Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo
I don't know if you remember Bosko Brkic and Admira Ismic, the two lovers who were killed by snipers while trying to cross a bridge in Sarajevo. She was a Bosnian Muslim and he was a Bosnian Serb and their love and death represented everything that was senseless about the Bosnian war.

The image of them lying dead for days while no one dared remove the bodies, has haunted me all these years. Since we've been talking about the Bosnia war lately, it seemed like a proper time to remember them: Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo

'I touched the democracy'
As democracy takes root around the world—often with America’s encouragement—more women are joining the political process. So it’s striking how low their participation rates are here at home. When nations were ranked for women’s involvement in national legislatures and governments, the U.S. was 61st. Rwanda was first, followed by Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Iraq, with its new national assembly, ranked 15th. Afghanistan is still unranked, but its new constitution guarantees women 25% of the seats in the lower house and 17% of the seats in the upper house of parliament. (Of course, in a few countries—including Kuwait and Saudi Arabia—women still can’t even vote or hold office.)

One Religion, One People
This is all sadly familiar: A top official of the Russian Orthodox Church, conveniently mixing the concepts of nationalism and religion, said Russia cannot be considered multinational since the majority of Russians are Orthodox. The Greek Orthodox Church also believes that being Orthodox is "part of being Greek."

Also, check out what's for sale at the Russian Parliament's bookstore.

A Grisly Practice
I was looking through a photograph exhibit, An Argentine slum through children's eyes, and I came upon this photograph:
Eugenio was forced to exhume the remains of his mother two years after her death because he couldn't pay rent on her grave - rent which, in Argentina, becomes payable on the grave a certain number of years after death.

He undertook the grisly task of digging up her bones and washing them before placing them in a common grave, and documented the whole event in pictures. Cemeteries do provide both services in Argentina, but at a price.
Exhuming the dead is done in Greece too, mostly in the cities, not because of poverty but because there's a shortage of space in the cemeteries. After a person is buried for three years, the bones are dug up, washed, and placed in the "osteofylakio", a common area where the bones of the dead are stored. The family and a priest attend the exhumation.

I was present at the exhumation of a person very dear to me. It was a shocking and traumatic experience that I've never forgotten and I can't bear to imagine what Eugenio was going through having to do this himself. I pray and hope that my father will never have to be exhumed, he's buried next to my grandmother in our family grave, in an old, tiny cemetery overlooking the Ionian sea.

A Matter of Faith
... I remember when I was about 7 and a neighborhood kid told me I was going to go to hell because I was Jewish and didn’t believe in Jesus, or because the Jews killed Jesus, or something. I got freaked out and went home crying. My dad inquired what was wrong, and I told him. He replied, “Well, at least you’ll be with the family."
