Squirting milk in Turkey
ISTANBUL, Turkey - Ilker Yilmaz might just hold one of the world's most bizarre world records. The Turkish construction worker on Wednesday poured milk into his hand, loudly snorted it up his nose and squirted it 9.2 feet out of his left eye in what he hopes will be recognized as a new world record.

"I'm happy and proud that I can get Turkey in the record book even if it's for milk squirting," said the 28-year-old. He says he is among only a handful of people around the world who can perform the feat because of an anomaly in his tear gland.

The Web site for Guinness World Records says Mike Moraal of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, set the existing record, of 8.745 feet in France in 2001.

Yilmaz said he has known for years that he could squirt liquids out of his eye, but only three years ago found out that there was a record for squirting milk.

Mahir Kendusim, an Istanbul-based eye doctor, said a cavity links the lower eyelid to the nasal cavity, but added that he has never heard of anyone who was able to carry out a feat such as Yilmaz's.

Two years ago, Yilmaz said he broke an earlier record, but Guinness did not recognize it because the witnesses present did not fulfill its guidelines.

On Wednesday, an imam, or Muslim prayer leader, was among witnesses watching as Yilmaz sucked in the milk, held back his left eyelid with his finger and squirted away. Yilmaz succeeded on his third attempt. The record attempt was sponsored by Kay Sut, a Turkish milk company.

Dutch Muslims and human rights activists expressed their deep disgust and outrage at a film broadcast on national television tarnishing Islam’s stance on women’s rights, saying they found the hatred-inciting 11-minute clip “extremely insulting?.

They hit out at the film’s scriptwriter right-wing anti-Islam MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, pointing out that she depended on stereotypes and hoary-old traditions that had nothing to do with Islam.

Ayyoub Mohammad Ajoeb of the Muslim Information Center said the film “is yet another attempt at provocation by Hirsi Ali?.

Submission, the name of the English-language film broadcast Sunday night, August 29, tells the fictional story of a young Muslim woman forced into an arranged marriage with a man who beats her.

She is ordered to keep silent about being raped by her uncle to protect his honor. She is later punished for having an adulterous relationship with a man she falls in love with at a market.

The almost naked body of the actress on which Hirsi Ali painted verses from the Noble Qur’an, is shown with inflamed lacerations to the sound of a cracking whip.

Hirsi arrived in Holland as a penniless refugee in 1992 after sneaking across the German border, escaping an arranged marriage as she claimed.

She did not speak a word of Dutch. Finding jobs as a cleaner, she went on to study political science at Leiden University.

She was catapulted into the limelight for her incessant verbal assault against Islam, making use of the anti-Muslim seismic waves stirred by the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington. She prefers to call herself an “ex-Muslim?.

In an interview with the Dutch daily Trouw on January 25 last year, Hirsi shocked as many as one million Muslims living in the Netherlands by branding Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) with some abhorrent, repugnant descriptions, stirring up feelings of anger and antagonism towards her.

Having no inkling about Islam or Shari'ah (Islamic law) as it appears in her curriculum vitae, Ayaan said the Prophet (PBUH) was a “despotic, narrow-minded and violent? man, who killed whoever stood in his way.

Muslim organizations, as well as the Dutch Liberal Party (VVD), which has some 28 seats in the parliament, had called for stripping Hirsi of her parliamentary membership and to pressure her into backtracking on her degrading remarks.

Researchers specialized in Islamic studies in the Netherlands assert that Ayaan has a superficial knowledge about Islam, pointing out that she depended on stereotypes and old clichés, which were not based on any scientific or epistemological evidence.

Amr Riyad, an Egyptian researcher at Leiden University, said Ayaan is ignorant about the fact that there is a whole sura (chapter) in the Glorious Qur’an entitled Al-Nissa (women), which spelled out women’s rights enshrined by Islam some 14 centuries ago, when the West was viewing women as a devil and animal incarnate.

“Before Islam, women were buried alive,? Riyad said. “But with the advent of Islam, women had been saved by prohibiting the custom of killing baby girls.?

Yeah, women have been saved by Islam. Totally. Tell that to the honour crime victims.

Dress codes
Iran's moral crackdown has widened its focus from stylishly dressed women to curvaceous shop-window mannequins, a newspaper has reported.

Morals police have banned shopkeepers from showing unveiled dummies and lingerie in their windows.

And men were now forbidden to sell women's underwear, Sharq newspaper said on Tuesday.

"Using unveiled mannequins that reveal their bodies' curves is banned," it quoted part of a new police manual as saying.

Shops breaking the rules risk closure and losing their trading licences.

Lawmakers are debating an Iranian dress code, advocated last month by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who called for a national costume that avoided European models.

