CIA's rendition program is today the main U.S. counterterrorism tool because neither the Clinton or Bush administrations nor the Congress have taken the Islamist threat seriously.

Terrified of the bad PR attendant to dead U.S. soldiers and civilian casualties, both administrations and Congress have made it their policy to "arrest and try terrorists one man at a time." Content to ignore that America's enemy is a worldwide Islamic insurgency and not Dutch Shultz's gang, these entities have demanded that the CIA's rendition program serve as the first line of America's defense in capturing and interrogating all al Qaeda leaders.

That task, of course, is impossible. The rendition program was meant to complement other national counterterrorist operations, not be the national counter-terrorist program, which is the status it holds today. While the FBI cannot buy a computer system that works, the Congress refuses to secure U.S. borders or Russia's nuclear arsenal, and our presidents send U.S. soldiers and Marines overseas with inappropriate equipment and rules of engagement that choke U.S. military power, The Post and Mr. McCain are intent on destroying the one offensive U.S. program that saves American lives. Why? To increase revenue, to edge toward the presidency, and to placate two-faced European and U.S. human-rights activists. Yes, this includes you, Sens. Richard Durbin, Patrick Leahy and Charles Schumer, who use any stick to beat America, but have never uttered a word about going after Putin, Yeltsin and Gorbachev as the legatees of a system that deliberately murdered 40 million people.

History is replete with episodes of rats leaving a sinking ship. Thanks to The Post and Mr. McCain, we may now be watching the rats sink the ship.

Russia helping Iran build tunnels
Gee, thanks again, Russia! Now that's a country that just never stops helping the world become a better place.
LONDON -- An Iranian exile group claimed Tuesday that Tehran has secretly built a network of tunnels and underground facilities with the help of two Russian scientists in an effort to conceal parts of its atomic and missile programs.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran said the facilities concealed nuclear equipment, research workshops, and nuclear and missile command-and-control centers. It said the information was based on sources within the Iranian establishment, but did not identify them.

"The Iranian Resistance has now received information about 14 locations where these tunnels and underground facilities have been built near Tehran, Isfahan, Qom and some other cities," said Hossein Abedini, a member of the group's foreign affairs committee.

Speaking to reporters in a conference room in Parliament, Abedini said Iran had used front companies and technology imported from other countries for the tunnel construction project.

He also claimed the Iranian Tunneling Association -- which he said was founded in 1998 by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's current president -- "has played a vital role to cover up the regime's nuclear- and missile-related tunnel construction project."

He said two Russian scientists, whom he identified as "Andrei Kridiko" and "Lakht," had "cooperated with the Iranian regime in building these secure facilities." He did not provide any other information about the scientists.

Russia is helping Iran build a nuclear reactor in Bushehr, a project that Tehran says is intended strictly for electricity generation. The United States, however, accuses Tehran of using the project as part of an effort to build atomic weapons.

Officials in Moscow made no immediate comment about the claim. Russia has denied previous allegations that its citizens were involved in developing a nuclear program in Iran.

Elton and David
Is this moral decline or social advancement? Is this really what our society should worry about? Or is it finally time for our perceptions to change? What role should the church, any church, take in this? A pastoral role of support or a position of condemnation? Is this another nail in the coffin for the traditional family or the strenghtening of that concept by including diverse people that actually want to buy in the marital union?

Elton John tied the knot with long-term partner David

La Pascualita
I wonder if Gabriel Garcia Marquez's tale about Margarito Duarte and his daughter was inspired by this story: Riddle of Mexico's "corpse bride" draws crowds. I just love magical realism.
Peering through the glass at a mannequin's veined hands, sparkling eyes and eerie smile, the small crowd gathered outside a store in northern Mexico tries to settle a macabre riddle beguiling many.

Is the tall, slender bridal figure in the window a richly detailed shop's dummy or, as a local legend says, the decades-old embalmed corpse of the former store owner's daughter?.

The haunting figure known as 'La Pascualita,' or 'Little Pascuala' first appeared 75 years ago in the window of the bridal gown store in the city of Chihuahua.

Since then, the striking realism of the dummy has spawned supernatural tales and reports of a miracle, and even inspired a foot-stomping accordion ballad played on local radio.

The figure has drawn a stream of people from across the desert state of Chihuahua over the past eight decades, and is now attracting curious visitors from South America, the United States and Europe, the owners of the La Popular store say.

As cars and trucks rumble by the shop on a busy city street, the entranced visitors smudge their noses up against the store window and try to decide for themselves if it's a corpse.

"She looks good for all the years that she's been here," Yolanda Robles, who trekked to the shop out of curiosity from Phoenix, Arizona, said as she studied the rosary-clutching figurine.

"There are just so many details, like her hair and the nails on her hand, that it just has to be true," she added.

Through the years the story has bloomed into a tale with all the rich characteristics of magic realist fiction. It all began on March 25, 1930, when the dummy was first placed in the store front window.

