Here's a wonderful little travelogue about Albania, The untraveled path
. A few things I didn't know: Albanians are the most ancient race in southeastern Europe, the Albanian language is the only surviving Thraco-Illyrian language, and Albanians claim that the entire Greek mythology was borrowed from the Illyrians. Another thing I didn't know: Albania was the only Nazi-occupied country where there were more Jews at the end of WWII than at the beginning. Not one Jew was killed, and many refugees were taken in from bordering states.
And a funny little note: "shaking one's head from side to side means 'yes' whereas sticking one's chin up is the way to say 'no.'" Greeks do the same thing :-)
