is sick of Palestinian lies and incompetence. Get a load of this: Egypt's intelligence chief just gave the Palestinians an ultimatum to release Gilad Shalit, the kidnapped Israeli soldier who is being held, or else.
Or else what? Or else the Israelis will come back into the Gaza Strip and systematically eliminate the Hamas leadership.
Essentially, I believe that Egypt now realizes that Hamas is a fully owned subsidiary of Syria's, and therefore of nuclear-wannabe Iran's-and that makes Hamas a threat to be neutralized. Egypt may not like Israel or America much, it's true. It likes the would-be Islamic imperialists in Iran a lot less. The enemy of one's enemy ends up an ally of convenience.
I don't want to make a virtue out of a necessity here, but I am encouraged that Egypt's response is to side with the Israelis against Hamas, just as I was encouraged that the Saudis sided with Israel against Hezbollah. There has been a major earthquake in the Sunni Arab empire, and none of the old rules apply. The Americans and the Iranians are equally responsible. Iran's role in scaring the Sunni sheep is turning out to be unexpectedly useful.
The Palestinians, in allowing Iranian Shiite influence to displace Sunni Arabs, have made yet another mind-boggling strategic misstep. (I know, many of you find the idea shocking). When the Shiites became the primary "owners" of the Palestinian problem, holier than the Pope as it were, Sunni rulers shivered. Now they're starting to work on curtailing the looming ascendancy of a Shiite crescent in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine; one that is likely to render them irrelevant and dead. They will fight this, and the Palestinians will be the same thing they've always been: pawns on someone else's chessboard.
