Abizaid To Iran: We Can Still Kick Your Butt, Don't Be Uppity
This appears to be part of the same interview with General Abizaid that I linked in the previous post:
A top US commander has warned Iran and other countries to never underestimate US air and naval power, discounting concerns that US forces are too tied down in Iraq to respond to challenges elsewhere.

"To deter a nation state you should never underestimate the air and naval power of the United States," General John Abizaid, the commander of US forces in the Middle East told AFP in a joint interview late Friday.

"Why the Iranians would want to move against us in an overt manner that would cause us to use our air or naval power against them would be beyond me. We have an incredible amount of power," he said.

Abizaid made the comment in response to questions about whether the United States, with the bulk of its ground forces tied down in Iraq, had the means to meet other contingencies such as a conflict with Iran.

The United States suspects Iran's nuclear programme is aimed at developing atomic weapons, but Tehran insists it is for civilian purposes only.

Abizaid pointed to the US-led assault on the former Iraqi rebel stronghold of Fallujah as an example of the overwhelming force that can be brought to bear by a relatively small ground force of some 10,000 troops backed by air strikes launched from US aircraft carriers in the Gulf.

"And so we can generate more military power per square inch than anybody else on earth, and everybody knows it," he said.

Tough talk from the man who commands 220 000 of our active-duty troops, nearly half the total.

General Abizaid: We're Insufficiently Bold, Let's Punish Financiers, Internet Propagandists Of Jihad
General Abizaid, an Arab-American I guess, has some tough words about how seriously we're fighting the war on terror.
A top US general called for bolder international action to stop the spread of Islamic extremism, suggesting curbs were needed to prevent the Internet and other media from being used by groups like al-Qaeda.

"Why is it that people have the right to get on the Internet and spread this hatred and insanity without there being some curb, some law?" said General John Abizaid, the chief of the US Central Command.

"To me if we think this is some kind of freedom of speech to put on a picture of someone getting their head chopped off on the Internet and people have the right to purvey that, that's not the world I want to live in, and it just encourages this kind of behavior," he said.

"They use the media in a way that's very, very clever to develop the perception of great strength, when in fact they don't have great strength," he said.

Sharon's Stillborn Coup D'Etat
In The Escape Artist, Gershom Gorenberg details some disturbing suppressed history in Israel.
The report that General Ariel Sharon proposed a coup d’état in May 1967, like so much else we have heard about the man, is both shocking and utterly unsurprising. No one in Israel has a longer record of ignoring rules and authority.
He's still a heroic figure to me, a great man. And I wasn't even born at the time.

We're Leaving TypeKey
Sorry, Six Apart. We love your software. We don't love your authentication service though-too inflexible. Here's why it sucked:
  • having to sign in about 30 times before it "took"
  • not being able to set how long my visitors' cookies lasted. What's with this mandatory short expiration? Talk about a pain.
Those two things were enough to make it worthless. I deleted all the TypeKey code from our templates and deleted our TypeKey token from the weblog config. If you're a TypeKey user, Thousand Sons, Joe Katzman, and so on, sorry, we're not using them any more.

Gender Identity in Saudi Arabia
A Sex-Change Problem Complicated by Disputes Over Inheritance
“The next day I asked for a family meeting with my brother and sisters at our parents’ house. I told them everything and the meeting degenerated into a screaming match with threats and accusations hurled at me. I told them that I had not committed a crime and so should not be treated as an outcast. I declared that I had made the right decision which had saved my life by correcting my sex to what it should have been from birth. From that time, my family has had nothing to do with me. They have deserted me. They say they will never set foot in my house as long as they live. They also threaten to go to court and ask that our father’s estate be re-divided according to my new sex. In other words, they wanted to take half my inheritance. They filed a suit even though I am still considered a man and am legally a male in Saudi Arabia. I do not know what to do or how to change my sex legally. What I do know is that I am having a breakdown because society rejects me because of the operation I had. I am also afraid that my share of our father’s estate will somehow be taken away from me.?

....
Another scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Qadir Al-Maabi, a specialist in inheritance law, has a different opinion. “God has created the human race as men and women as stated in the Holy Qur’an. The holy book also makes it clear how much a man and a woman should inherit. There is no mention in the Qur’an of a ‘she-male’. In other words, the features of both sexes cannot be in one person. How could a child’s sex not be known immediately at birth when the signs are obvious and the latest scientific equipment is used??
Hmm... He really should read Middlesex

Scientists Propose 'National Parks' On Mars
Microbiologist Charles Cockell and astrobiologist Gerda Horneck want to turn seven areas on Mars into 'national parks', conserved in their pristine state. 'It is the right of every person to stand and stare across the beautiful barrenness and desolation of the Martian surface without having to endure the eyesore of pieces of crashed spacecraft scattered across the landscape, they write. Cockell is not against colonization, though. He says that setting aside some areas for conservation would free up the rest of the planet for settlement.

You know, I was worried it was gonna be a mob scene, but now I can rest easy, knowing that even after we get there, we can still go camping in the wilderness areas...

Former Turkish DMOZ Editor Is Sentenced to 10 Months In Jail
H. Ertas, a Turkish editor of the Open Directory Project has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after being found guilty of editing a category about the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). Ertas' lawyer, Suna Coskun, explained that his client had worked as a voluntary editor at the Open Directory Project during his studies at the Euphrat-University and had been responsible for the Kurdish category. At the same time he became interested in Kurds and undertook his own research into the subject. As a voluntary editor, he had sorted the directory submissions but could not be responsible for their content. Therefore there could be no penalty under international law, according to Coskun. His activities could in no way be understood as 'support for a terrorist organisation' and thus Ertas' release was appropriate. The Turkish court sentenced Ertas to 10 months in prison and a fine of 416 million Turkish lire ($293). The sentence is not eligible for probation.

This is a summary of earlier attempts to stifle Kurdish sites, including a campaign to have DMOZ's then-parent company Netscape remove the Kurdish category from DMOZ.

"..and now you’re talking like you’ve been a leftist scholar poet,

talking about Saudi, Zionist, intergalactic government conspiracies -

spitting blame and hate, with no solutions you might see,

just to sound like a "conscious" poet,

just to get a WHAT! in the crowd, poet.

And I ask you poets!!!!!

Can we really make these strong statements on the middle east -- before we walk our little f---ing feet,

to a bookstore,

to a lecture,

till we play twister on a map of the world,

right foot Palestine,

left hand Israel.."
