The New European Man
Come join us to create the glorious New European Man of tomorrow, comrades!
Jonathan Lockhart, who I found in the comments over at the neighbor's shack, notes an audacious proposal by the EU
“… we must commit ourselves to building a political union. This will require, first of all, a new project for the Union. It must first be given the necessary policies and powers to enable it to embody the model of European society, and then full political legitimacy through the strengthening of European democracy. This requires not only the politicisation of the institutions, but also the development of a political arena and the emergence of the European people.? (Building a Political Europe: 50 proposals for tomorrow’s Europe)
and has some helpful suggestions! One of them is not "go [anatomical impossibility] yourself". But it might as well be...some of his thoughts on the new European people:
A Single European Language
The first thing we need if we are ever to have a European people is nothing less than a Single European Language. Looking at the figures, I discovered that English is the pre-eminent language within the EU. Indeed, according to The Times, more than 40 per cent of Europeans claim to speak English as a first or second language, which is more than French, German, Spanish and Italian combined. Thus the institution of English as the Single European Language would be a natural step towards European political union. In deference to other native tongues, of course, European English would include various words and phrases from the discarded languages such as French (cul-de-sac, déjà vu), Spanish (tapas, siesta), Italian (pasta, mafia) and German (Blitzkrieg). As a further gesture, the Academy for European English will be based in Paris (in the offices of the former Académie française, naturally).
A Common European Cuisine
Try to think of a dish that combines all of the different styles and tastes of Europe. This is not easy, but I think I have it: Hungarian goulash. Naturally, it would have to be adapted to accommodate other traditions. European goulash would be cooked in a curry sauce. It would include optional seafood and could be served on a bed of pasta. Bon appetit!
Go read it all, it's funny.

Jewish Anti-Semites
Something had been puzzling me: is it possible to be Jewish and be anti-Semitic? I had come to the conclusion that yes, it is, after visiting Jews sans Frontieres. Here's a very interesting article on this subject, by Rachel Neuwirth:
The existence of "black sheep" in families is not all that unusual. What stands out among various ethnic groups is the unique degree of malevolence exhibited by the Jewish black sheep against their fellow Jews, which would then qualify them as Jewish anti-Semites. Simply having Jewish ancestors is no obstacle to being an anti-Semite.

We can consider a spectrum of moral behavior ranging from the most ethical to the most evil. This article deals only with consciously (in my opinion) anti-Semitic Jews and not with those Jews who are only misguided into supporting evil, but who do not consciously intend to do harm. Jewish anti-Semites usually pose as Jews with a legitimate goal, such as promoting peace or simply exercising their right of free speech for a noble purpose.

It is hard for many people to believe that those of Jewish ancestry could actually be anti-Semites. To the uninitiated and the unsuspecting, their arguments can even seem persuasive, all of which can be confusing in determining who is right and who is wrong. This article suggests some measures by which to detect the Jewish anti-Semites. It will also cite specific examples of such. In addition, it helps to have a grasp of history, plus individual judgment and common sense in detecting the presence of actual Jewish anti-Semitism.

In general, the following characteristics are often indicative of Jewish anti-Semites:

Iran: The Fate of the Howeyzi Family
According to this Persian story, a political activist in the Iranian south-western city of Ahwaz is taking refuge in nearby villages and his father and uncle were killed by authorities.
Mr. Mehdi Howeyzi [مهدی حویزی] is a political activist in Ahwaz who had a prominent role in the student uprising of July 1999. The first time he was arrested in July 17, 1999, he was tortured for several days which left him with a broken right leg. After his temporary release, authorities arrested his father, Mr. Hooshang Howeyzi [هوشنگ حویزی] and put him under brutal interrogation. Knowing nothing about his son's activities, the older man suffered heavy stress which brought on a heart attack and he passed away shortly after.

Mr. Mehdi Howeyzi was arrested again at his father's funeral for speaking out against the regime. The authorities warned him to stop his political activities or he would face the same outcome as his father. He was released 3 days later.

Nevertheless, the young dissident continued his activities until he got arrested for the third time. This time they kept him in solitary for 20 days, under torture which caused heavy injuries to his skull. After he agreed to change his way of activities, they released him. This time he started to approach his objectives in different ways. Filming public executions, political cemeteries and poor areas of the city and sending them to Iranian blogs and political sites abroad, were among the ways he chose instead of directly criticizing the government. His uncle, Mr. Hamid Howeyzi [حمید حویزی] was helping him in collecting materials and offered him his building to manage his activities.

