Dead Gay Alexander and the Angry Greeks
People, Alexander the Great is dead. He's been dead for a couple of thousand years. I mean, really, he doesn't even have any living relatives to sue for defamation! Who cares if he was gay?!
A group of Greek lawyers are threatening to sue Warner Bros film studios and Oliver Stone, director of the widely anticipated film "Alexander", for suggesting Alexander the Great was bisexual.

The lawyers have already sent an extrajudicial note to the studio and director demanding they include a reference in the title credits saying his movie is a fictional tale and not based on official documents of the life of the Macedonian ruler.

This is not the first time Greeks have been angered by suggestions Alexander was homosexual and had affairs with young men.

Two years ago hundreds of northern Greeks from the province of Macedonia, where he was born, stormed an archaeological symposium after one speaker presented a paper on the homosexuality of Alexander. Police were called in to evacuate the participants.

European Parochialism
Yet as my weeks in the Old World stretched into months and then years, my perceptions shifted. Yes, many Europeans were book lovers—but which country’s literature most engaged them? Many of them revered education—but to which country’s universities did they most wish to send their children? (Answer: the same country that performs the majority of the world’s scientific research and wins most of the Nobel Prizes.) Yes, American television was responsible for drivel like “The Ricki Lake Show?—but Europeans, I learned, watched this stuff just as eagerly as Americans did (only to turn around, of course, and mock it as a reflection of American boorishness). No, Europeans weren’t Bible-thumpers—but the Continent’s ever-growing Muslim population, I had come to realize, represented even more of a threat to pluralist democracy than fundamentalist Christians did in the U.S. And yes, more Europeans were multilingual—but then, if each of the fifty states had its own language, Americans would be multilingual, too. I’d marveled at Norwegians’ newspaper consumption; but what did they actually read in those newspapers?

Protesting Against Syria
Nice to see people protest against some country other than Israel..
Large numbers of security forces watched, but did not intervene, as about 3,000 students from several universities and right-wing Christian activists converged on downtown Beirut shouting "Syrians out!"

A smaller group of protesters, followers of Druse leader Walid Jumblatt, chanted the national anthem near the prime minister's office and held placards reading: "No to hegemony" and "Freedom, Sovereignty, Independence."

So, About Iraq's Soldiers...How'd They DO?

The U.S. military expressed satisfaction with the combat performance of Iraqi military and security forces in the assault on Fallujah.

U.S. officials acknowledged that hundreds of Iraqi soldiers failed to show up for Operation Dawn, the battle for Fallujah that began on Nov. 7. But they said the 2,000 Iraqi troops deployed in the U.S.-led operation have fought well and so far sustained light casualties.

Lt. Gen. John Sattler, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said Iraqi troops were fighting well and often leading the advance in Fallujah.
Those hundreds that never showed up for duty aren't really the true story; they're just the story of our sorry-assed recruiting procedures, which the Iraqis have now taken over and will be fixing. The nascent Iraqi military: finally, some Arabs that can fight like men. That's the real story. Continued on page A14.

It feels just like Stockholm Syndrome . As pressure grows in the Western world for reform in Iran, Iran's citizens appear to be rallying around the fundamentalist islamic regime. Like good little captives decrying that "Today America, we love you. If you try to harm our horrible evil vile mullahs, we will rise in defense of them and kill you." The police are at the door and all of a sudden these murdering raping torturing psychopathic vermin mullahs, are looking mighty cute in those robes. And the smell isn't really that bad. And so what a few tens of thousands of liberal Iranians have been disappeared, they are not here now and we are doing fine without them, so why should we care?

The current media blitz on the shooting of an injured Iraqi insurgent by a Marine in Fallujah last Saturday highlights the current inability of the news media today to provide informed and accurate background to a story (for example, see "Military Investigates Shooting of Wounded Insurgent," CNN.com, Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004). It is of vast importance that in the initial coverage of a story of this kind that the media intelligently and accurately place this story in full context, but so far, this has not occurred.
Amnesty International comes in for a deserved talking-to as well. That, and how this kind of tempest in a teacup hurts our fighting men and women, after the jump...

Iran Cheats, Retreats, Laughs At World
Diplomats: Iran Is Readying Nuke Processes. They must be much closer than we thought if they're being this brazen...
Iran is using the last few days before it must stop all uranium enrichment to produce significant quantities of a gas that can be used to make nuclear weapons, diplomats said Friday.

Iran recently started producing uranium hexafluoride at its gas processing facilities in Isfahan, the diplomats told The Associated Press. When introduced into centrifuges and spun, the substance can be enriched into weapons-grade uranium that forms the core of nuclear warheads.

Iran last week agreed to suspend uranium enrichment and all related activities in a deal worked out with Britain, France, Germany and the European Union. The deal, which takes effect Monday, prohibits Iran from all uranium gas processing activities.

But the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Iran was exploiting the window until Monday to produce uranium hexafluoride at its plant in the central city of Isfahan.
I feel strangely unreassured by Iran's deal with the Yurras. Cute of them to come back waving their little piece of paper signed by Hitler and talking about "peace in our time". Doesn't mean a damn thing, though. Outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell isn't too sanguine either.

Germans Do The Right Thing For Sudan
Germany will deploy 200 troops to provide air support to the 4000 African Union troops
The Cabinet approved a plan to commit up to 200 German troops to the mission, which would see African peacekeepers transported in German planes.

The mandate, which would be valid for six months, requires parliament's approval in a vote expected on November 26.

The United States, Britain and the Netherlands already helped transport members of the 4,000-strong AU force, the government said in a statement.
