Why's Drudge Down? Because Level 3 are a floating vortex of SUCK and GREED
Slashdot has the goods on why Drudge is down for some of you: Internet Partitioning - Cogent vs Level 3?
"Internet partitioning and Tier 1 ISPs are something most people don't know much about (myself included). Today, however, some Slashdot readers might have run into some issues involving these two topics. Cogent Communications and Level 3, both Tier 1 ISPs, are apparently having some 'undisclosed' disagreements, causing an Internet partition by turning-off or deactivating their peering point. Cogent Co. has released a statement explaining their side of the problem, however they have no mention of when the problem will be fixed, or when they will sort it out. This partitioning is a problem because any [single-homed] computers that are connected through Cogent Co, can not connect to [single-homed] computers connected through Level 3. Having spent all day sorting out this problem, I ask Slashdot: Isn't there a better way that the issue of peering can be handled/regulated? If not, does the future hold a scenario in which the Internet is split into several separate networks, only to be connected at the whims of large corporations?"
Apparently some of you are on single-homed connections, meaning that your ISP buys upstream bandwidth from only one Tier 1 provider. Also meaning that Level 3's dickish behavior hit you where it hurts. Bloggie is hosted on a multi-homed network, so one Tier 1 provider's assyness doesn't affect us too much. I'll leave the Bloggie Drudge Report mirror up (refreshes from Drudge every five minutes) until the children at Level 3 grow up.

Muslim illegal aliens penetrate Ft. Bragg
Who's minding the store, anyway? This is getting ridiculous.
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) - Three people who taught foreign languages at the Joint Special Operations Command Center at Fort Bragg were arrested on immigration charges, federal officials said.

While workers at U.S. military installations may have access to sensitive work sites, authorities said the three men did not.

"What's important to remember is they did not teach any classified materials, and they were not exposed to any classified materials," JSOC spokeswoman Tina Beller said.

Two Indonesian natives, Nurkis Qadariah, 34, and Sayf Rimal, 37, were arrested Tuesday and charged with possessing and using false documents, U.S. Attorney Frank Whitney said.

Ousmane Moreau, 38, of Senegal, was arrested Monday and charged with being in the United States illegally, Whitney said.

Qadariah and Rimal are accused in a complaint of using counterfeit resident alien cards and falsely saying that they were lawful permanent residents of the United States in order to get a job with Florida-based B.I.B. Consultants Inc. to teach foreign languages at Fort Bragg.

All employees of the company must go through background checks, and checks on the three men "came back clear," Daniel Guillan, director of government and contracting for the company, told WTVD-TV in Durham.

Two years later, Italian in a coma: "I heard everything!"
In coma for 2 years, patient says he heard all - More Health News - MSNBC.com
ROME - An Italian man who spent two years supposedly unconscious in a deep coma, written off by doctors as nearly-dead, awoke saying he heard and understood everything happening around him during the long ordeal, his family said.

Salvatore Crisafulli, a father of four, is describing his case as a “miracle" which proves that lost causes are anything but hopeless and his recovery appeared to strengthen the hand of Italians opposed to end-of-life solutions.

Even though the case is not medically comparable, his brother called Crisafulli “an Italian Terri Schiavo case" with reference to the brain-damaged Florida woman who died in March after her feeding tube was removed.

“The doctors said that I wasn’t conscious, but I understood everything and I cried in desperation," Crisafulli was quoted as saying in Italian media on Wednesday.

The comments were relayed through his brother in Sicily as Crisafulli, 38, slowly started recovering.

He emerged from the coma, caused by a 2003 road accident, three months ago but only began speaking recently. His first word was “Mamma", his mother told the press.

News of his recovery hit Italy at about the same time as a national bioethics committee defended obligatory care for unconscious patients — even those who opposed extraordinary medical measures to keep them alive.

The government committee, which acts as a reference point for lawmakers, voted in favour of the stance late last month, but the position paper is still being finalised.

“To feed an unconscious patient through a tube is not a medical act," said the committee’s president, Francesco D’Agostino, in reported comments confirmed by his office.

“It’s like giving a bottle to a newborn baby who can’t be nursed by its mother ... And then we reflect on the Schiavo case. The woman was left to die of starvation."
God bless Italy. I wish our "bioethicists" were more inclined to err on the side of life. A thimbleful of cognac to annie for this heartwarming story...

