The First Successor
Arafat is dead. Now, who the heck is this guy?

Parliament Speaker to Succeed Arafat
The Palestinian parliament speaker will be sworn in as Palestinian Authority president, in place of Yasser Arafat, in the coming hours, a Cabinet minister said Thursday.

Arafat died early Thursday at a Paris hospital.

Palestinian officials have said they want to ensure a smooth transition. Under Palestinian law, Parliament Speaker Rauhi Fattouh, a virtual unknown, is to become caretaker president until elections are held in 60 days.

A Reason to Like Democracies
Now I've outed myself. And I'm happy to do so
WHAT WILL MY parents say? How can I tell my wife? Perhaps they already know. Surely they must have guessed. I’m pretty sure my colleagues have worked it out. They keep giving me odd looks.

I suppose I’ll just have to come right out with it.

Mum, Dad, Nicky, I am a neoconservative. Yes, me, a man with two small children.

There have been rumours about me for ages, of course, but I would have kept my mouth shut to this day if it hadn’t been for all those TV films about gangs of subversive neocons. I decided that I couldn’t live a lie.

The neocon tendency has always been in me; it’s been there since as long as I can remember. However, until about ten years ago, it was latent. And then I had lunch with a man who specialises in converting young men. He is known as the Godfather.

The round earth's imagined corners
We are not alone
Americans who voted for George W. Bush on November 2 are celebrating this week, and despite the anti-Bush hysteria in much of the Western press, we're not celebrating alone. At what John Donne called "the round earth's imagined corners," other freedom-loving souls in their hundred millions celebrate with us, unseen. Like us, they're feeling joy and relief and renewed resolve, but they could use a little recognition too, because throughout this long campaign, John Kerry and the elite media, here and in Great Britain, have been insisting that they don't exist, that "the world" consists of old Europe, the U.N., and a bevy of NGOs and Arab states, all consumed with hatred and fear of us as a result of the "unilateral" actions of our president. The real world is a very different place, and this is a good time to take a fresh look at it, in order to recognize our friends as well as our adversaries, and get some perspective on both.
...

Here, then, is the list of 32 Coalition partners to salute, listed by population size, from largest to smallest within each region. EU members are starred.

Asia's 10: Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Australia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Singapore, New Zealand, Mongolia and Tonga. Total population: 295 million.

Eastern Europe's 15: Ukraine, Poland,* Romania, Czech Republic,* Hungary,* Bulgaria, Slovakia, Georgia, Moldova, Lithuania,* Albania, Armenia, Latvia,* Macedonia, and Estonia.* Total population: 167 million.

Western Europe's 6: Great Britain,* Italy,* Netherlands,* Portugal,* Denmark,* and Norway.* Total Population: 155 million.

Central America's 1: El Salvador. Population: 6 and a half million.

A toast to them all!

Proud Parent of a U.S. Marine
Read this story, it's very moving. My heart goes out to Mrs. Evnin.
FORGIVE Mindy Evnin if she's not up for cake and candles today. Even if she knows how important this birthday was for her son.

On this day in a Philadelphia tavern, the Continental Congress gave birth to the Marine Corps almost a full year before the Declaration of Independence. More than two centuries later in Fallujah, America still looks to the Marines to do the job no one else can.

And no one knows better than Mindy Evnin the price: On a dusty Iraqi roadside in April 2003, her son, Cpl. Mark Evnin, gave his life wearing that same uniform.

But you hear only admiration for the corps from Mindy.
Fortunate Son

Mourn The Victims, Not The Murderer
Amcha (Hebrew for "grassroots"), the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, sent out this email.
Join Amcha -- The Coalition for Jewish Concerns as we mourn the
victims of Arafat's violence. On the day that Arafat's death is official, we will gather at 5pm in front of the PLO Mission to the UN for a memorial service in memory of all the people that Yasser Arafat has murdered. Please join us for this important event -- we must make the world aware that they are mourning not a hero, but a cold blooded terrorist. An email will be sent to confirm the details prior to the gathering.

For more information, contact Amcha at (718) 796-4730.

Tom Ridge Out; DHS Not Seen As Career-Enhancing Post By DC Insiders
The job has taken a heavy toll on their psyches, and many of the Department of Homeland Security's officials are set to leave when the new Bush administration starts, including its chief executive, Tom Ridge.
"It's a tough, tough job," added the executive, who said grueling hours and the stress of dealing with the round-the-clock threat of another major terrorist attack had taken their toll on several senior officials.

