Doris Glück - Regina S.
What must it be like to be married to a Jihadi? When I read this article I thought that Doris Glück sounded like the wife of a serial killer, under some spell of some sort. Can it really be only fear?
But one day in 1996, she said, she went with her husband and others to the place near a mountain where three Serbs were executed, an incident that her husband filmed. One victim was shot to death by a group of women whose husbands or sons, he told her, had been killed by Serbs.

"Then there was a second man, a Serb, on his knees," Ms. Glück said. "I saw a big knife and then I saw his head cut off. I sleep with this memory every night. Afterwards, the mujahedeen played football with the head. Then a third Serb was shot by the men.

"I was so shocked that I couldn't tell where my husband was, if he was one of the men who shot, or if he only filmed."

Radical Islam in Germany
An excerpt from "All Things Considered"
POGGIOLI: Research conducted by a Turkish think tank has revealed a significant Islamic revival among the third generation of Turks in Germany, who had always been perceived as the most moderate Muslims in the country. And 47 percent of people of Turkish origin polled said they have to be careful not to become German. The main causes cited by the study are economic difficulties and rejection by German society at large.

But Germans, haunted by guilt for their country's racist Nazi past, have tried to compensate by showing a laissez-faire attitude toward Muslim customs and traditions. For example, polygamy is recognized by the German welfare system, which hands out health benefits even for a second wife. Kanon Kolat(ph), who chairs an umbrella group of Turkish associations in Germany, is outraged.

Russian Parliament: Foreign Intelligence Agency Involved In Beslan
It wasn't just Chechens...Russia's parliamentary commission investigating Beslan has found disturbing evidence of an unnamed foreign power's intelligence service being involved.

Russia’s parliamentary commission investigating the September Beslan hostage crisis has announced evidence of the involvement by a foreign intelligence agency, underlining earlier speculations that foreigners — not just Chechens — played a large role Russia’s worst terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 330 people in a three-day siege.

“For the moment the evidence that we have of this involvement is indirect, so I consider it premature to name exactly which special service it is,? Interfax quoted commission head Alexander Torshin as saying.

Torshin, deputy speaker of the Federation Council, Russia’s upper house of parliament, said that “when we gather enough convincing evidence, we won’t hide it.?

Earlier the parliamentary commission sparked concern when it said that the truth about Besland was “too scary? to reveal.
I immediately thought "Iran", but they are getting a lot of help from the Russians in their nuclear quest. Who could it be? Pakistan's ISI? The Jooos? The elusive Michael Johnson?

Euthanasia in the Netherlands
A hospital in the Netherlands — the first nation to permit euthanasia — recently proposed guidelines for mercy killings of terminally ill newborns, and then made a startling revelation: It has already begun carrying out such procedures, which include administering a lethal dose of sedatives.

The announcement by the Groningen Academic Hospital came amid a growing discussion in Holland on whether to legalize euthanasia on people incapable of deciding for themselves whether they want to end their lives — a prospect viewed with horror by euthanasia opponents and as a natural evolution by advocates.

In August, the main Dutch doctors' association KNMG urged the Health Ministry to create an independent board to review euthanasia cases for terminally ill people "with no free will," including children, the severely mentally retarded and people left in an irreversible coma after an accident.

Hamas Wants To Go Legit, And A Hudna, And A Pony
In an interview with Israel Radio, Hamas wants ten years to gear up to destroy Israel. I don't think that's a very good plan. Instead, I'd like to suggest a "continuing to kill their ass for the next ten years with missiles launched from helicopters" plan.
Senior Hamas leader Sheikh Hassan Yusef told Israel Radio that the militant Islamic organization is interested in joining a national unity government with the Palestinian leadership, and to that end would agree to a hudna (ceasefire) that would last 10 years.

Yusef said he would not rule out a halt to suicide bombings against Israeli targets during final status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Hamas would also refrain from vetoing any agreement which in his view would restore Palestinian rights.

Yusef, who was recently released from prison after his arrest during Operation Defensive Shield in April 2002, called on Israel and the international community to reconsider its characterization of Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Hamas' desire to participate in political decision-making among the Palestinian leadership is a reflection of the organization's "maturity," Yusef was quoted as saying by Israel Radio.

Hamas is aware of the new realities and would like to take advantage of the opportunities that it believes has been presented to it, Yusef said.

Iran, Europe and the Nukes
Why don't the Europeans seem more worried about Iran acquiring nuclear weapons?
They accept it for many reasons, of which two seem paramount: They have huge financial interests tied up with the Iranian regime (billions of dollars worth of oil and gas contracts, plus other trade agreements, some already signed, others in the works); and Iran is the last place in the Middle East where they can play an active diplomatic role. This is particularly acute for France, which knows it will long be a pariah to free Iraqi governments, and views Iran as its last chance to thwart America's dominant role in the region. Sad to say, there is no evidence that the Europeans give a tinker's damn either about the destiny of the Iranian people, or about Iran's leading role in international terrorism, or about the Islamic Republic's joining the nuclear club. They are quite prepared to live with all that.

An Open Letter from a Saudi Islamist to Those who Shirk Jihad:
You who shirk Jihad, what excuse can you give Allah while your brethren in the prisons of Abu Ghreib and Guantanamo and Al-Ruways and Al-Ha'ir are stripped naked? I believe you saw those pictures that came out of the Abu Ghreib prison. These pictures [also reflect the situation] of our brethren in the prisons of Israel, in America, and [in the prisons of] their collaborators in this region. You who shirk Jihad, the Crusaders and the Jews violate the honor of noble women and oppress the heroes of the [Islamic] nation in the detention camps of America, Israel, and their accomplices – so what are you waiting for?

The Soldiers
The transition from wartime service to home life always has been fraught with difficulties. Some interpret "The Odyssey," Homer's ancient tale of a Greek warrior-king's long and arduous journey home after the Trojan War, as an allegory for the trials of return from combat.

Not all soldiers are able to complete that transition. After the Civil War, the men who remained haunted by the horrors of the conflict were said to suffer from nostalgia. After World War I, it was shellshock and after World War II, battle fatigue. Since the Vietnam War, psychologists have referred to post-traumatic stress disorder.

The war in Iraq is evolving into a kind of conflict that can be especially wearing on the psyches of the soldiers and Marines who are sent there, according to military psychologists and others who have studied the stresses of warfare.
