Joschka Fischer and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
From Davids Medienkritik:
We are shocked - shocked! - to learn about the rude treatment Germany's world-class Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer received during the Arafat burial ceremonies in Cairo.

First he had to fly in circles waiting to land like many other guests. Then he was jostled and pushed.

What a cruel fate for a former street fighter and friend of some of Germany's deadliest terrorists!

At the very least, the Egyptian security forces should have had the decency to let Fischer exchange some pleasant memories with old buddies of Palestinian terror groups attending the ceremony...
Shocking! Joschka Fischer Jostled and Pushed!!

David does a wonderful job keeping us informed about his corner of the world. Medienkritik has been nominated in "Best Topic Category" of "Best of the Blogs" Award. Please go vote for him, he truly deserves it.

The Legacy
As is often the case in the modern information age, just about everything in his life is known and almost nothing in his proffered legend is true. The man airbrushed in Thursday-morning encomiums from Kofi Annan and Jacques Chirac (among others) as the courageous symbol of Palestinian nationalism was not really named Yasser Arafat, was not a native Palestinian, and tended to sit out warfare with Israel whenever conventional fighting was involved.
Read it all, we need to remember who Arafat really was. The Father of Modern Terrorism

The Poisoning
I knew the conspiracy theories about Arafat's death would start soon. In the "Arab street" it's practically expected. Apparently it's expected in the "Greek street" too, since the Greek news mentioned that Arafat had been poisoned and that the French doctors had confirmed it. The doctors had done no such thing but now the damage is done: the poisoning has become a fact.

Mosul: The Next Fallujah
Last week at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Kathleen Ridolfo wrote an extensive analysis of recent developments in Mosul and indicated some ominous signs that, as John Robb might have it, it was becoming a replacement bazaar for the terrorists who're no longer safe to plot in Fallujah. Ethnic cleansing, terrorist flyers everywhere, the imposition of shariah...well, she was looking in the exact right place, as the Associated Press is reporting that the police have lost control of Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, amidst very high levels of attacks by the terrorists.

Russia Nixes Conscripts For Chechnya Combat
Russia to Cut Back Troops Deployed in Chechnya, to Only Use Professional Soldiers. I've been advocating this for a long time. Maybe now Russia can start fielding a credible offensive line on the front lines of their war on terror.
The Russian military will cut its deployment in Chechnya by about 1,000 troops and stop using conscripts in the war against separatist rebels next year, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Friday.

Complete Election-Day Preview!
Hot off the press! The Las Vegas Mercury-Sun presents an election day preview! (Yeah, I know it's late. But it's extremely funny.)
The 2000 presidential election was decided--as all elections should be--by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia leaning across the breakfast table and shoving half a grapefruit in the face of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor while screaming that she would vote with the boys or end up gutted in a ditch with her intestines wrapped around her throat and her heart mounted on a stick.

Unlike that one, the 2004 campaign has been a tad testy.

Zarqawi Escaped Fallujah?
Audio Recording Purportedly by Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi Urges Fighters to Hang On: easy for him to say. He's slipped town, after all. I'm convinced of it. How else would his tape get onto the internet if he's in a completely cordoned-off city with no electricity? Such a brave Arab leader, as usual...