Dressed in a spring-season bridal gown, the figure immediately gripped the attention of passers by with its disquieting, wide-set glass eyes, real hair and blushing skin tones. Pascualita is unique among other shop mannequins in the sleepy backwater state capital.

Rapt locals soon began to notice a striking resemblance to the shop's then owner, Pascuala Esparza. A rumor quickly spread that the figure was not a dummy, but her daughter who, it was said, died from the bite of a Black Widow spider on her wedding day.

"She started to receive abusive phone calls from angry citizens who accused her of embalming her daughter," the store's present owner Mario Gonzalez said in his office above the wood-paneled shop floor.

"She decided to issue a formal denial through a public notary in the city, but by then it was too late. Nobody believed her and the name 'Pascualita' stuck," he added.

The name of the daughter, if Esparza ever had one, became lost in time.

Down the years, the tale has been embellished with claims of supernatural happenings, including visits by a love-sick French magician who is said to bring the dummy magically to life at night, and take her out on the town.

Others say that her gaze follows them around the store, or that she shifts positions at night in the darkened shop window to the surprise of passers by.

Spooked by the tales, several jittery shop workers say they dread being the last to leave the store in the evening, and some of them refuse to change the dummy's outfits.

Indeed, twice a week her outfits are changed, always using the more classic bridal styles that Gonzalez and his staff consider more appropriate and dignified. The changing is done -- perhaps a bit theatrically -- behind curtains put up in the shop window to preserve the dummy's modesty.

"Every time I go near Pascualita my hands break out in a sweat," shopworker Sonia Burciaga said.

"Her hands are very realistic and she even has varicose veins on her legs. I believe she's a real person."

While Pascualita is more of a curio than a religious draw in devoutly Catholic Mexico, a few people have left votive candles outside the shop and even attribute a miracle to her.

"One woman was having a violent argument with her boyfriend close to the store. As she turned to walk away from her lover, he pulled out a pistol and shot her," Gonzalez said.

"As she fell she looked up and saw the figure in the shop window and said, 'Save me Pascualita, save me!' And you know what? She survived," he adds.

Other tributes to the mannequin have included an altar of sugar skulls, flowers and candles left by local school children each year on November 2 -- Mexico's Day of the Dead -- and a ballad by popular Tex-Mex combo 'Los Archies.'

Among those to visit the bride have been popular television figures such as Mario Kreutzberger, better known as 'Don Francisco', whose syndicated show has stirred up interest in the figure throughout Latin America.

As more visitors come to the shop each year, Gonzalez says he is thinking of getting a visitors' book and even opening a small museum to Pascualita.

But asked to settle once and for all whether she is a dummy or a corpse, he just smiles and shakes his head. "Is it true? A lot of people believe it is, but I really couldn't say."

Pederasts & Scoundrels
It's hard to sympathize with Justin, but the child molesters who were his customers are even more culpable than him. The person with the role that's the hardest to understand is his father, however.
The 13-year-old boy sat in his California home, eyes fixed on a computer screen. He had never run with the popular crowd and long ago had turned to the Internet for the friends he craved. But on this day, Justin Berry's fascination with cyberspace would change his life.

Weeks before, Justin had hooked up a Web camera to his computer, hoping to use it to meet other teenagers online. Instead, he heard only from men who chatted with him by instant message as they watched his image on the Internet. To Justin, they seemed just like friends, ready with compliments and always offering gifts.

Now, on an afternoon in 2000, one member of his audience sent a proposal: he would pay Justin $50 to sit bare-chested in front of his Webcam for three minutes. The man explained that Justin could receive the money instantly and helped him open an account on PayPal.com, an online payment system.

"I figured, I took off my shirt at the pool for nothing," he said recently. "So, I was kind of like, what's the difference?"

Justin removed his T-shirt. The men watching him oozed compliments.

So began the secret life of a teenager who was lured into selling images of his body on the Internet over the course of five years. From the seduction that began that day, this soccer-playing honor roll student was drawn into performing in front of the Webcam - undressing, showering, masturbating and even having sex - for an audience of more than 1,500 people who paid him, over the years, hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Justin's dark coming-of-age story is a collateral effect of recent technological advances. Minors, often under the online tutelage of adults, are opening for-pay pornography sites featuring their own images sent onto the Internet by inexpensive Webcams. And they perform from the privacy of home, while parents are nearby, beyond their children's closed bedroom doors.
Sick. What would drive grown men to be so wrapped up in a sick fantasy to pay a young boy for sexual webcam performances? Almost as sick: that Justin is painting himself as the big victim when he was enabling their behavior and profiting richly off of it. I'm not willing to grant Justin his innocence; perhaps it's unkind of me, but I don't see him as an innocent actor. I see him as another link in the chain of the self-justifying, self-perpetuating pedophiliac rot in American society. It seems like he's taking his victimhood and running, graciously absolving himself of all responsibility for what he did. His dad's behavior is even worse.

Everything about this story disgusts me. No one seems innocent in the least.