Anglicans Dislike Pro-Zionist Evangelicals
Why am I not shocked that the Church of England hates Christian Zionism? I am surprised, however, to discover how old an idea Christian Zionism is among American Protestant theologians.

US Evangelical support for Israel 'has never been more widespread' - news from ekklesia
In a speech that will be greeted with concern by many Christians in the UK, a specialist has suggested that American evangelical support for Israel “has never been more widespread than it is today".

The comments which will alarm many, come from Southern Baptist religious liberty specialist Richard Land, who was addressing a gathering of Christians and Jews in Washington.

The comments will come as a disappointment to many Christian peacemakers and church leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury.

In a joint letter to British Prime Minister Tony Blair last year, Dr Rowan Williams and Dr David Hope warned about the dangers of Christian Zionism.

They suggested that "theological work" needed to be done to "counter those interpretations of Scripture from outside the mainstream of the tradition which appear to have become increasingly influential in fostering an uncritical and one-sided approach to the future of the Holy Land."

A survey from the US has suggested that evangelical Christians in America overwhelmingly support Israel's right to kill terrorist leaders.

Evangelical Christians have also been seen as “natural partners" in opposing the proposed two-state solution because of their theological views on Israel.

But speaking at a briefing sponsored by a pro-Israel organization, the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission said the understanding that God has given the Holy Land to the Jews forever in an unconditional covenant is a “settled conviction" for most evangelicals.

That belief was not discovered by evangelicals in the 19th century, he suggested, but was rediscovered two centuries before by the Puritan forefathers and passed on to evangelicals.

His speech marked the second time in a week Land had spoken on evangelicals and Israel before a Washington audience. On Sept. 22, he participated in a dialogue with members of the Council on Foreign Relations regarding evangelicals and the Middle East.

In his most recent speech at the Stand for Israel briefing, Land said 18th century evangelicals “inherited from their Puritan forebears an interest in the land and the people of Israel as they related to prophecy and end-time events. [Massachusetts pastor] Increase Mather and other American Puritans in the 17th century, for example, had predicted that Israel would be restored politically and spiritually in the future, before the thousand year reign of Christ on the earth."

That belief, which Land said he believes is taught in the New Testament, “was taken up by the most influential and probably the most gifted theologian that America has yet produced, Jonathan Edwards, in the 18th century," he said. Edwards “was absolutely determined when there were no Jews in the Holy Land that the Jews would return to the Holy Land," Land said.

Such evangelical belief, as well as support for Israel, has continued, manifesting itself in the years leading to the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 and in the decades since, Land said.

He cited an August poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life that found white evangelicals gave stronger support to Israel than any other group. In the survey, 54 percent of white evangelicals sympathized more with Israel than with the Palestinians, while only seven percent favoured the Palestinians over Israel.

Land acknowledged he does not speak for all “conservative, Bible-believing Christians."

“There are those who accept what is called a replacement theology, particularly many in what is called the reform tradition, who argue that Israel has now been replaced by the church." Many who hold to that view support Israel “based on other arguments," he said.

“[W]hile not all evangelicals believe [God’s covenant with Israel still exists], more evangelicals believe it today than ever before in the history of the Protestant faith since [Martin] Luther, and those evangelicals make up a higher percentage of American voters than ever before in the history of our nation," Land said.

“It is a deep religious conviction in our bone marrow, in our genetic code -- God gave the land of Israel to His chosen people the Jews," he said. “And God blesses those who bless the Jews and curses those who curse the Jews.... And we have seen no more dramatic demonstration of it than we’ve seen in the 20th century. Look at the 20th century history of Russia and Germany, and compare that to the 20th Century history of the United States."

Land said he believes a major reason God has blessed the United States “to the extent that He has and has not judged us more than He has and as much as we deserve is because we have been the least anti-Semitic nation in the West, and ... from even before the U.N. vote that established the Jewish state, we have been the strongest supporter of Israel."
UPDATE: not to tar all Anglicans with the antisemitic brush-Anglicans for Israel exists! Thimbleful of cognac to Pooh.

Iraqi military progress: slow and steady, they're getting there
This piece by Murdoc at Winds of Change.NET is a must-read:Iraqi divisional HQ takes charge
The 6th Division Assumes Authority: The baby steps continue in the process to build Iraq's new army. This is the sort of thing that gets totally overlooked while the hand-wringers go on and on about how the Iraqi military will never manage to get control of their own country.

