White Supremacist Democrats?!
And here I thought Republicans were the devil... the slave-emancipating, self-reliance-preaching devil... Report Calls 1898 N.C. Riot an Insurrection
Violence in 1898 that resulted in the only known forceful overthrow of a city government in U.S. history has historically been called a race riot but actually was an insurrection that white supremacists had planned for months, a state commission concludes.

The violence in Wilmington, which resulted in the deaths of an unknown number of black people, "was part of a statewide effort to put white supremacist Democrats in office and stem the political advances of black citizens," the 1898 Wilmington Riot Commission concludes in a draft report.

Afterward, white supremacists in state office passed laws that disfranchised blacks until the civil rights movement and Voting Rights Act of the 1960s.

"Essentially, it crippled a segment of our population that hasn't recovered in 107 years," said Harper Peterson, a commission member and former mayor of Wilmington. "It's a major event that went unnoticed."

At the time of the violence, black men in North Carolina had been able to vote for some three decades as part of Reconstruction following the Civil War, said Jeffrey Crow, deputy secretary of the state Office of Archives and History, which researched the report.

But within a year of the insurrection, the General Assembly was controlled by Democrats and had passed the first Jim Crow law that ended voting rights to blacks.

The General Assembly established the commission in 2000. Its draft report was opened for public comment last week.

Some commission members have suggested financing historical exhibitions about the riot and its consequences, portraying it in school history texts and developing economic interests in affected areas.

In addition, the state should issue some sort of apology for its inaction, said Irving Joyner, vice chairman of the commission and a law professor at N.C. Central University.

"Because Wilmington rioters were able to murder blacks in daylight and overthrow Republican government without penalty or federal intervention, everyone in the state, regardless of race, knew that the white supremacy campaign was victorious on all fronts," the report says.

The commission must make recommendations to the Legislature by May.

The report documents the deaths of 22 blacks.

"We'll never know how many people died," said LeRae Umfleet, the state archives researcher who has worked with the commission since 2003. "There are not enough tombstones to tell us everyone that was murdered."

The commission is still studying tax records and working to determine the riot's financial impact on the black business community.

It took the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act to restore blacks' voting rights, Jeffrey Crow said. But he noted that Congress argues about the Voting Rights Act every time it comes up for renewal.

"More than a hundred years later, we're still trying to resolve the issues," Crow said. "It's extremely important that people understand history."

Venal Schröder's Big Payoff
At The Brussels Journal, stunning evidence that former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder's political positions were aimed at getting him a lucrative Russian sinecure. He's now making at least one million euros a year as an "advisor" to the state-owned Gazprom. Basically, he's got a Kremlin pension. What the hell use is a former German politician working for a Russian oil company? Why is he worth €1,000,000+ a year to them? He isn't.
France, Germany and Russia. What a lovely place Europe would be without them. Throughout history they have constantly been bullying their neighbours. When the big ones team up, the little nations of continental Europe better beware or they will be gang raped, like Poland in 1939. This explains why it is imperative that Europe be Atlanticist. If it turns continental the three big ones will extort the little ones. The latest proof of this has just been provided in a new German-Russian deal that resembles the pact between Adolf Hitler and Joe Stalin to squeeze Eastern Europe.

Apart from Adolf Hitler, Gerhard Schröder is Germany’s most repulsive chancellor ever. During his seven years in office – which ended last month – the Socialist politician forged Berlin into an alliance with France, where his friend, the French crook Jack Chirac, is in charge, and with Russia, through his friendship with former KGB chief Vladimir Putin. A compulsive America-basher, Schröder did tremendous harm to the Atlantic Alliance. We now know why.
Read the whole sordid thing.

NYC Subway Strike
NYC is shut down today, 12 days before Christmas. Normally NYC does Christmas very well; we are a glittery happy cold place. But the subway carries annually about 3 billion people counting the duplicates. Without it, there is no way to get the people of NYC to where they need to be.

The union has struck. Existing workers of the Union can retire at 55 – while this is totally reasonable for firemen who sacrifice their body for their job, it seems to me to be over the top for a train conductor or engineer or a token clerk or a mechanic. The MTA has requested that this age move back to 62 for new hires. You could talk me into 70 or even 75.

There are additional disputes about discipline and wage-increases. Supposedly the international union is thinking about shutting down the local and reaching agreement with the MTA. link.

The big question in my mind is should Bloomberg pull a Reagan and fire them all? They are a public necessity, and they have no right to strike. This was done once before in the 20’s when the subways were still privately owned. Management operated the trains. One poor stupid manager pulled a B-train in Brooklyn a little too fast around a sharp curve. The train was an el; it fell; over 200 people were killed. It is now 80 years later; could you bring in replacement workers or does the shadow of this accident still control the rails? What does DL think?

