An inalienable right for murderers
European Parliament president Josep Borrell called on all countries still allowing the death penalty to respect the right to life and end the practice of capital punishment.
"For us in Europe, the right to life is an inalienable right. No one ever loses their right to life, no matter what they have done." Borrell said.
Unless they have spina bifida or are brain damaged or depressed or too sick or too old or too young, of course. Mr Borrell's "inalienable right to life" is not inalienable for every European.

I don't know how the death penalty is applied in Iran and China, I doubt that there's always a fair trial and years of appeals and lawyers working pro bono if they're interested in someone's case. I also doubt that Chinese or Iranians are judged by a jury of their peers or that they're given every possible chance to defend themselves, as it happens in America. What I know is that when millions of people are oppressed by theocratic or communist dictatorial regimes and their lives become cheap, the death penalty is the last in their list of problems. Perhaps Mr Borrell could have a talk with Iran and China about that.

Impeach Sheriff Baca
In the year 2000, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca had a 1.46 billion dollar budget. This year, he has a 1.9 billion dollar budget. And yet, even with that extra half a billion dollars, he's cutting officers from his gang enforcement team, which is down to 150 officers from 190 three years ago. At the same time, LAPD chief William Bratton has increased his anti-gang units' headcount to 350 officers. Gang homicides are up from 164 for the same period last year to 210 this year. Sheriff Baca wants a 0.25% increase in the sales tax, expected to net more than a quarter of a billion dollars a year, before he'll assign more officers to deal with gangs. Baca says that if he doesn't get the money, gangsters will spread out from areas like Compton and start preying on innocent people in previously-safe cities. Is that a promise or a threat, Baca?

Basically, the people of Los Angeles County are being blackmailed by Baca, who is allowing gangsters to kill them freely, and this isn't the first time.
Former Democratic senator Tom Hayden had this to say a few years ago when Baca was trying similar tactics:
Including a somewhat unlikely resistor, former Democratic state senator Tom Hayden, who curtly breaks it down like this: “The story is: Bratton made a point of wanting more police when he became chief. He was turned down by the City Council. Baca didn’t get enough funding from the Board of Supervisors to keep his payroll and to keep his programs going in the county jail, and he made a big fuss about it and he released a lot of inmates to show that he was angry. Those are the two who are driving this. And then you have Hahn, who wants to be reelected as tough on crime."
Is Lee Baca any better than an Al Qaeda terrorist? Why is a trusted government official repeatedly terrorizing his citizens into supporting tax hikes? Why was the half-billion dollar hike from 2000 to 2005 not enough? That's a 33% hike in his budget, and he's still cutting officers? Where is the money going?
The sheriff, who is Latino, said he had worked hard to make the county's many ethnic communities feel connected to his department.

The sheriff has set up 19 citizen groups, such as the Bangladesh Advisory Council and the Gay and Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Advisory Council, to receive input from the county's diverse population.
There's a June election for his job, and Baca has three opponents. Californians, if you can't impeach the terrorist, throw the bum out in June. Before he kills even more of you in his never-ending quest for money and power. You deserve better.

ISM gangster Andrew McDonald caught in Israel again
Andrew McDonald, ISM member, was expelled from Israel in 2003 after the IDF discovered him holed up in the home of a terrorist. He changed his name and re-entered Israel this August, and now he's been caught again.

Israel will probably simply deport him again. In my opinion, Israel should try him and jail him. He's a hostile foreigner determined to break Israeli law and endanger Israeli lives. He thinks Palestinian terrorism is a romantic cause. He must be punished more seriously than mere deportation. That's less than a slap on the wrist, as he has so amply demonstrated by returning. Israel has a chance to make him lose a few years of his life rotting in a jail. It should take that chance, and only expel him upon the completion of his sentence.

What shall we blow up today?
Life in Greece is never boring: Explosion rocks Athens. A blast damaged a post office near the Ministry of Finance in downtown Athens and the anarchist organisation (there's an oxymoron for you) Revolutionary Struggle, which has previously set off other bombs while protesting something or other, is thought responsible for this attack too. Meanwhile, the American ambassador in Greece set off a tempest in a Greek-coffee cup when he claimed that members of the terrorist organisation 17 November are still at large. I think he's right and I think it's part of a bigger problem that Greece has with terrorism.

A journalist said that after the Olympics, Greece sighed in relief and let her guard down. I don't think that's the case. I believe that Greece has become comfortable with terrorism and terror attacks have become part of everyday life in Greece. Greeks will march and protest if the price of bread goes up by two cents, yet for all the decades that the 17 November murderers killed and attacked with impunity, there was never a march or mass protest against them.

Next week, some other previously unknown group will explode something or other--if not next week, the week after that. Once again, no one will protest, there won't be any arrests, anonymous "masked young men" will be blamed, some Revolutionary/Adversary/Contrary gang of idiots will brag about the attack in some long rant justifying their madness and that will be that.

Some things never change in Greece and that gets boring.

Narnia
Did you see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this weekend? Maybe you read the book?

My oldest has a picture-book version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and we have the Focus on the Family audio version of all the Chronicles of Narnia on CD. By getting her hooked on the stories, I feel I've already fulfilled one of my major duties as a parent. We plan to take her to the movie next Friday.

There are few successful Christian sagas. Certainly there are great works like Paradise Lost, Pilgrim's Progress, and The Divine Comedy. There were only two epics that established a Christian ethos in the rich mythopoetic world of Faerie. Isn't it interesting that the authors were good friends in their early years?

America fiddling while China plots
While China steals, spies, trades, and builds military capability, the US Navy is figuring out how to swat a fly with a hammer and completely ignoring the China threat. In fact, the Navy still plans on going down to an 11-carrier fleet.
In China, claimed abuses of intellectual property rights have actually expanded duplication into a guild-like methodology for industrial training and growth. In the future, few Western technologies will remain unmatched by China in both the commercial and military spheres.
In the military sphere, Chinese influence is dismissed by noting the relative weakness of its naval forces. But littoral diplomacy is supplanting a blue-water navy: China, like a latter-day Alfred Thayer Mahan (the renowned 19th century American geostrategist and naval power advocate), is shaping key basing agreements along the oil shipping-sea-lanes between China and the Gulf. Those who assert that Chinese military technology is poor should take note that the US Army has procured Chinese night vision equipment for the Iraqi Army in lieu of US gear.
By the way, China will not become more democratic; its leaders are determined to continue to crush a billion people under their boot:
Chinese President Hu Jintao said recently that China would continue to build Marxism-Leninism, in another sign that China will not make democratic political reforms.

Hu said China's Communist Party must "persist in integrating thefundamental tenets of Marxism with the concrete practice of our country and with the characteristics of the times, and continue tomake a new contribution to enriching and developing Marxism."
His comments followed publication in October of a formal Chinesegovernment white paper that stated China will not adopt Western-style democracy. Instead, the Chinese will continue "people's democratic dictatorship." Under that dictatorship, "democratic centralism" isused to rule collectively by party leaders.
People's Democratic Dictatorship. It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Positively thrilling.
