Basayev Takes Responsibility
Leader Says Rebels Responsible for Siege

Radical Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev purportedly took responsibility Friday for a recent series of terrorist attacks in Russia but put ultimate blame for a school massacre on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a letter posted Friday on the Kavkaz-Center Web site,Basayev said he had sent a letter to Putin proposing "independence (for Chechnya) in exchange for security." It was impossible to confirm whether the letter was genuine, but the Web site is considered a mouthpiece for Basayev and his previous claims of responsibility have appeared there.

He said that if Russia withdrew its troops, Chechnya would neither support nor finance groups fighting Russia, and "we can guarantee that all of Russia's Muslims refrain from armed methods of struggle against the Russian Federation, at least for 10-15 years, on condition that freedom of religion (as is guaranteed in the Russian Federation) be respected.

Basayev said his band was responsible for an August explosion at a bus stop outside Moscow, the near-simultaneous bombings of two planes the same night, a suicide bombing outside a Moscow subway station a week later, and the school hostage-taking that ended in a hail of gunfire and explosions. More than 430 people have been killed in the attacks.

Adalah and Lina Jawabra
From the BBC: W Bank women 'abort bomb mission'

Two Palestinian women alleged to have been planning to blow hemselves up in Tel Aviv have surrendered to the Israeli authorities. Israel says cousins Adalah and Lina Jawabra plotted an attack during this week's Jewish New Year holiday.

Relatives of the women said they both denied involvement but had given themselves up after the Israeli army threatened to destroy their homes. They surrendered at a checkpoint near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

The two young women, both 21 and students at al-Najjah university, were taken into custody on Wednesday. Israeli military sources say they have confessed to plotting the twin attack under the direction of a wanted militant, who was killed by Israeli forces during a raid into Nablus on the same day.

They identified the militant as Hani al-Aqqad of the leftist Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

American Jews and Mr. Arafat
Burt Prelutsky: American Jews and Mr. Arafat

One of the most confounding aspects of the troubles in the Middle East is the way that so many American Jews have spoken up on behalf of the Palestinians. In my own circle, I find I constantly am having to defend Israel's right to defend herself. I suspect it is because Jews are so accustomed to siding with those they perceive to be the underdogs that they, like so many others, have fallen under the spell of the P.L.O.

In the minds of such people, violence is violence. To them, there is no difference between a suicide bomber and an Israeli soldier, no difference between blowing oneself up in order to murder and maim dozens of innocent bystanders and retaliating against terrorism. Cause and effect play no role in their moral judgments. So far as they're concerned, the cold-blooded killer is no worse than the person who executes him.

They argue that the fact that Israel has had to defend herself against acts of aggression and terrorism for over half a century doesn't excuse their building settlements as a buffer against their avowed enemies. In spite of all the wars waged against them, in spite of a world press that maligns them, in spite of Arab children raised on a diet of hate who want nothing more out of life than to kill Israelis, far too many American Jews refuse to acknowledge that Israel has no option but to fight back.

The world gives Yasser Arafat a Nobel Peace Prize, ignoring the fact that while he speaks peace in broken English, he incites blood lust in fluent Arabic. But what else can one reasonably expect from the world? After all, if there's one thing that Israel has learned in its 50-odd years of life is that, in spite of its being the only democracy in the Middle East, where every other country is a moral cesspool dominated by evil dictators, other nations hate it solely because it's Jewish.

In a part of the world where ayatollahs, oil-rich sheiks and petty dictators rule the roost, the United Nations consistently calls Israel on the carpet. The International Red Cross refuses to grant membership to Israel. CNN and the New York Times take turns defending Arafat and the PLO, bemoaning the fate of the poor, poor Palestinians. The fact that the Palestinians have been left to rot in refugee camps by their fellow Muslims for all these years, in spite of Arabs having nothing but real estate and oil money at their disposal, is always besides the point. It's always Israel's problem to find a way to deal with people who have sworn to kill every last one of them. Or perhaps you think it means nothing that the most popular Nintendo game among PLO children offers them the opportunity to assassinate Prime Minister Sharon over and over again.