On the morning of July 21, 2004 Mehdi was out filming a public execution in the city. While he was secretly filming, 2 agents tried to approach him and he decided to leave the area. He managed to escape to a friend's house and they transferred him to a village nearby where he is still hiding.

In the meantime authorities stormed his uncle's building, confiscated all his books and films and took his uncle into custody. After days of searching, the body of his uncle was found by his family under the city bridge, showing death by torture.

Islam And Spiritual Deprivation
At Faith Freedom International, Mohd Sagheer sadly notes how anti-sensual and anti-romantic Islam is.
As I stand below the green grass valley looking at the distant misty mountains beyond the pine trees in awe and wonder, a breeze of tranquility descends upon me. I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

"One of the most beautiful experiences on Earth" . I ponder.

Then suddenly the cool air is ripped apart with the siren of azaan (call to prayer) from a near by mosque.

Iraq Was Supplying WMD To Terrorists In 2002
Excerpts from the book "The Secret History Of The Iraq War" contain some fascinating revelations.
In the fall of 2002 Iraq crossed an unacceptable threshold, supplying operational weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to bin Laden's terrorists. These developments were confirmed to the Western intelligence services after several terrorists -- graduates of WMD training programs -- were captured in Israel, Chechnya, Turkey, and France, along with documents related to their activities. On the basis of pure threat analysis, the United States should have gone to war against Iraq, as well as its partners Syria and Iran, in fall 2002. By then there was already unambiguous evidence indicating the urgency of defusing the imminent danger posed by Iraq and its primary allies in the growing terrorist conspiracy.

Erekat "Heartbroken" As Some Israelis Celebrate Arafat's Death
File this one under "sheer chutzpah".
Erekat chided Israel after some people celebrated the reports that Arafat had died.

"I hope the Israeli public will show sensitivities. I've seen some Israelis dancing in the streets, hugging each other other yesterday," Erekat told CNN. "I think it's alien... I cannot describe my feelings. It's heartbreaking to see Israelis hugging and kissing in such circumstances."

After Israeli media reported Thursday night that Arafat had died, some young Orthodox Jews gathered in a downtown Jerusalem square to celebrate - singing, dancing, distributing sweets and declaring that one of their greatest enemies was "on his way to hell."
Yes, Saeb Erekat, it's so very alien. Palestinians wouldn't know a thing about that. They dance in the streets because innocents died, not because evil unrepentant murderers died.

They would never hear of such a thing. It's alien!

Bush Won On National Security, Not Gay Marriage
E.Nough blogs at Thinking Meat that there is no way Bush's resounding victory was built on the loathing of his base for gay marriage, and builds his case with copious linkage and analysis. He really puts it together and demolishes this nascent myth utterly.
A new notion is coming into the fore, as the Left, assisted by a still-compliant media, attempt to explain the thorough shellacking the Democrats received on Tuesday: it's all those Evangelicals and Catholics, who came out of their lairs so they could support George W. Bush over "moral issues." This is shorthand for: Kerry had it sewn up, Bush was a war-mongering chimp, but Karl Rove dug out all the latter-day fag-hatin' Cotton Mathers in the Bible Belt, who came out in droves to make sure gays couldn't get married. The Christian Right is happy to go along with this notion, hoping to claim more influence.

There is only one problem with this: it makes no sense, and is not supported by the data.

Let's get the easy ones out of the way first. Two states were considered "swing" going into this election, and crucial to Bush: Ohio and Florida. Florida did not have a no-gay-marriage amendment on the ballot.

Ohio did. It passed easily, with 3,249,157 votes -- 62%. Yet George W. Bush only got 2,796,147 votes -- 51%. Even assuming every single Bush voter also voted to prohibit gay marriage, that leaves over 400,000 Kerry voters who did the same. Even in Oregon -- where Kerry won by 65,000 votes -- the ban on gay marriage was adopted by a margin of 236,607 votes, giving it a 57% majority, the smallest of the 11 states where it was an issue. And why wouldn't someone against gay marriage vote for Kerry? It's not as if Kerry's position on the subject was any different from Bush's.

