Speaking the Truth in Pakistan
Davids Medienkritik points out an excellent editorial by Razi Azmi of Pakistan's Daily Times. How often do you hear the truth spoken so eloquently?
George Bush’s military intervention in Afghanistan and invasion of Iraq have attracted the most condemnation. However, the former has been an astounding success (above all, from the Afghans’ point of view), while the latter is hardly the debacle many commentators represent it to be. In Afghanistan, an utterly despicable regime has been replaced by an elected president. Schools and roads are being built where the religious police once trod. In Iraq, except for the twenty per cent Sunnis who rode roughshod over the rest of the population under the previous regime, the people are eagerly awaiting the elections due next month.

Islam and Reform
What an uphill battle this will be. But I'm glad it has finally started. We need to support voices like Mr Shahrour's in every way possible.
Shahrour and a dozen or so like-minded intellectuals from across the Arab and Islamic worlds provoked bedlam when they presented their call for a reinterpretation of holy texts after a Cairo seminar titled "Islam and Reform" this autumn.

"Liars! Liars!" someone screamed at the news conference infiltrated by Islamic scholars and others from the hard-core faithful who shouted and lunged at the panelists to a degree that no journalist could ask a question. "You are all Zionists! You are all infidels!"

The long-simmering internal debate over political violence in Islamic cultures is swelling, with seminars like that one and many newspaper columns breaking previous taboos by suggesting that the problem lies in the way Islam is being interpreted.

Problem-Solving the Islamic Jihad Way
With Yasser Arafat gone and the caretaker Palestinian leadership calling for unity, a return to law and order and the end of the "militarization" -- or terrorism -- of the intifada, Islamic Jihad, like Hamas, is apparently reconsidering its positions and refining its image in order to assure itself a place within the Palestinian fold.
This is like putting on clean clothes without shaving, showering or washing the blood off one's hands.

Stars of the Internet
According to Perseus Development, a company that specializes in tracking and analyzing the "blogosphere," there should be more than 10 million blogs in the United States by the end of the year, including 52 percent created by people younger than 20.
Oh, good grief! Now the peanut gallery is taking over?! I bet they wear "Winnie the Pooh" flannel pajamas. How immature is that.

Shooting Osama
In case you thought that Americans are the only ones on the lookout for Osama, in Costa Rica today, a taxi driver shot a man wearing a Bin Laden Mask
Osama bin Laden take note: You wouldn't be safe in Costa Rica. A startled taxi driver shot and wounded a jokester wearing a plastic mask of the al-Qaida leader, police said Tuesday.

Leonel Arias, 47, told police he was playing a practical joke by donning the Bin Laden mask, toting his pellet rifle and jumping out to scare drivers on a narrow street in his hometown, Carrizal de Alajuela, about 20 miles north of San Jose.

Arias had startled several drivers that way on Monday afternoon. But when he jumped out in front of taxi driver Juan Pablo Sandoval, the motorist reached for a gun and shot him twice in the stomach. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

"For me and I think for anybody else at a time like that one thinks the worst and so I fired my gun," Sandoval told Channel 7 television.

Police declined to detain Sandoval, saying he had believed he was acting in self-defense.

A Girl Without A Face
What would you do if your daughter was born without a face?

When most parents have a baby, they spend months dreaming about what their bundle of joy will look like. Will she look like mom? Will he have dad's eyes? But for one local Navy family, the birth of their daughter didn't give them the answers to those questions. Their daughter was born without a face.
...
But no matter what, these new parents had a wish. "That if there was something wrong, she wouldn't be alone. We wanted to make sure she felt loved," said Tom, as he began to cry. "She squeezed my hand."
Would this little baby girl be euthanised in the Netherlands? Why do I get the sickening feeling that the answer is yes?

Brave Young Men
Thanks to Kosher Eucharist for bringing this to our attention: of the five IDF soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip when a booby-trapped tunnel blew up, every single one was an Israeli Arab.
For going against on the brainwashing of the Palestinian machine and voluntarily enlisting in the defense of their state, these brave young men paid the ultimate price. Because a bunch of terrorists couldn’t stop wanking off into their kaffieyehs over extremist interpretations the Qu’ran long enough to have an original thought enter their heads. Arab-Israeli cooperation is not only possible, it’s happening. But Hamas and Fatah will do their best to ensure that Jews and Arabs never know peace. Will the Arabs themselves ever get tired of their own terrorist groups scuttling every tentative step towards a better future for Israel and Palestine?

A Threat That Can't Be Tolerated: Hezbollah Menaces Israel
Geostrategy Direct (subscription required) says that Hezb Allah has now achieved effective deterrence against Israel, and Israel is beginning to find it intolerable.

It sounds incredible but a Lebanese militia has managed to achieve effective deterrence against the most powerful military in the Middle East.

Israeli commanders have acknowledged that Hizbullah has acquired a missile and rocket arsenal that is so large that the Jewish state does not want to provoke the Iranian-sponsored terrorist group.

Rutgers Researchers Attack Reverse Transcriptase, Cure HIV?
If this pans out it's fantastic news! Hundreds of millions of people in Africa, Russia, Asia won't die for no reason other than poverty and ignorance over the next few decades. Humanity will have cured another disease, and will be immeasurably the richer for it. Please, let them be right and let it be true.

Researchers at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., have developed a trio of drugs they believe can destroy HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, according to a medical journal report.

Another Side of Israel
Bemoaning the way Israel is portrayed in the news is something of a favorite pastime for many American Jews.

But rather than complain that Israel is depicted unfairly in its conflict with the Palestinians, two Silicon Valley executives are taking a different approach.

Eric Benhamou, chairman of 3Com, and Zvi Alon, founder of Netvision, wanted to get the focus off violence altogether and show Americans that there is much more to Israel beyond the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

And Yet, The World Is Not All Beslan
At Winds of Change.NET, Cicero explores his transfixation with the tension between bleakness and beauty in a photograph of a Beslan mother caressing her dead child, and the contrast between that special horror and his family's everyday joy in the child they've adopted.

'The Mother of Beslan' is a symbol of our time. This single photo is the equivalent of Michelangelo's Pietà for the 21st century. I can only try to feel this mother's butchered love screaming out for her lifeless child that she strokes so gently. Her pain blinds me. I cannot imagine her pain. We see in the photo the moment when a mother realizes her child is lost, and forever gone. We see two deaths, not one.