Nor is the burden likely to ease at all in the coming years. The department has "a pretty heavy agenda" going into the second term, according to Gannon.
I think we can all be grateful that they pull their hair out so we can be safe in our homes. Ominously, however, it may already be very difficult to attract the most talented Americans to work for DHS.
One factor possibly weighing in the calculations of senior officials is that the department is not seen by Washington insiders as a career-enhancing institution.

"It's a mess," a third former administration official said bluntly.

The former official, who now works with a major communications and government relations agency, says their firm does not take on any clients who want them to lobby Homeland Security.

"There may be some in this town who say they can get you through that maze, but I wouldn't believe them," the former official said.
Bush is an MBA. I hope he's thinking about this. We need people to be clamoring and competing for the job, not trying to avoid it.

Islamic Army In Iraq Captures US Spyplane
At the Jawa Report, Rusty pokes a little fun at the Islamic Army of Iraq who posted this picture at their now-taken-down website.
Luckily I grabbed the text before they got shut down; it looks like Rusty misunderstood because it's one of our planes they're mugging for the camera with, not some new plane invented by them. Still, rather comical and ridiculous, and Rusty was right to mock them. Wow, they shot down one of our little flyers. GREAT WORK GUYS.

What Stuff Is Allawi Made Of? We'll Find Out Now
As US forces battle their way into Fallujah, currently holding 70% of it and moving in on the center, the terrorists have kidnapped members of Allawi's family. This was probably a long-planned move, because the imminent Fallujah assault has been leisurely broadcast over the last couple of months to all and sundry. Likewise, Allawi was probably well aware of the dangers, and had most of his family well-protected; the terrorists would probably like to get his nuclear family, but had to settle for a cousin and the cousin's daughter-in-law.
Armed men snatched a cousin of Allawi and the cousin's daughter-in-law from their home in Baghdad, and later a militant group calling itself the Ansar al-Jihad threatened to kill the hostages within 48 hours unless the Fallujah siege was ended. The group's claim to be holding the captives could not be verified.
UPDATE 8:42 AM: It's even worse than I knew. As it turns out, it's his first cousin, who is 75 years old, and his best friend. We really will find out what he's made of now.

Ashcroft Out; His Legacy As Attorney General
John Ashcroft won't be with us in George W Bush's second term; in the first shakeups in Bush's cabinet he and Commerce Secretary Don Evans have announced that they will be returning home. CBS News is unusually fair in this article about John Ashcroft's legacy over the last four years: Ashcroft's Mixed Legacy
The fact is that the successes of the Justice Department during Ashcroft's tenure -- and there have been many -- have been of the lower profile variety; the type that don't necessarily make great copy and certainly don't generate exciting press conference opportunities, except when the defendant happened to be Martha Stewart or Kenneth Lay.

To prove this point, perhaps the single greatest legacy of the Ashcroft Justice Department is its change in emphasis away from punishing people who commit crimes to preventing people from committing them in the first place. This sea change in thinking isn't exclusive to the Justice Department; it's occurring, with varying degrees of success, at the FBI and in virtually every other law enforcement and intelligence gathering organization. It has altered the way federal prosecutors do business; the way they handle cases; the words they use when they argue in front of a judge. It has instilled a sense of drama and danger to the criminal justice system that I'm not sure existed before.

This change would have occurred no matter who was presiding over the Justice Department. But the notoriously hands-off Ashcroft deserves credit for quickly recognizing the need for that change and for pushing it as best he could past the bureaucratic obstacles well-known in Washington.

If a future terror attack is thwarted, if a truly bad guy is apprehended before he can commit terror, it will be as much because of this big-picture change as it will be because of good footwork by the good guys. This is a controversial position because it turns on its head 200 years of American law. But the terror attacks on New York and Washington turned on its head 200 years of conventional wisdom about crime and punishment. Desperate times, right?

More under the fold.

Srebrenica
We hear Ariel Sharon being called a war criminal. We hear George Bush being called a war criminal. If only people were so righteous about the real war criminals... Serb Report Shows Massacre Plan

A Serb commission's final report on the 1995 Srebrenica massacre acknowledges that the mass murder of 7,800 Muslim men and boys by Bosnian Serb forces was planned, an international official said Monday.

The report on the worst massacre of civilians in Europe since World War II was presented to the Bosnian Serb government last month but has not yet been made public.

...

Although Bosnian Serbs have long been blamed for the massacre, it was not until this past June — following the Srebrenica commission's preliminary report — that Serb officials acknowledged that their security forces carried out the slaughter.

The number of victims has long been disputed, with Bosnian Muslim officials claiming 8,000 men and boys were killed in Srebrenica. But Fassier said the commission found that 7,800 were killed after it compiled 34 lists of victims.

Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, his top general, are wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity in Srebrenica and elsewhere during the 1992-1995 war.