Yes, the number of Iraqi battalions capable of independent operations is apparently down to one from three. But no one seems to want to really talk about what the difference between Level 2 (mostly independent) and Level 1 (fully independent) is. At both Level 2 and Level 1 readiness, for instance, the Iraqi forces plan and conduct their own operations. The difference isn't who does the fighting, the difference is who provides logistics, artillery fire support, medical evac, and other non-direct combat support services.

This isn't to minimize the contribution or importance of these types of units, or to say that the Iraqi army doesn't need to perform the duties for themselves. But it's very important to understand what the military is saying when they're telling us about the Iraqi army's capability for "independent operations".

From the news reports and the punditry's remarks, I get the definite impression that they are mistaking "not capable of independent operations" for what the military calls Level 3. Level 3 units in the Iraqi army operate with Coalition forces, under the direction and usually in support of combat operations by front-line Coalition combat troops. A small Iraqi unit attached to a US battalion, often held in reserve or sent to provide perimeter security, for instance, is an example of a Level 3 unit. Level 3 is "on the job training", and is where the Iraqi combat troops get their feet wet.

Level 2 units, though not capable of "independent operations", are often fully combat trained, equipped, and battle-tested. Iraqi units incapable of "independent operations" can enter into battle without any US troops alongside them. They just need to have American logistics to bring them ammunition and close air support (for instance) available to assist if required.

Does this need to be addressed? Absolutely. Is it troubling that a couple of months ago there were three battalions capable of operating without any US support whatsoever and now there is only one? Absolutely. Does much of the new Iraqi army need to have these capabilities before large numbers of US troops can come home? Absolutely.

But in the time that those two battalions backslid to the point where they could no longer operate without at least some help from American forces, how many Level 3 units progressed to Level 2? How many Level 4 units, which are basically raw recruits, completed their basic training and joined forces in the field as Level 3 units? This would be nice to know and would tell us a lot more about the state of the Iraqi army than the number of Iraqi units able to go off on their own.

This Iraqi divisional HQ taking over command of Iraqi units in the field is significant because it represents the sort of thing that sets Level 1 units apart from Level 2 units as generally a lot of an army's support is organized at the divisional level. Another important story is the opening of a small arms ammunition depot. This sort of upper-level command organization and basic infrastructure needs to be in place before many Iraqi units will be able to reach Level 1. While these stories aren't terribly exciting and certainly won't make the front pages, they are exactly the sort of slow and methodical progress that will be required to get more of the Iraqi army to where it needs to be.

One thing they all seem to agree on however, is that Jewish babies are fair game since "all Israeli civilians are military in one way or another." Gory attacks on civilians alienate some Jihadis

Part IV: Unwanted Presence
"...Fashion a breastpiece for making decisions, the work of a skilled craftsman. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen..."

Piers Goos was roused from his hungover nap on the train by a voice reading aloud in a foreign language. It was probably English, but Piers didn't pay much attention in English class back in school. Or any class for that matter.

"...It is to be square-a span long and a span wide-and folded double..."

He sent a bleary glance across the aisle. One of the men could have been a Dutchman. He was holding a book with what looked like Jewish writing. Now the other one, he could be a Jew.

Piers didn't know much about Jews except that they drove the Dutch out of the diamond business in Amsterdam until the Nazis shipped them out to the concentration camps. It was also fun at Feyenoord matchs to call the other team Jews and sing songs about gassing them. He knew that made some people upset, but what can they say when everyone in the stands is doing it?

"...Then mount four rows of precious stones on it. In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz and a beryl..."

What's this now? Just as he was about to settle back in and try to doze off again despite the tall guy's droning, the Jew-looking one snuck a quick peek into a box he had been hiding in his coat. The light caught it just right. It was a big emerald. These guys were up to something.

...in the second an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond, in the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst...

That's when Piers came up with the idea of alerting the Boss. Not his official employer which was the Port of Rotterdam, but his more generous, if more demanding patron who had a monopoly of all the smuggling operations out of the port.

...in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. Mount them in gold filigree settings. There are to be twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.

When the two made their way off the train at their station, rather than continuing on to his night shift on the docks, Piers got off as well. He fell into step behind them just out of earshot and dialed a preset number on his Nokia.

