In Praise of War Sluts
There is a lot to be said for war sluts. In previous wars, before we all became so sophisticated and socially conscious, war sluts were the women who sent the men off to the front with a smile on their faces.

Europe and Israel
Bat Ye'or, in FrontPage:
France’s love affair with Arafat became a European state policy after the 1973 Arab oil embargo, although some European leaders had already been convinced of Arafat’s “just cause? by earlier PLO air piracy and terrorist murders (December 1971 London; in 1972 Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Brussels, Lod, and in February 1973, Khartoum). Such terrorist achievements brought the opening in European capitals of PLO offices, following the French example in 1975. The unshakable European-Arafat alliance was sealed by the Venice Declaration (1980) when Arafat was recognized as leader of the PLO, the only representative of the Palestinian people, and Israel was summoned by the European Community to negotiate only with him.

Moderate Islam
Stephen Schwartz makes a good point: many of us have a monolithic perception of Islam. Islam is not the same everywhere. I've never seen a Muslim woman in a chador in Thrace, in Macedonia, in Albania. So what's the deal?
The enforced uniformity of Wahhabism must be overthrown; then, with the restoration of Islamic pluralism, every verse in Qur'an, every hadith, and every precedent in Islamic law can be analyzed anew. I believe much can and will be reaffirmed as a foundation for moderation. But it is doubtful that Muslim tradition will be reordered according to the dictates of simplistic and bigoted non-Muslim demagogues. It is peculiar to me, in this context, that the long-standing recognition that Islam is divided between a fundamentalist minority and a nonfundamentalist majority seems to have disappeared from the minds of many Westerners; to them, as to the Muslim radicals, there is only one Islam.
What Defines Moderate Islam?

Bin Laden Positively Chatty These Days: Tells Pakis Fight Americans
Washed-out has-been recording artist Osama bin Laden has a new album out on the internet. Either that, or it's some weird hoax.
“We urge our Muslim brothers in Pakistan to use all their capabilities and whatever they possess to prevent the American crusader’s troops from invading Pakistan and Afghanistan,? said the statement, signed: “your brother in Islam, Osama bin Laden.?
Umm...too late.
The statement also referred to deaths during an anti-US protest in Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city. While violent protests have occurred elsewhere in Pakistan, there have been no reports of a demonstration in Karachi that resulted in fatal clashes.
Nurse, up his meds!
Today’s Web statement included a pledge to Pakistani Muslims that “we are steadfast on the path of holy war ... with the true believers of the heroic Afghan people, under the leadership of Mullah Mohammed Omar.?
Hee! Surely this is a put-on.

Breaking: Margaret Hassan Dead, Slaughtered On Video
The British embassy in Iraq said that a video tape showing Margaret Hassan being killed was probably genuine. Her family believe that she is dead as well.

US/Iraqi Push To Retake Mosul Sectors Begins
An operation to retake police stations and push into terrorist-thick neigborhoods in Mosul has begun. Iraqi police were told to stay home because the terrorists have police cars and uniforms.

It's not exactly a major operation. A US brigade (5000 troops) and an Iraqi brigade are tasked to the operation, but only a fraction of the forces are being used.

BOLO: Stolen Fuel Tanker
When a fuel tanker is stolen, normally the motivation is parts, or illegal toxic waste dumping, and normally they find that tanker's carcass later.

So 7 months later, where is this 44-foot fuel tanker?

German Economics
Why do European politicians criticize the U.S. so much? One reason that immediately comes to mind is that they try to deflect deserved criticism from their own people by focusing on America's real and imagined faults.
The Schroeder-Fischer administration has been unable to combat high unemployment in Germany (which stands at almost twice the rate of the U.S.), create an attractive tax system for companies, safeguard the social security system or reduce the budget deficit (which is again way and above the limits set by the European Union even without leading costly wars).

But now a German government official criticizes the U.S. for not following a sound and successful economic policy.

Bernard Lewis Revisited
Can Islam and Christianity and Judaism co-exist? Sure, why not. They did, once upon a time. Can Islam and democracy co-exist? Yes, they can. Radical Islam flourished in the absence of democracy.
I think Ataturk understood that if you fall through Islam, you fall through a trap door. And in fact, I think the journey out of Islam that Ataturk did was brilliant. And to the extent that the Muslim world now has forgotten this. . .they will pay dearly for it
"Bernard Lewis Revisited" by Michael Hirsh

Read it all, it's a captivating theory.
