War of the Worlds
Diana West, on Steven Spielberg receiving a knighthood from Jacques Chirac: Memo to Spielberg: We're facing a 'War of the Worlds'

We are experiencing a civilization-wide failure, even three years after 9/11, to define the terrorism born of Islam's core medieval precepts: violent jihad and dehumanizing dhimmitude. We see the same kind of terrorism in Russia that we see in Israel, Sudan and Iraq. We've seen it in Spain and we've seen in it Bali, and we've certainly seen it in the United States. We see it, but maybe we don't believe it -- a failure that could ultimately be our undoing.

The war we wage, the United States and its coalition of friends, is not a war on generic "terrorism," but on Islamic jihad -- the spread of Islam by violent means. We wage it not against generic "terrorists," but against Islamic jihadists who dream of death and destruction, not to mention a caliphate, in their religion's name.

In our religion's name -- the postmodern "religion" of tolerance the pluralistic West publicly enforces and enshrines -- we torture ourselves over whether jihadists are just a minuscule minority of "extremists." We nudge along a lagging conviction that terrorists who maim and kill in the name of Allah constitute some far-out sect that will some day be denounced, ostracized and neutralized by a robust Muslim mainstream. Meanwhile, when The New York Times' David Brooks identifies the source of global terrorism as a "death cult ... at the fringes of the Islamic world," I suppose we give two cheers for a real mouthful in a newspaper that routinely mumbles over the Muslim identity of jihadists the world over. (In reporting on the Beslan horror, the newspaper changed the surviving terrorist's widely quoted words, "By Allah, I didn't shoot," to "By God, I didn't shoot" -- as noted by blogger Dawn Patrol). But we must also wonder how fringy the Islamic "death cult" can be given the doctrinal primacy of jihad and dhimmitude in the Muslim world.

Root Causes? I Can Think of One
The international war on terror will prove a long drawn-out battle as militants reorganize themselves into smaller groups, Asian defense experts said Monday.

"Al Qaeda has broken its organization into smaller units of elements, making a network in third world nations," Wan Usman, head of strategic studies at the University of Jakarta in Indonesia told a seminar on the changing global security environment.

The network had penetrated institutions, and managed to fan destructive radical anti-Western teachings in some Muslim schools in the region, he said.

He said a sense of unfairness was the force that motivated terrorists, who seek to destroy the modern globalized system they regard as unfair.

"The fight against terrorism can only succeed when the ideology upon which it is based is shown to be wrong," he added. Maj. Gen. Zhu Sheng Hu, a Chinese expert and former director of the Institute for Strategic Studies at the University of Beijing, called for an increased role for the United Nations in the fight against terror.

"Double standards in fighting terrorism will not work," he said. "The focus should be on removing the root causes of terrorism."

Experts Say Terrorists Regroup, See Lengthy War

A sense of unfairness? Root causes of terrorism? Here's a root cause of terrorism: Jihad! It's tiresome that I have to explain this over and over.

Guys in Pajamas
From Opinion Journal, I'd Rather Be Blogging

CBS stonewalls as "guys in pajamas" uncover a fraud.

A watershed media moment occurred Friday on Fox News Channel, when Jonathan Klein, a former executive vice president of CBS News who oversaw "60 Minutes," debated Stephen Hayes, a writer for The Weekly Standard, on the documents CBS used to raise questions about George W. Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard service.
Mr. Klein dismissed the bloggers who are raising questions about the authenticity of the memos: "You couldn't have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of check and balances [at '60 Minutes'] and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing."

He will regret that snide disparagement of the bloggers, many of whom are skilled lawyers or have backgrounds in military intelligence or typeface design. A growing number of design and document experts say they are certain or almost certain the memos on which CBS relied are forgeries.

Mr. Klein didn't directly address the mounting objections to CBS's story. He fell back on what high school debaters call the appeal to authority, implying that the reputation of "60 Minutes" should be enough to dissolve doubts without the network sharing its methods with other journalists and experts. He told Fox's Tony Snow that the "60 Minutes" team is "the most careful news organization, certainly on television." He said that Mary Mapes, the producer of the story, was "a crack journalist" who had broken the Abu Ghraib prison abuse story.
