People's frustration with butter
One of the most terrible misfortunes is to have the toast ready, the jelly ready and then discover there's no butter in the butter dish which means having to deal with cold, hard butter. The horror! The tragedy! The inconvenience! Well, no more! An end to hard butter misery?
A UK-based company has launched a portable, temperature-controlled butter dish, ButterWizard, which keeps butter at what it says is the optimal spreadable temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has a built-in fan and a chip which together control the temperature, adjustable for different textures, be it super-soft bread, crusty toast or delicate biscuits. "We were trying to find out what people's frustration with butter was. It's either too hard or too soft," said David Alfille, managing director of East Sussex-based company Alfille Innovations Limited.

"ButterWizard heats or cools the butter and you can adjust the temperature to suit yourself."
And there you have it. You're master of your destiny once again.

White is the new black!
The New York Times says that even though the stock market is up, factories are humming, housing is hot, consumer confidence is up, and gasoline is cheaper, and economists expect 220,000 new jobs to have been created last month, unemployment is under 5%, and the economy grew 3.8% in the last quarter, you shouldn't think that means the economy is doing well. It's actually doing worse than you think.

The Economist says that even though Eurozone monetary policy is tight and about to get tighter, unemployment is higher than 8%, growth is a meager 2.6%, private sector consumption shrank in Germany for the third quarter in a row, and economists expect growth to slow to 1.6% next year, you should think Europe is doing just great! It's actually doing better than you think.

If you have any questions, please report to the Ministry of Newspeak, Thoughtcrime and Doublethink.

UPDATE: US growth in the third quarter has been revised upwards, to 4.3%!

No camaraderie accepted
When people really want peace, they grab on to hopes and opportunities to make peace. I don't think this is the case here: Some Palestinians cry foul over peace match.
Sharp rebukes instead of thunderous cheers have greeted some Palestinian footballers who took on the famous Barcelona football team on Tuesday alongside Israeli players.

The peace match played at Nou Camp Stadium in Spain between a joint Israel-Palestinian team and Barcelona may not have exactly set the field on fire. But the game has raised the hackles of some Palestinians, who say their cause has been compromised.

Jamal Muhesin, director-general of the Palestinian Ministry of Youth and Sport, said he was angry that some Palestinian sportsmen could agree to rub shoulders with Israelis athletes.
Never mind that the team's trip to Spain was jointly organized by the Peres Centre for Peace and the Abu Shukr Sport Centre in Ramallah, Palestinian officials are worried that athletic normalization between Israel and the Palestinians would encourage overall normalization between Israel and the Arab world. And everyone knows how evil normalization is; it might lead to peace and then what?

Wishful Thinking vs. Reality
Zalmay Khalilzad told Newsweek that he 'has been authorized by the president to engage the Iranians as he engaged them in Afghanistan directly'. Good luck.

Mullahs, from the other hand, call for defeating U.S. in Iraq and are arming their Baseej Militia from teeth to toe.

Notes on the way to Victory
As someone who is basically an idle flake with a short attention span, I've been down on President Bush lately because of the seeming lack of progress in Iraq and at home. Well, his speech today at the US Naval Academy put my Iraq concerns to rest. One thing I was worried about was that Bush and Rumsfeld were becoming estranged, which doesn't seem to be true. Bush spoke of him fondly in his speech. Reassuringly, Senator Warner of the Senate Armed Services Committee was there too. Senator Warner was one of the Senators who met with field commanders directly to ascertain the state of Iraq. As Time reported it, the commanders wanted more troops because they were having to leapfrog about Iraq constantly. President Bush paints a much different picture: we're turning forward operating bases over to Iraqi units and consolidating our presence there. I'm starting to think Time's leaker was a Democrat's staffer who made highly selective edits to the field commanders' testimony.

Much more under the fold.

How generous
Switzerland pardons 10 people who smuggled refugees from Nazi Germany. Switzerland remained neutral during WWII at the expense of her national conscience; it's one thing to try to maintain neutrality in a war, another to refuse entry to "people persecuted for racial reasons only." I realize that this was the world back then, Jew-hatred was pervasive and accepted, and Switzerland had already taken in 300,000 refugees. The Swiss government has apologized to the Jewish people for her wartime policies so maybe it's not my place to criticize them but I will anyway because I can't stand the hypocricy.

Yemen's Little Drug Problem
Up to 90% of Yemeni men chew qat, a plant that mimics the effects of amphetamine, and a growing number of women and children are also using it. The drug is blamed for most of Yemen's ills, from widespread poverty to disease, yet it's legal and its production is a major source of employment and income. Chewing Qat Blamed for Yemen's Poverty.

'Qaeda of the Jihad in Palestine'
An al-Qaeda cell has formed in Gaza since Israel's withdrawal and apparently they're plotting their next move which could be a strike in Tel Aviv. They've already claimed credit for the missile attack on Neve Dekalim.

Ignoring Religious Persecution
Excellent commentary by William F. Buckley: Christians Afoot. The Christian world needs to pay attention to the forgotten Christians in China and North Korea, their situation brings to mind early Christian martyrs.
Nine years ago in South Pyongan province, a unit of the North Korean army was assigned the job of widening a highway connecting Pyongyang to the nearest seaport. Demolition of a house standing in the way revealed, hidden between two bricks, a Bible and a list of 25 names: a Christian pastor, two assistant pastors, two elders and 20 parishioners. The 25 were all detained and, later that month, brought to the road construction site, where spectators had been arranged in neat rows. The parishioners were grouped off to one side while the pastor, the assistant pastors and the elders were bound hand and foot and made to lie down in front of a steamroller. As if following a script written in early Roman history, they were told they could escape death by denying their faith and pledging to serve Dear Leader Kim Jong II and Great Leader Kim Il Sung. They chose death.