Don't Let Iran Get the Bomb
From activistchat, 'Little Israel' will not save world from Iran

With verbal tensions rising daily between Iran and Israel, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee head Yuval Steinitz said the West should not expect "little Israel" to take pre-emptive action to save the world from Iranian nuclear weapons.

It is the free world, led by the United States, that must stand behind its pledge not to let Iran get the bomb, Steinitz said.

He warned that Iran aims at becoming a global nuclear power with long-range Shihab missiles that would put Europe and NATO forces in range.

"This is a problem of the leaders of the civilized world. One shouldn't expect little Israel to solve a global problem like this," Steinitz said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.

"The United States itself has said that it won't hesitate to use any means at its disposal to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. If, God forbid, the free world, led by the United States, doesn't stand behind these words, then a dark curtain will descend on the world raising the possibility of nuclear terror against us and Europe and NATO," Steinitz said.

"Iran is a totally irresponsible and unpredictable totalitarian regime that is ready to sacrifice millions of its people for its crazy ideology," Steinitz said.

His comments came after a week of nearly daily warnings by Iran against Israel for staging a pre-emptive strike against its widespread nuclear infrastructure. The rhetoric came amid reports that the IAF and commandos have completed rehearsals for attacking Iranian nuclear sites such as the reactor in Bushehr. The reports said Israel would under no circumstances allow Iran to "go critical."

After taking a back seat in the diplomatic war against Iranian nuclear endeavors, Israel has again become the loudest voice warning that Iran is trying to manufacture nuclear weapons in the guise of peaceful nuclear power industry.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, who is visiting Paris this week, urged France, Germany, and Britain to intensify their pressure on Iran.

The latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on its investigation into Iran's nuclear program is due to be released in the coming weeks. The White House is expecting a strong statement from the IAEA board and sanctions or nuclear weapons inspections may ensue.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, who has issued daily threats against an Israeli strike, said Thursday in Manila that Iran is pushing for a nuclear-free Middle East.

Message of Hate
Abdel Rahman al-Rashed, general manager of Al- Arabiya news channel, writes Innocent Religion Is Now a Message of Hate:

In a different era, we used to consider the extremists, with nationalist or Leftist leanings, a menace and a source of corruption because of their adoption of violence as a means of discourse and their involvement in murder as an easy shortcut to their objectives.

At that time, the mosque used to be a haven, and the voice of religion used to be that of peace and reconciliation. Religious sermons were warm behests for a moral order and an ethical life.

Then came the Neo-Muslims. An innocent and benevolent religion, whose verses prohibit the felling of trees in the absence of urgent necessity, that calls murder the most heinous of crimes, that says explicitly that if you kill one person you have killed humanity as a whole, has been turned into a global message of hate and a universal war cry.

We can't call those who take schoolchildren as hostages our own.

We cannot tolerate in our midst those who abduct journalists, murder civilians, explode buses; we cannot accept them as related to us, whatever the sufferings they claim to justify their criminal deeds. These are the people who have smeared Islam and stained its image.

We cannot clear our names unless we own up to the shameful fact that terrorism has become an Islamic enterprise; an almost exclusive monopoly, implemented by Muslim men and women.

We cannot redeem our extremist youths, who commit all these heinous crimes, without confronting the Sheikhs who thought it ennobling to re-invent themselves as revolutionary ideologues, sending other people's sons and daughters to certain death, while sending their own children to European and American schools and colleges.

Coming Apart
Mansoor Ijaz tells us that Jihad is collapsing. Jihad in Chaos

Osama bin Laden's global vision — of jihadists crawling from the cracks in every enemy state to strike out at infidels with weapons of mass destruction — is drowning in a swamp of confusion among senior jihadists debating who to attack next, how to do it, and for whose benefit. In short, global jihad has turned on itself, and is being destroyed from within — one botched and more wretched attack at a time.

This is largely a function of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes — the men and women of the U.S. armed forces, and their Coalition colleagues — in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Their courage and valor in conflict zones has battered the very thesis — that the enemy is too corrupt of mind, too decadent in spirit, and too weak of body to sustain the battle to victory — on which bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, have sent thousands of "martyrs" to their deaths.