Ahmadinejad's lies find a willing audience
Egyptian Newspaper: 'There Were No Nazi Gas Chambers'
An official Egyptian newspaper has echoed recent declarations from Iran and asserted that Hitler's gas chambers were "rooms for disinfecting clothing," according to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

The newspaper Al-Masaa printed a column "Israel's Lies" by Hisham Abd Al-Rauf, who claimed that Hitler actually was for the Jews and encouraged immigration to Israel, which then was under the British Mandate. "These massacres, which Israel alleges that the Nazis perpetrated against the Jews, never happened. The famous execution chambers [i.e., the gas chambers] were no more than rooms for disinfecting clothing," he wrote.
Here's the MEMRI link.

Strange and not so strange
Believe it or leave it: strange stories of 2005. My favorites:
- Police in Newcastle, Australia, reported a spate of frozen chickens smashing into house roofs with great force. They suspected a prankster with a powerful catapult.

- There were red faces in the office of Croatian President Stipe Mesic after a painting given to him as a gift turned out to have been stolen from a local art exhibition.

- A Japanese woman who paid a contract killer the equivalent of 136,000 dollars to murder her lover's pregnant wife went to the police to complain when he failed to do the job.

- A Los Angeles taxi-driver found a pouch containing 350,000-dollars' worth of diamonds left in his cab. The driver, an immigrant from Afghanistan, simply handed them in to the police.
I don't know why this last story qualifies as "strange" unless it's assumed that immigrant taxi-drivers are thieves.

Schwarzenegger to Graz: Bite Me
How can you not love this guy? "We'll take his name off the stadium! We'll name it after Tookie!" minced the Euroweenies. Now he's ordering them not to use his name any more. Way to pull the rug out from under them, Arnie! Schwarzenegger Tells Hometown to Take His Name Off Stadium
SACRAMENTO — With officials in his Austrian homeland poised to strip his name from the local soccer stadium, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sought to beat them to it Monday, sending an indignant letter demanding that his name be removed by year's end.
Politicians in the city of Graz had begun a petition drive to rename the stadium following Schwarzenegger's decision to allow the execution last week of Stanley Tookie Williams. The governor's refusal to grant clemency to the convicted murderer of four sparked outrage across Europe and revived an on-again, off-again effort in Graz to drop his name from the stadium.

In his letter, Schwarzenegger said he had heard that the Graz City Council planned to order his name removed on Jan. 19. The stadium, which seats 15,400, has carried Schwarzenegger's name since 1997.

Schwarzenegger also wrote that he was revoking his permission for Graz to use his name in any advertising campaigns that promote the city, located 10 minutes from his hometown village of Thal.

Mentioning a separate proposal to rescind the award of a "ring of honor" that was given to him in 1999, Schwarzenegger said in the letter that he does not want the ring any more and had sent it back.

"Since … the official Graz appears to no longer accept me as one of their own, this ring has lost its meaning and value to me," Schwarzenegger wrote. "It is already in the mail."

Schwarzenegger's letter suggests that more executions may be coming. Another death row inmate, Clarence Ray Allen, 75, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Jan. 17.

"In all likelihood, during my term as governor I will have to make similar and equally difficult decisions," he wrote. "In order to spare the responsible politicians of the city of Graz further concern, I withdraw from them as of this day the right to use my name in association with the … stadium. You will receive related correspondence from my legal counsel shortly."

Schwarzenegger wrote the letter himself in German. It was faxed Monday to Graz Mayor Siegfried Nagl, who could not be reached for comment. The letter was translated into English by a press aide to the governor, Katherine McLane.

Last year, Austrian critics of the governor's position on the death penalty sought to remove his name from the stadium. The Graz City Council rejected the effort but suggested it might reconsider.

An Austrian official based in Los Angeles said it has become routine for his countrymen to use Schwarzenegger's national prominence to make political points — in this case, to urge that the death penalty be scrapped.

Efforts to rename the stadium are "a way of gaining attention for their own cause and purposes," said Bernard Faustenhammer, Austrian consul general in Los Angeles. "Schwarzenegger in Austria is a huge public figure…. He's prominently present in Austrian media and almost regarded as a player in national politics."

Schwarzenegger last visited Graz in 2004 during a quick trip to Austria in which he represented President Bush at a state funeral for President Thomas Klestil. He joked with Mayor Nagl after a meeting with regional politicians, telling him that they had something in common: Both are chief executives working with legislative bodies of diverse political backgrounds.

A spokesman for the governor said that by taking this step, Schwarzenegger deprives his critics in Austria of a platform to continually use the stadium's name to embarrass him.

"It's an issue that commonly comes up whenever they want to express displeasure with him as governor," said Rob Stutzman, the governor's communications director, "and it becomes tiresome…. You can threaten to take the name off the stadium many times, but you can only take it off once, and then it's done."
That's what you get for being fickle fairweather friends.