The rest of the states -- Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, and Oklahoma -- were all either safely pro-Bush, or else lost to Kerry. Some "wedge issue"!
He concludes
Sure, those who consider his "religious values" important chose Bush overwhelmingly -- but they were only 8% of the electorate, bringing him 7.2%. He got an equal number, though, of people who chose him because they wanted someone "honest/trustworthy" (7.7%) and twice that number chose him for being a "strong leader" (17.8%) and taking "a clear stand on the issues" (13.4%).

In other words, Bush got re-elected because the country thinks he says what he does and does what he says, and because it approves of both. The Republicans can only hope that the Democrats, convinced of yet another Rovian plot and spurred on by their media echo chamber, start on another wild goose chase, unable to distinguish between religion and morality. Which is ironic, considering how often they accuse Republicans of the same thing.
Read it all for it is darn good, yo.

Cox And Forkum Announce A New Book For Christmas
Cox and Forkum say their new book, Black & White World II, will be out in time for Christmas.
Here's a quick look a what we have planned for the immediate future, along with a quick look back.

First of all, we've been posting a higher volume of cartoons than usual over the last month. With the election over, we will be returning to our normal pace of three or four new cartoons a week. We've picked up many new readers over the last couple of months, so we hope everyone will continue to visit.

The big project at the moment is our second book, Black & White World II, which we hope to release before Christmas. The planned book will feature a knock-out, full-color illustration of Uncle Sam by John. It will contain cartoons starting from September 2002 and going all the way through this week's presidential election. That means over 400 cartoons. Most have appeared on this site but a few have never been seen, including one or two that missed the mark. We will make an official announcement as soon as the book is available for ordering.

The book will, of course, contain our John Kerry cartoons, which gives us an excuse to look back at some of them.
I've always loved John's Uncle Sam! That's what Uncle Sam looks like in my mind, exactly how they draw him.
How come Kerry lost? They know.
It's rare that comments are open over at Cox and Forkum's joint but they are now. Go tell them what a great job they're doing! Although as Objectivist artists they don't really care what you think. Heh.

Suha Insisting Dead Arafat Be Kept On Life Support
From WorldTribune.com:
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has died. He was 75 years old.

Israeli and Palestinian officials said Arafat died on Thursday in a military hospital in Paris. They said Arafat was deemed clinically dead, but is still attached to life support systems on the insistence of his wife, Suha.

The problem is that Arafat is still the only Palestinian official who can pay the bills. And it is unclear who, if anyone, has access to the estimated $2-3 billion in his personal Swiss bank accounts, according to a report in the current edition of Geostrategy-Direct.com. Even his wife is said to be unaware of how to access the funds.

Arafat continues to hold the purse strings to the Palestinian finances. For the last decade, he has been the final, and often only word on payment to everybody from the suicide bomber to the janitor. Not a dime was paid without Arafat's okay.
She's trying to figure out how to abscond with the money, that's why he's being kept on life support. She's used to that million dollar a week allowance.
Israeli officials confirmed that Arafat died on Thursday, Middle East Newsline reported. They said Arafat was termed brain dead and physicians have stopped attending to him.
No question. He's dead, and not coming back.

How Sharon Eliminated Arafat
Uri Dan in the Jerusalem Post writes:
At first, Sharon succeeded in making Arafat irrelevant to international diplomacy, with the support of the American administration. Now, even if the best French doctors (at the orders of President Jacques Chirac) succeed in prolonging the life of the Palestinian war criminal from the Mukata, it seems that Arafat is broken in body and spirit.

Sharon has thus again proved that determination to achieve an objective pays off.

No longer do Sharon's enemies both inside and outside Israel call for the elimination of Arafat and Sharon in the same breath, "for the sake of peace." Arafat has apparently left the stage, leaving Sharon behind.
...
In fact, Sharon nearly came to grief in this matter when he was elected prime minister on February 6, 2001. Sharon was almost persuaded to meet with Arafat and shake his hand before starting negotiations.

This terrible idea was proposed by a corrupt Israeli called Yossi Ginossar, a former GSS official who has since died and who made millions in deals with Arafat.

Sharon almost fell into the trap laid for him by Arafat with the aid of Ginossar and a political idiot close to Sharon.

However, Arafat then made the greatest mistake of his life by continuing and even intensifying his terrorist activities to an extent that roused Sharon from his momentary slumber and restored his alertness.