The New Yorker: PRINTABLES
An Internet video newscast called the Voice of the Caliphate was broadcast for the first time on Monday, purporting to be a production of al Qaeda and featuring an anchorman who wore a black ski mask and an ammunition belt. . . . A copy of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, was placed by his right hand and a rifle affixed to a tripod was pointed at the camera.
—The Washington Post.

“In Gaza, Jews on the run—see how they squeal. Along the Gulf Coast of the Great Satan, a spectacular storm destroys the City of Homosexuals, New Orleans, and, in infidel-occupied Iraq, a car bomber drives into a supermarket, creating a fireball in the meat section, destroying the entire inventory of pork products. But there was also bad news today: A startling report on new infrared U.S. helicopter capabilities that may affect the way you commute. The Dow dips below nine thousand as traders take short-term profits. And, finally tonight, our Martyr of the Week, someone for whom the phrase ‘pluck out the eyes of the crusader’ is more than just a slogan. In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate, good evening. I’m Zalwar al-Qamush.

“First, a look at the local situation. In Afghanistan, another tremendous victory. We have this live report from our correspondent Anwar bin Haz, in Kandahar. Anwar, salaam."

“Zalwar, those are poppies behind me, as far as the eye can see. Local officials—that is, the ones we have not yet thrown down wells for collaborating with the American wolves—say this year’s crop will be a record, producing literally tons of base material for high-grade heroin."

“Thank you, Anwar bin Haz. In Italy tonight, an exciting plan to blow up the Vatican during Christmas Eve services—after we return."

Ali Dada. Spent his whole life struggling against Zionism and imperialism. Scrimped and saved to send all of us to madrasah and terrorist training camps. Now he’s in his sixties. His arthritis doesn’t allow him to sneak over the border the way he used to, to kidnap American contractors from Halliburton and Kellogg Brown & Root, though he still insists on making the improvised explosive devices himself. That’s why I give him Al Advil, the non-Jewish anti-inflammatory medicine.

“In Ramallah today, a joyous celebration as hundreds of youths urinated on American flags, set tires on fire, and hurled rocks at a passing Icelandic diplomat in honor of Grandmother’s Day.

“And, in Pakistan, yet more rioting to protest the lifting of a popular fatwa. The fatwa, issued last Ramadan by a Karachi imam, promised twice the number of kohl-eyed virgins in Paradise—seventy-two—to anyone who assassinated President Pervez Musharraf for his collaboration with the American crusaders. But last week the imam lifted the fatwa after taking coffee with Karen Hughes, she-devil envoy of the Salivating Hyena Little Bush. Sources tell Voice of the Caliphate that the coffee was laced with a powerful hallucinogenic drug of the type used on soldiers of the true faith by C.I.A. and Mossad interrogators at Abu Ghraib.

“And, from Guantanamo today, still another report that Muslim prisoners there are being subjected to barbaric tortures. The report, due out tomorrow from Martyrs Without Borders, the respected humanitarian agency, says these include being made to listen to ‘Purimspiel’ klezmer music twenty-four hours a day and being forced to watch the Barbra Streisand movie ‘Yentl’ while immersed up to the neck in chicken soup. Several prisoners have reportedly beheaded themselves rather than endure more of these unspeakable horrors.

“Coming up next, medical news: Could living in damp tunnels for long periods of time be affecting your sex life? We’ll have a report from our medical correspondent, deep inside Tora Bora. And a report on farewell videos—is the camera you’re using to record your teen-age suicide bomber’s final goodbye getting the full picture? We’ll have that, and our Martyr of the Week, when we return."

Spending The Tax in The Hague
Let me introduce you to my new dream job:

The headquarters of 2 Dutch ministries in Holland (namely, 'Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment' VROM and 'Ministry of Finance' minfin) have recently decided to buy new coffee machines for their offices. The question was of course, 'the choice' of coffee they should order along with the machines. So they hired 100 clerks with an average yearly salary of € 48000 to 'taste' the different choices of coffee from 9 AM to 1 PM and choose the best one.

"What was your job, you said?"
"- I work for the government"
"So...What do you do?"
"- I drink coffee half of the day and talk about it in the other half"

The costs of this 'coffee test session' are rising up to € 12000 so far, according to Dutch Volkskrant newspaper.
