A public humiliation
Would you do this to your daughter?
Tasha Henderson got tired of her 14-year-old daughter's poor grades, her chronic lateness to class and her talking back to her teachers, so she decided to teach the girl a lesson.

She made Coretha stand at a busy Oklahoma City intersection Nov. 4 with a cardboard sign that read: "I don't do my homework and I act up in school, so my parents are preparing me for my future. Will work for food."

Mom Makes Daughter Stand on Street Corner

If you're a parent, what methods do you use to discipline your children and how effective are they?

NVA Officer: Iraq Not Vietnam
Some may call it stating the obvious, and they would be right, but it's still fun to read this and store it for future use. That use being rubbing it in the faces of the America-haters. This guy is a top ideologist for the Communist rulers of Vietnam and his father was a guerrilla fighter for the North. He says the Iraq resistance is hopeless and won't succeed. It has nothing but nihilism on its side, and none of the various insurgency movements have a broad pan-ethnic, pan-religious base, nor are they likely to obtain one. You've heard all this before, but for a Vietnamese official to say it...that's rich! Now if only there were some surviving Minutemen to tell Michael Moore he's smoking crack.

He also makes a pretty interesting claim that the US deliberately created the insurgency's state of disarray by dividing them in order to conquer. I hope he's right because it would make me feel a lot better about our strategy there.

Signs of Intelligent Lifeforms @ Network Television
How do you tell when an old-line media business probably isn't doomed? When it isn't declaring that new technology is making the sky fall. This article about how the top broadcast TV networks aren't afraid of TiVo and other time-shifting tv-top devices, but rather embrace it, tells me that they're more concerned about serving their customers than they are about fighting the obsolescence of their business model tooth and nail and criminalizing their customers. Or worse, installing spyware on their customers' computers. Instead the heads of network TV say they're making more money thanks to TiVo, because their customers watch more TV. They also say that viewers don't completely ignore commercials with the "skip commercial" button, but rather keep an eye out for interesting ones and often even rewind to catch one they were looking for.

What a breath of fresh air! This was an extraordinary conference held by the broadcast networks with Wall Street analysts, where they presented their (extensive) research and made their case that time-shifting devices like TiVo were actually good for their business.

It stands to reason. I don't have a TiVo, but who doesn't tune out crappy commercials anyway? That's usually the time when people talk a bit about the show or get new drinks. I go so far as to mute the TV when really annoying commercials are on. TiVo simply gives you an extra way to mute bad commercials. Network TV will survive the TiVo age, and I'm glad they realize it.

Maybe Sir Bob keeps in touch by Western Union?
I admit that I'm not very conscientious about keeping in touch and if it wasn't for email I would have lost touch with some friends and relatives because I never call. I mean to call, I just don't do it. Then they call me and I get embarrassed that I haven't called and it's always them who call me and I feel guilty so I don't know what to say and it all gets very awkward.

I also admit that I'm not very conscientious about checking my email. I do check it but I do it reluctantly because there's so usually so many emails in my various inboxes that I feel intimidated. And it's a neverending job too, it's like doing dishes; I clean my accounts, I feel proud and productive for ten seconds and then more email starts coming in.

And then there are the forwards. The dreaded, hated forwards. Some of my friends have put me on their email lists and I get all sorts of forwards, ranging from MoveOn (trash) to Family Research Council (trash). Some of my friends get sneaky and take out the "forward" part on the subject line, so I innocently open their email expecting to see another picture of kitties or the grandchild of their neighbour's aunt and I get a forwarded long-ass something or other, usually in large, bold fonts.

Still, I prefer email to phone calls and I don't understand why Bob Geldof would rail against e-mails.

China's investment bubble still frothy
A flood of Western money and a corrupt lending system with poor oversight have combined forces in China to further inflate its overinvestment crisis. Something like 46% of the Chinese GDP is invested in plant development, from office buildings to factories to residential units. In a downturn (which is coming, because no economy, not even China's, is immune from cycles), a lot of this malinvestment will be corrected painfully. Loans will go bad, backed by property that isn't earning a sufficient return to service debt, and banks will become insolvent.

Banks which, not coincidentally, the Communist government is sprucing up for sale to foreign morons with yuan signs in their eyes, who will be left holding the empty bag when China defaults. Or does anyone think China's government will pump hundreds of billions of dollars into its former state-owned banks after having sold them to Westerners?

According to the article, China now gets only $1 of additional output for every $4+ that it invests, which is much higher than India's rate, and evidence of wasteful investment. China could use a lot of investment to upgrade its rural society, but the same urbanites who have gotten rich, leaving their rural countrymen in the dust, are the ones who are playing with all this speculative money, paying bribes and using guanxi to get unjustifiable loans, and building worthless luxury apartment buildings and office space. It's all very glitzy, but it won't do much for China's 900-million-strong rural populace. A coastal bubble which, when popped, will bring pain to all of China.

So much for Communist equality.

Hubert Sumlin
Hubert Sumlin* is one of my favorite guitar players - and one of my favorite people.
* What? You've never heard of Hubert Sumlin?!

You could say that Hubert is the ultimate "guitar player's guitar player". His unique style influenced and inspired such acclaimed players as Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, and many others. Jimi Hendrix once called him his favorite guitar player. Eric Clapton and Keith Richards appear on his latest release, About Them Shoes. In the video: "Hubert Sumlin: Living the Blues" , Stevie Ray Vaughan says emphatically, "Hubert is the heaviest, most original guitar player I've ever heard - and that's a fact!"

He is a historically significant originator whose playing has been described as twisting, darting, unpredictable and 'wicked' and 'bent' .

A new biography, Incurable Blues: The Troubles and Triumph of Blues Legend Hubert Sumlin just came out about 6 months ago. (Check out the great picture on the cover).