From that time onwards, Sharon no longer wanted to hear about Arafat – until he trapped him in the Mukata after forbidding him to travel to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in December 2001, after the massacre of the passengers of the bus in Emmanuel.

In this way Sharon avoided the mistakes made by his predecessors. All the Israeli prime ministers who shook Arafat's hand seemed to have become cursed: Yitzhak Rabin was murdered; Shimon Peres was defeated; Binyamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak fell. All of them shook Arafat's hand and even hugged him.

The only one who avoided the temptation was Sharon, as he once publicly promised in an interview with me for The New York Post in October 1998.

When Sharon was appointed foreign minister in Netanyahu's government, he was quoted in a giant headline in the New York press: "I will never shake Arafat's hand."

Historically, Arafat brought Sharon to the position of prime minister. Only the war that Arafat started on September 29, 2000, caused Barak's fall and Sharon's success in two elections because the Jews justifiably believed that Sharon was the sole leader capable of winning the unprecedented war of terrorism started by the Palestinians.
You know, I admired Binyamin more than Ariel based on nothing more than the fact that he speaks much better English and looks better on tv. I'm switching allegiances. Ariel Sharon at least has managed to win this thing, and he did it without shaking hands with The Ugliest Man In The World. My most sincere congratulations to Ariel Sharon. I'm very gratified to read this in Guysen this morning:
The Minister for Justice Tommy Lapid specified that Yasser Arafat will not be buried in Jerusalem, a city "where are buried the kings of the Jews and not the terrorists Palestinian".
Yeah! Right on, Tommy Lapid. I have a feeling he would have been buried in Jerusalem if Peres was Prime Minister, permanently staining Israel's eternal capital.

Comically, Arab conspiracy theorists have decided that Israel poisoned Arafat, and his cooks are being tortured, of course.
On April 14, 2004, as revealed by Sharon himself, he informed President George W. Bush that he no longer regarded himself held by his promise to Bush in their first meeting in March 2001 not to harm Arafat. President Bush replied that it would perhaps be best to leave Arafat's fate in the hands of the Almighty. Sharon said that one should sometimes help Him.

It is therefore not surprising that the Palestinians are spreading a conspiracy theory that Israel poisoned Arafat.

The cooks in his kitchen at the Mukata have already undergone rigorous interrogations in the matter.
They'll probably turn up dead, because they're collaborators, don'cha know.

Israeli Private Sector Filling Training Gaps
Via the Associated Press: 4 American embassy guards working in Iraq, 3 German security for the Saud family and 16 others are receiving training in tactical combat, Arab culture and counter-terrorism at the Counter-Terrorism Training Center in Israel.
"We feel we can give some of our experience to our friends all over the world," said Tzafrir Pazi, the chief instructor at the Counter Terrorism Training Center, who described himself as a former senior field agent in Israel's Shin Bet security service.

"Israel is known for its expertise in these areas," said Christopher Purdy, 23, currently working as a bodyguard for the No. 2 man at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, Ambassador James Jeffrey.

Purdy, a former Marine from Seattle who is employed by a civilian security company, said the Israeli knowledge was particularly helpful in dealing with suicide bombers.

"Two weeks ago four members of my team were killed when a suicide bomber infiltrated into the Green Zone," he said referring to the heavily fortified Baghdad enclave that houses the embassy.

He hopes his new training will help him avert similar attacks.

On Thursday the group repeatedly practiced repelling convoy ambushes.

As the role-playing terrorists set off explosives, jumped out from behind rocks and fired blanks at the cars from M-16 rifles, the guards burst from the vehicles hitting the attackers with paint balls, knocking them over and kicking away their rifles.

Sirens wailed and smoke grenades blanketed the area as other convoy guards hastily surrounded the "V.I.P," beating a coordinated retreat to another vehicle that would spirit them out of the danger zone.

"We need this," said Scott Stezelecky, 28, a native of Boston, who is going to Iraq in a month to work for a security firm. "We will be running the gauntlet on the highway of death three or four times a day," he said.
Price tag? At least some of the participants are paying their own money for the training, up to $10,000 for this course and one on risk management.
The Israelis are so good at this stuff that our men are paying their own money to be trained by them, and not amounts to sneeze at either. While motives of lucrative security contracts and job promotions are probably foremost in participants' minds, this sort of training should be more widely available to our troops; it would be, if we would stop keeping Israel at arm's-length to appease Arab anti-semitism.
