Did you know that al-Qaeda has "activists"? I guess they're in charge of organizing peace rallies and running soup kitchens for the homeless.
An American thought to be an al-Qaida activist appeared in a videotape with the terror group's deputy leader Saturday and called on his countrymen to convert to Islam and for U.S. soldiers to switch sides in the Iraq and Afghan wars.

Sophisticated IED explodes in Metra train station
Oh, boy. I'm sure it was a Jewish bomb. There's almost no news about this-Google News has only 8 articles, even though it happened yesterday. The damn thing had a timer, too, and was left in the trash can of a station with no security cameras. I don't understand why there is any mass transit facility without security cameras, in this day and age.

A test run for a larger future attack, or a lone incompetent Muslim? Bad sign: Al Qaeda (in the guise of Adam Gadahn) is inviting us to convert to Islam again, a sure prelude to future attacks.
The maker of a sophisticated pipe bomb that exploded in a trash receptacle inside the Hinsdale Metra station early Friday still was at large late in the day, police said.

Nobody was injured in the 6:50 a.m. blast inside the ticket building, authorities said.

A man witnesses had pointed to as possibly being involved was released after a consensual search of his home turned up nothing, Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom said. The man had been seen near the receptacle and was apprehended at Union Station about an hour and a half later.

Bloom said the department has not ruled that man, or anyone else, out but said police don't have a good description of who may have left the bomb. There are no security cameras at the station, and nobody saw anyone place the bomb, he said.

U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent Thomas Ahern said authorities do not believe the incident was terrorist-related, although they do not have a motive yet. He said the device was "improvised" but not a manufactured bomb. Its remnants will be sent to a Maryland laboratory for examination, Ahern said.

The device was more elaborate than some--it had a timer that allowed a delayed detonation, authorities said.

"We're a little concerned, because it was a somewhat sophisticated device," Bloom said, referring to the timer. "And it was just inside the door" of the station, he said.

The new Art of War
Now that we're using our banking system to systematically punish and isolate North Korea, a highly effective form of network warfare has been born, to little accolade. We're using an asset we've always had; it plays to our strengths, and it hurts our enemies at their weakest point with surgical precision and devastating results.

It's a game only established countries can play, and rogue regimes can't keep up or respond in kind. If the hyperventilating words of Kim Jong Il's unofficial spokesman (via Korea Liberator) are anything to go by, the North Koreans are very threatened indeed by this turn of events. They are coming extremely close to a declaration of overt war; the linked article suggests not-so-obliquely that the North Koreans are prepared to detonate nukes in the atmosphere over our major cities to trigger an EMP pulse. This is heating up extremely fast, after years of not much happening in North Korea. Their ability to carry out their threats is very much in question, but our ability to make them suffer is in no doubt-their screeching threats in response directly confirm it.

The Bush administration has them by the balls, and is squeezing-hard. This is an unheralded and underappreciated innovation in unconvential warfare-a game we are showing we can ably play. We have the world's most desirable markets, and we can coerce the financial institutions of other countries into doing our bidding.

The successes of missile defense, although significant, pale next to this kind of power. This is a powerful form of shunning: if you do not refuse North Korea's business, the entire American financial system will exclude you. Few can refuse when Uncle Sam comes a-knocking. Next on the coercion list: Russian banks. We are not yet finished escalating the pressure on North Korea, and the precedent will serve us well in containing Iran. Russia is an energy rich state, and has forms of pressure of its own that it can bring to bear; if we can make their banks do our bidding, then we are in a very good position indeed with respect to the upcoming sanction regime against Iran.

Squeeze harder, Mr. President.

Constitutional Government Under Assault
I've been watching news of this interstate compact to gut the Constitution's Electoral College provision without actually amending the Constitution. Watching it with what was, at first, just slight wariness, and eventually, a growing sense of disgust. Leave well enough alone! It's not so much the principle of ditching the Electoral College that bothers me (the Electoral College does have plenty to recommend it)-what really bothers me is this end-run by a few States around the Constitutional Amendment process. They don't have the right to do this; it's a textbook subversive conspiracy by the few against the many. The Constitution is not something you cleverly hack, it's a contract between the people and the Federal government, and simultaneously one between the State governments and the Federal government. Now a group of States are seeking to disenfranchise their own voters, and those from other states, because of a simplistic understanding that the Electoral College "isn't fair". I don't like this one bit.

This is going to be a big test for Governor Schwarzenegger. Governor, I urge you to veto it. It's a hare-brained scheme that will set a terrible precedent.
California lawmakers sent Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill Wednesday that would make California the first state to move away from the Electoral College and join a movement to elect the president by popular vote.

The bill would allow all California’s electoral votes to go toward the candidate who receives the most votes nationwide - not in California - according to The Los Angeles Times. Proponents of the bill say if enough states pass a similar bill, it will force candidates to campaign in every state, not just “battleground” states like Florida and Ohio.

Five other states, New York, Illinois, Colorado, Louisiana, and Missouri, are considering similar pieces of legislation. California’s bill, if signed by the governor, will not take effect until a majority of Electoral College votes, a minimum of 11 states, depending on population, have enacted similar legislation

Japan's Next Prime Minister: Shinzo Abe?
Much like Koizumi, Abe is a strong nationalist with clear vision who wants his country to take a leading role in the world, and become a self-sufficient military power capable of deterring Russian and Chinese aggression on its own. I wish him the best. It's time to get over Japan's Imperial follies and let it assume a rightful place among the nations (and in the UN Security Council).
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe has formally announced his candidacy to succeed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Mr Abe pledged a robust foreign policy and restated his aim of holding a referendum on constitutional revision.

Mr Abe, 51, is the clear front-runner to win the 20 September contest to become president of the ruling party.

The holder of this post is almost certain to be made prime minister when Mr Koizumi steps down on 30 September.

Mr Abe made his announcement at a news conference in Hiroshima.

"I have decided to run as a candidate to respond to and accept the warm and strong hopes of many Japanese people," he said.

Mr Abe is not expected to make major changes in policy if he becomes prime minister.

Like Mr Koizumi, he favours strengthening an alliance with the United States, and taking a tough stand against North Korea.

In fact he is seen as even more hawkish than the current prime minister on some foreign policy issues, raising fears that Japan's relations with China and South Korea - which have deteriorated markedly under Mr Koizumi - could worsen still further.

"Japan will follow a foreign policy that makes firm demands based on national interests," Mr Abe said in his speech.

He was keen to improve ties with China and South Korea, he said, but stressed that such a step required "efforts from each country".

He also spoke of the need to revise Japan's pacifist constitution, which bans the use of military force. "We need a new constitution that fits better for how Japan should be in the 21st century," he said.
