More Americans feel positively toward Canada and Britain than they do toward other major European countries, Japan, Russia and China, according to a recent Harris Interactive poll.

The countries in the poll were judged on systems of government, quality of life, present governments, economies, the environment and health-care systems.

More than three-quarters (77%) of Americans polled said they feel "very positively" about the U.S. constitution and system of government as well as its quality of life. Fifty-four percent said they feel very positively toward Canada's quality of life and 45% expressed approval for Great Britain's quality of life.

The results of this new survey can be compared to the replies given by Europeans in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain in another survey conducted in June by HI Europe, Harris Interactive's European subsidiary.

In that poll, 19% of Europeans said they feel very positively about the U.S. constitution and system of government and 24% are positive about U.S. quality of life. Only 7% of Europeans are very positive about the present U.S. government.

Few Americans feel very positively about the environment in any of the countries: the highest positive ratings went to the U.S. (51%) and Canada (47%).

Of the six criteria included in a recent Harris Interactive poll, health care is the only category where more Americans rate another country higher than their own; less than 50% of respondents rate the U.S. very positively -- 49% rated Canada's health system favorably.

Reacting to the news that their country will now have access to Al Jazeera, an overwhelming 96% of Canadians polled agreed that "what we need in this country is another flagrantly anti-Semitic, anti-Israeli and anti-American network."

Bernadette Buskirk, a graphic artist in Ottawa, told the Angus Reid group that she hoped "we would get to see more beheadings on Al Jazeera than we have on the CBC. Also, I'd like to see the Protocols of the Elders of Zion taken a little more seriously. I mean, let's face it. The CBC does its best to show us how the Jews run the world, but on its own it can't do enough."

In the same poll, 98% of Canadians said they were "relieved and happy" that the CRTC had yet to grant a broadcast licence to FOX NEWS. "We don't want those kinds of biases in this country," said McFraser. "We might start thinking Islamic terror isn't caused by those whores-of-Zion Americans, and is, rather, caused by Islamofascists. And who would want their children to learn that?"

The End of the Affair
Deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein would be grumbling in his prison cell if he knew.

Al-Mutanabi Street, the book-lined alley whose spirit he tried for decades to crush, again is filled with customers, from communists to clerics, who once would have faced jail for reading some of the material for sale.

One man browsing the stalls was Sami al-Mutairy, a one-eyed poet and playwright who wrote "The Tribes of Fear," a thinly veiled attack on Saddam's attempts to sow ethnic disunity. He was imprisoned and tortured by the Ba'ath Party's secret police.

"They used a ring to grind out my eye," he said. "They said I was a communist. Well, that was true enough -- I am a Trotskyite. But I don't think the punishment fit the crime."

Abdul Rasool Ali, a member of the once-persecuted Shi'ite religious majority, was arrested three times, accused of selling texts espousing his creed. After a confession obtained under torture, he was jailed for eight years. But he considers that he escaped lightly in comparison with his brothers. One was executed; the other disappeared.

"Before, we had to be very careful what we sold," Mr. Ali said. "But now look. I have everything in open view."

The atmosphere of repression may have vanished, but Al-Mutanabi Street is in dire need of new material if it hopes to return to its heyday of the mid-20th century.

Most of the books for sale were published no later than the 1960s, donated to the vendors by rich Iraqis who emptied their libraries before fleeing the country.

Perhaps the most unsuccessful book on display was "Konec Dobrodruzstvi," a Czech translation of Graham Greene's "The End of the Affair."

"I've been trying to get rid of that for 14 years," said vendor George Sabah. "No one seems to want it."

Iraq's intellectuals are starting to write again, but they face a new threat from extremists fighting U.S. troops and Iraq's interim government. These insurgents also are targeting academics and, according to the Iraqi Union of University Lecturers, have killed more than 250 since Saddam's fall.