"A national costume will be designed for men and women based on Islamic and national criteria," conservative deputy Fatemeh Alia was quoted as saying in the Siyasat-e Rouz daily.

Keep your dog happy
Asked which candidate they'd trust to walk Fido, dog owners favored Mr. Bush 51% to 37%. Asked which candidate would be better for their pooch's happiness, 44% favored Mr. Bush over 37% for Mr. Kerry. But perhaps more troublesome for the Democrat is what happened when participants were asked which dog breed they most closely associated with each candidate. For Mr. Bush, two breeds tied at 20% each: the Labrador retriever, the most popular family dog in America, and the Rottweiler, often used as a guard dog. As for Mr. Kerry, 15% associated him with Labs--but 14% picked a poodle (the poll didn't specify a French poodle).

A reminder
The militant Islamic group Hamas claimed the attack Tuesday in the desert city of Beersheba, when two bombers from the West Bank city of Hebron blew themselves up seconds apart in two buses. Raanan Gissin, a senior aide to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, pointed to neighboring Syria on Wednesday, saying Hamas leaders are permitted to work out of the Syrian capital.

During four years of Palestinian-Israeli violence, 490 people have been killed in 114 Palestinian suicide bombings. Here's a look at some of the deadliest attacks:

Jan. 29: A bus on Jerusalem's Gaza Street, killing 11 people.

Oct. 4, 2003: A seaside restaurant in Haifa, killing at least 19.

Sept. 9, 2003: Cafe Hillel in Jerusalem, killing seven.

Sept. 9, 2003: A bus stop near an army base outside Tel Aviv, killing eight Israeli soldiers.

Aug. 19, 2003: A bus in Jerusalem, killing 23.

June 11, 2003: A bus on Jerusalem's central Jaffa Street, killing 17.

May 18, 2003: A bus at Jerusalem's French Hill neighborhood, killing seven.

Nov. 21, 2002: A bus in Jerusalem, killing 11.

Oct. 21, 2002: A bus at the Karkur Junction in northern Israel, killing 14.

Aug. 4, 2002: A bus at the Meron Junction in northern Israel, killing eight.

June 19, 2002: French Hill intersection in Jerusalem, killing seven.

June 18, 2002: Patt Junction in southern Jerusalem, killing 19.

June 5, 2002: Bus near Megiddo Junction in northern Israel, killing 17.

May 7, 2002: A pool hall in the Tel Aviv suburb of Rishon Letzion, killing 15.

April 10, 2002: A bus in Haifa, killing eight.

March 31, 2002: A restaurant in Haifa, killing 15.

March 27, 2002: A hotel dining room during a ritual Seder meal at the start of Passover in the city of Netanya, killing 29.

March 20, 2002: A bus near village of Kfar Musmus, killing seven.

March 9, 2002: Jerusalem's Moment Cafe, killing 11.

March 2, 2002: Jerusalem's Ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood, killing 11.

Dec. 2, 2001: A bus in the coastal city of Haifa, killing 15.

Aug. 9, 2001: Sbarro pizzeria in Jerusalem, killing 15.

June 1, 2001: The entrance of the Dolphinarium seaside disco in Tel Aviv, killing 21, mostly teenagers.

And a cheery little note about Tuesday's attack:

A 3-year-old boy was among the victims. More than 80 people were wounded, including 19 school-age children.

In Gaza, thousands of Hamas supporters celebrated in the streets, with Rantisi's widow, Rasha, calling the attack "heroic" and saying her husband's soul was "happy in heaven." She threw candies to the cheering crowd around her house.

A blogging election
Glenn Reynolds writes in WSJ:

"It's been apparent for quite a while that Mr. Kerry's Vietnam record would be a centerpiece of his campaign, and it's also been apparent that he has stretched the truth more than a little where parts of it were concerned. In a Boston Herald piece inspired by "Apocalypse Now," Mr. Kerry wrote: "On more than one occasion, I, like Martin Sheen in 'Apocalypse Now,' took my patrol boat into Cambodia.

"In fact, I remember spending Christmas Day of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese Allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real." Mr. Kerry made similar claims on the Senate floor in 1986, adding that the memory was "seared -- seared -- in me." He also peddled variations on this story during press interviews over the years.

But the story isn't true. And the Kerry campaign eventually admitted that, but only after prodding from the media. Not from the newspapers and TV networks -- which studiously ignored the story for nearly two weeks -- but from blogs and talk radio. Bloggers researched the story on Google, on Factiva and Lexis, and in libraries. Talk-radio hosts, including some like Neal Boortz and Hugh Hewitt who are bloggers themselves, retailed the findings to the wider world. Eventually the Kerry campaign was forced to respond, which then forced the New York Times and the LA Times, grudgingly, to admit that the story existed and to start their own coverage."
