Respect for the Peacemakers
From ¡No Pasarán!: Unless (and Until the Time that) Karzai Decides to Oppose Uncle Sam, the First Elected President in Afghanistan's History Is Nothing But a Puppet
But, writes Fabienne Pompey, there is a president (or would-be president) whom the French, echoing a Star editorial, manage to show respect for. His name is Marwan Barghouti and the reason they feel this way towards this "peacemaker" is because a "respected intellectual."

The Sunflower Phone
Scientists said on Monday they have come up with a cell phone cover that will grow into a sunflower when thrown away.

Researchers at the University of Warwick in Britain then helped to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed, which will feed on the nitrates that are formed when the polyvinylalcohol polymer cover turns to waste.
Scientists Make Phone That Turns Into a Sunflower

I'd like that.

Global Guerrilla Campaign in Saudi Arabia
Saudi clerics have stepped up the anti-U.S. rhetoric. In November, they issued a statement that "it was the duty of all able-bodied Muslims to fight the Americans in Iraq." Read Armed Liberal's very informative post about today's attack in Saudi Arabia: This Ought To Be Concerning Us

Legacy Media Priorities
Mark Bowden writes in the Atlantic Monthly that the legacy media shows absolutely no judgement in their choice of stories to cover, giving terrorists comfort, giving them exactly what they want, and encouraging more of the same.

Mr. Bean Wants Free Speech
Mr Bean talks?! I thought he only mumbled...
Comedian Rowan Atkinson -- creator of the hapless "Mr Bean" -- has attacked a planned law outlawing incitement of religious hatred, saying it will curb free speech and humour.

Atkinson believes the measure now passing through parliament will make religion virtually off-limits to satirists.

It might even, he fears, lead to prosecutions, not only for some of his own sketches but for others like Monty Python's "Life of Brian," which was criticised on its release in 1979 for being anti-Christian.

"Freedom of expression must be protected for artists and entertainers," he said on Monday. "We must not accept a bar on the lampooning of religion and religious leaders."

Europe, Your Family Name Is Appeasement
This blistering attack on Eurocowardice by a prominent German CEO in the daily Die Welt is not to be missed.

Matthias Döpfner, Chief Executive of German publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in the daily WELT against the cowardice of Europe in the face of the Islamic threat. Hartmut Lau translated the article for us.
A few days ago Henryk M. Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe - your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true.
Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to agreements. Appeasement stabilized communism in the Soviet Union and East Germany in that part of Europe where inhuman, suppressive governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.
Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo and we Europeans debated and debated until the Americans came in and did our work for us. Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians.

Sounding French
What's in a name? In France, it could mean a job — or at least a foot in the door.

Fed up over a stream of rejections, Fatima Talbi briefly took a new name — one that "sounds French" — to test her theory that bosses give foreign-sounding names the brush-off.

To her dismay, she was right.

Identifying herself as Catherine Lecomte on her resume, Talbi — who is French — quickly got an interview after two rejections for the same job using her real name.

It's just that kind of story that's fueling some in France to push for a solution apparently untried anywhere else: Anonymous resumes.

In the land where "liberty, equality and fraternity" is engraved on coins, Talbi's experience is depressingly common, and discrimination against French citizens of Arab, African or Asian backgrounds extends to things like housing searches.

A Generic Approach to Christmas
I have no particular position on this Christmas business. Or maybe I do. I seriously dislike shopping, crowds, spending money and family dinners. So I vote to abolish Christmas! (Or at least abolish family dinners?)
The lord mayor of Australia's largest city was under fire Friday over a decision to limit spending on Christmas celebrations, a move some critics see as an attempt to avoid offending non-Christian immigrant communities.

Injustice: Blasphemy Laws Make It A Hard-Knock Life For Ahmediyyas, Christians In Pakistan
A man named Iqbal Ahmad has been given a life sentence and a $167 fine for joining the persecuted Ahmediya sect in Pakistan. The article goes into detail on both Pakistan's abuse-prone thoughtcrime laws, the use of which for personal vendettas is skyrocketing, and the disenfranchisement and excommunication of Ahmediyas.

Rashid Javed, a representative of Ahmadis' organisation Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya, told IRIN Ahmad had converted to Ahmadism five years ago against his family's wished.

Their only political organisation, the Jamaat Ahmadiyya, has been marginalised in national politics, largely through the institution of separate electorates. Although Ahmediyas have a strong collective identity and often live in communities together, that identity has not resulted in an equally strong political presence, most likely due to repression and violence.
Ahmediyas have filed complaints to local police and government officials when attacked by other communal groups. However, those responsible are rarely brought to justice and many times the victims from the minority group are arrested under the anti-blasphemy laws.

Blaming The Victim Across Millenia: Shame On Us
Our friend Rahel (LGF's Shira) writes at her lovely blog Elms in the Yard:
In other words, according to this teaching, Dina was responsible on some level for Shekhem’s crime.

What’s the logic here? Do we say that theft victims subconsciously wanted to rid themselves of their possessions or that murder victims had a death wish? Of course not. Likewise the Torah, in exonerating a rape victim of all blame, explicitly compares the crime committed against her to murder :
But if the man comes upon the engaged girl in open country, and the man lies with her by force, only the man who lay with her shall die, but you shall do nothing to the girl. The girl did not incur the death penalty, for this case is like that of a man attacking another and murdering him (JPS translation).

“But you shall do nothing to the girl.? I wish the Torah had added: That includes bad-mouthing her for her misfortune over and over, for more than three thousand years after the fact.

The Torah’s analogy between rape and murder strengthens the assertion that rape is not a crime of uncontrolled sexual desire but rather one of violence.