Zawahiri's appearance on al Jazeera this week to once again threaten the U.S. was particularly poignant, since it was the Egyptian physician who, in his infinite wisdom, wrote in 2001 prior to the September 11 attacks that if the "jihadist vanguard" improperly executed its plans to spread Islam's words by force, the movement would become isolated and separated from the Muslim masses. He was right, and is now desperately trying to rekindle the unified spirit al Qaeda had achieved prior to the 9/11 attacks.

Zawahiri went so far, at that time in 2001, to set forth the thesis of "shock-and-awe" terrorism as a way to galvanize the Muslim masses against the infidels and win the hearts and minds of the feeble in the Muslim world. And so it was that he conceived the attacks of September 11. Galvanize he did, but the wrong masses. And now global jihad is showing real signs of coming apart.

Our Friends, the Saudis
Saudis Say Politics, Not Religion, Behind U.S. Move

Government officials were not immediately available over the Muslim weekend to respond to Washington's decision to put Saudi Arabia on a blacklist of countries of "particular concern" in an annual report on Wednesday tracking religious freedom worldwide.

But the move was met with skepticism by many in the kingdom, whose close alliance with the United States has come under increasing strain in the last three years and become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign. "I can't say Saudi Arabia is the freest country. But it is the cradle of Islam. Are they proposing to have churches or synagogues or Buddhist temples here?" said Abdulaziz al-Fayez, a member of Saudi Arabia's consultative Shura Council.

(Umm... yes. That's the whole point of religious freedom. Ed.)

"All Saudis are Muslims and this is a Muslim state."

...

Saudi Arabia's minority Shi'ite Muslims have long complained of second-class treatment in the Sunni-dominated country. Human rights groups also say many of the 6 million expatriate workers are prevented from practicing their religion.

But Fayez said Muslim preachers in the United States were being harassed "under the cover of anti-terrorism measures."

"This is not the ideal state," he said. "But those who come here understand it is a Muslim country. In the privacy of their homes, no one checks what they do."

Dakhil said U.S. criticism of Saudi Arabia and its strong support of Israel showed double standards at work.

"Is it all right for Israel to say their state must be a Jewish state -- and then criticize a Muslim state for being Muslim? That's hypocrisy."

Except that in Israel, there is religious freedom and people can go to synagogue, church, or mosque, you hypocritical twerp.

We Are So Sorry
We should have run this last week, but better late than never

Kamal Nawash, President of Free Muslic Coalition Against Terrorism: We are so Sorry for 9-11

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism. Many Muslims, including religious leaders, and “intellectuals? blamed 9-11 on a Jewish conspiracy and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on 9-11. Yet others blamed 9-11 on an American right wing conspiracy or the U.S. Government which allegedly wanted an excuse to invade Iraq and “steal? Iraqi oil.

After numerous admissions of guilt by Bin Laden and numerous corroborating admissions by captured top level Al-Qaida operatives, we wonder, does the Muslim leadership have the dignity and courage to apologize for 9-11? If not 9-11, will we apologize for the murder of school children in Russia? If not Russia, will we apologize for the train bombings in Madrid, Spain? If not Spain, will we apologize for suicide bombings in buses, restaurants and other public places? If not suicide bombings, will we apologize for the barbaric beheadings of human beings? If not beheadings, will we apologize for the rape and murder of thousands of innocent people in Darfour? If not Darfour, will we apologize for the blowing up of two Russian planes by Muslim women? What will we apologize for? What will it take for Muslims to realize that those who commit mass murder in the name of Islam are not just a few fringe elements? What will it take for Muslims to realize that we are facing a crisis that is more deadly than the Aids epidemic? What will it take for Muslims to realize that there is a large evil movement that is turning what was a peaceful religion into a cult?

Will Muslims wake up before it is too late? Or will we continue blaming the Jews and an imaginary Jewish conspiracy? The blaming of all Muslim problems on Jews is a cancer that is destroying Muslim society from within and it must stop.
