The world according to Neturei Karta
Electronic Intifada and a San Francisco Bay area weekly will be featuring Orthodox Jews Against Zionism, an interview with Rabbi Dovid Weiss of Neturei Karta, so I think it's a good opportunity for a discussion on this group since many people who are non-Jewish and are not familiar with them think of the NK simply as "Orthodox Jews".

Two things stood out for me in this article: the first was the glaring absence of any mention of the Holocaust and the thousands of years of persecution and pogroms the Jewish people have endured. If we're to believe the Neturei Karta, Jews lived in peace and harmony in the world until Israel was created. Second, from a personal viewpoint, if I think a certain country is an abomination and against God's will, I wouldn't live there so I would like to know how any NK members who live in Israel justify their choice.

Inconvenient Blair
David Horovitz (whose book "Still Life With Bombers" is a must-read) wrote an excellent editorial about Tony Blair: A leader who 'gets it,' and gets castigated for it. The main reason Blair's critics deride him is because he actually thinks Bush is right.
For large swathes of the British demographic - notably a goodly proportion of academia, the teaching profession, the church, the trade unions and the media - Bush is a bone-headed, leaden-footed warmonger, stirring up anti-Western aggression by throwing unthinking force at Islamic extremism. And Blair is his earnest little helper. Even the July 7 bombings last year in London - a home-hatched quadruple suicide bombing with no remotely conceivable purported legitimacy - left much of elite British public opinion disinclined to acknowledge that the world is in the throes of a struggle between those who value life and those who have been wooed into an Islamic death cult.

For many of these elites, the world would just be a better, safer place if Israel would only disappear. The Zionist enterprise is regarded as an incongruous colonial growth, an upstart irritant to its Muslim neighbors whose removal would immediately sate Islamic aggression and alleviate the core grievance deemed to be fuelling global Islamic terrorism.

Blair, inconveniently, begs to differ.

Who controls the media in Lebanon?
Read this analysis by Tom Gross on the international media’s coverage of the war between Israel and Hezbollah: The media war against Israel.
“CNN senior international correspondent” Nic Robertson admitted that his anti-Israel report from Beirut on July 18 about civilian casualties in Lebanon, was stage-managed from start to finish by Hizbullah. He revealed that his story was heavily influenced by Hizbullah’s “press officer” and that Hizbullah have “very, very sophisticated and slick media operations.”

When pressed a few days later about his reporting on the CNN program “Reliable Sources,” Robertson acknowledged that Hizbullah militants had instructed the CNN camera team where and what to film. Hizbullah “had control of the situation,” Robertson said. “They designated the places that we went to, and we certainly didn’t have time to go into the houses or lift up the rubble to see what was underneath.”

Robertson added that Hizbullah has “very, very good control over its areas in the south of Beirut. They deny journalists access into those areas. You don’t get in there without their permission. We didn’t have enough time to see if perhaps there was somebody there who was, you know, a taxi driver by day, and a Hizbullah fighter by night.”

Yet “Reliable Sources,” presented by Washington Post writer Howard Kurtz, is broadcast only on the American version of CNN. So CNN International viewers around the world will not have had the opportunity to learn from CNN’s “Senior international correspondent” that the pictures they saw from Beirut were carefully selected for them by Hizbullah.

Another journalist let the cat out of the bag last week. Writing on his blog while reporting from southern Lebanon, Time magazine contributor Christopher Allbritton, casually mentioned in the middle of a posting: “To the south, along the curve of the coast, Hezbollah is launching Katyushas, but I’m loathe to say too much about them. The Party of God has a copy of every journalist’s passport, and they’ve already hassled a number of us and threatened one.”

Ahmy and Kimmy sitting in a tree
As Ahmadinejad is calling for Israel's destruction as a solution to the world's problems, Iran is also closely working with N.Korea to develop long-range ballistic missiles. I'm sure everyone will be outraged over this. If they notice, that is.
Christopher Hill, the top U.S. envoy to talks on the North's nuclear programme, said last month one or more Iranians watched the North's missile launch, deepening concerns about the ties between two countries with troubling nuclear capabilities.

The Taepodong-2 is the product of joint efforts with Tehran, coinciding with Iran's development of the Shehab-5 and 6 missiles, the report said. "It is highly possible that design and technology from China, which has an arms trade with Iran, were used."

The Taepodong-2's failure was probably because its first-stage booster rocket did not separate, the report said, the latest in a series of problems with the missile, including an explosion during an engine test in 2002.

It is Tisha b'Av and the sirens are wailing
A very moving post from Leah at The Techno-geek Diaries: Under Fire, part 31.
Today is a day of fasting, prayer, and sorrow in the Jewish calendar. Many terrible disasters have befallen us on this day: the destruction of the First Temple and the Babylonian exile; the destruction of the Second Temple; the expulsion from Spain during the Inquisition; Kristalnacht; the list goes on and on. Today the sirens are wailing as, once again, an enemy seeks to destroy us.
Jauhara expressed beautifully what many of us feel about our Israeli brothers and sisters today: I grieve with you, so that I may one day rejoice with you, too.

Trying to off Castro
A popular joke in Cuba tells of Castro being given a present of a Galapagos turtle. Castro declines it after he learns that it is likely to live only 100 years. "That's the problem with pets," he says. "You get attached to them and then they die on you". Fabian Escalante was head of the Cuban secret service and in an upcoming book and documentary he estimates there were 638 attempts to kill Fidel. This one sounds a little familiar:
On one occasion, a former lover was recruited to kill him, according to Peter Moore, producer of the new film. The woman was given poison pills by the CIA, and she hid them in her cold cream jar. But the pills melted and she decided that, all things considered, putting cold cream in Castro's mouth while he slept was a bad idea. According to this woman, Castro had already guessed that she was aiming to kill him and he duly offered her his own pistol. "I can't do it, Fidel," she told him.
