The Most Misunderstood Dog in the World
This post is dedicated to airforcewife and Ike the “sharpei".

Yes, we are talking about the pit bull–-the dog that makes the news, the dog that is banned in some countries and local municipalities and the dog some people wish extinct. So what is it about the pit bull that makes him the most dangerous dog? Let’s look at the history of dog breeds and pit bulls in particular.

zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
A deeply religious Jewish patriot
A fascinating article by rabbi Shmuley Boteach: Discovering the Jewish Jesus
Jesus Christ is the most famous Jew of all time, but is today remembered as a Christian.

Surprisingly, the Jewish community has accepted this distortion of history, and tends to regard Jesus as an apostate. How odd that the Jews would accept a Christian version of one of their brethren rather than seeking to discover the man entombed beneath the myth.

Like a mummy whose bandages must be removed, 2,000 years of Christian gauze must be stripped away so we may discover the Jewish Jesus. We may do so by reading the original story of Jesus in the New Testament, before it was modified by Pauline and Lucan editors, who worked after the failed Jewish rebellion against Rome in the years 66-70, and whose intention it was to make Jesus less Jewish and more Roman, less a political rebel against Roman rule and more a Jewish religious revolutionary who inveighed against a corrupt Jewish hierarchy.

These Christian editors hid the real Jesus' message of political revolution against Rome, thereby transforming him into a sound-bite-speaking do-gooder who loved the Romans and hated his people.

Credit Cards and Bankruptcy
This doesn't make a lot of sense to me: Credit Card Offers Stacking Up at Homes of the Newly Bankrupt. It's credit cards that got them in trouble to begin with, wouldn't more credit cards bring about the same problem again?

I don't want to write exams, I just don't. I don't want to grade them either. I also don't want to do the final project for the class that I'm taking. Maybe I'll cook instead. After all, I'll need my strength.

zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
'How magnanimous of them'
Yaakov Ish Tam expresses very eloquently the anger many of us have felt these last few days over the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Red WTF outrage: No Jews or Dogs
I am not old enough to remember this myself, but I have heard many first-hand accounts that in the recent past, even in "Jewish New York", hotels, businesses and places of entertainment used to prominently display signs in the entranceway that said "No Jews or Dogs!" There was many a country club in the northeastern US that did not allow any minorities, including Jews, to join. They still unofficially exist today on Long Island and in New England, although at least today (unlike the Red Cross), they have the decency to hide their "eligibility requirements". Of course, as Jews look similar to their WASP neighbors, they would often "make an exception" and let you in as long as you paid an "extra" membership fee and promised never to reveal the fact that you were Jewish.

We need to ask ourselves what Israel or the MDA gains from this newly found "acceptance". The "privilege" to go and save the lives of people who hate us and won't even allow us to display a non-offensive symbol of Judaism on our uniforms and ambulances? Is it really a positive thing that we try so hard to join a club that proudly displays a sign on its front gate "No Jews or Dogs"? Do we need to risk our lives and send our brave men and women over to countries that won't even acknowledge our existence as a people? People who are so repulsed by a non-political historic symbol of the Jewish people that they would rather die than accept aid from "dirty Jews"? Even if this new arrangement will allow Israel to benefit from extra funding, is it really worth the self-denigration that is required to be eligible to receive it?

zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
Cypriot dogs and Englishmen
Britain's Royal Institute of International Affairs, popularly known as Chatham House, issued its verdict on the Cyprus situation, an island forcibly divided and its northern half occupied by Turkey. The Institute concluded that no solution is possible because power sharing between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities "will almost certainly lead to the two sides squabbling over even the smallest issues." The article states that the hopes for a "Cyprus miracle" have been dashed.

I don't know if anyone expects a miracle but the issue is much bigger than "squabbling". I would like to know what does Chatham House think of the murders of Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, surely they were more than squabbles over the height of a footbridge?
The two United Nations Civilian Police had observed two Greek Cypriot demonstrators being set upon by two groups of Turkish Cypriot demonstrators who proceeded to beat them with brutal force. The two United Nations Police went to the assistance of one of the Greek Cypriots (Isaak), and were finally able to push aside the Turkish Cypriots, including three Turkish Cypriot policemen, who were still beating him, it was too late. The location of the killing inside the United Nations buffer zone was about 95 metres from the National Guard cease-fire line and about 32 metres from the Turkish Forces cease-fire line.
The world's chief peacemaker, Kofi Annan, said that because progress in Cyprus "has been negligible," he saw no reason to appoint yet another special envoy to Cyprus. I guess Kenan Akin, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources and murderer of Solomos Solomou, knew what he was talking about back in 1996: "Why are you making the killing of a dog sound so important?" Why, indeed.
What has become known as "the Cyprus problem" has been festering since 1963 when the British-imposed constitution broke down amid clashes and arson between the two communities, which have lived apart since.
Here's a more detailed perspective on this "Cyprus problem".
