Rocking The Vote
One of Iran's struggling presidential candidates has come up with a novel way to get votes: buy them - openly.

Mehdi Karoubi, a mid-ranking cleric and political moderate, has promised that if elected he will start paying everyone over the age of 18 the sum of 500000 rials (R377) [almost US$ 70] every month - no questions asked.

"Stride towards a comfortable and free life with the 500000 programme," Karoubi's campaign literature says.

He is also promising free consultations with doctors, all without cutting into the already huge state subsidies on fuel, bread and rice.

Karoubi may be a man of the cloth but there are doubts over his ability to use a calculator.

The plan could spell disaster for the Iranian economy, as the handouts would cost the state around $28 billion over one year - roughly the same amount of Iran's hard currency fund for surplus oil revenue.

The word inflation also springs to mind.

Karoubi, however, insists the plan has been scrutinised by economists and that it all adds up - and indeed that it represents the wish of Iran's revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini for Iran's oil money to go straight into the public's pocket.

"I am sorry that for all these years the Iranian people have been deprived of this right," Karoubi has told his supporters.

"I have never lied to you and I will never lie."

But the dramatic campaign pledge does not appear to be working, with Karoubi, 68, trailing in the polls with likely support of around 10 percent of the Islamic republic's electorate.

It has also sparked a local joke: "Can you lend me 500000 rials? I'll pay you back when Karoubi starts paying!"

Argumentum ad Nazium
Dick Durbin's idiotic remarks brought to mind this wonderful little post I ran across the other day, the zombie of Hitler's corpse is eating people's brains. Via Eric the Unread.
Whenever someone makes a Hitler or Nazi comparison, be it "Bush=Hitler" or "Hillary=Hitler" or "Whomever=Hitler" or a questionable Holocaust comparison, don't just accept it or shrug and walk away. Pin down the person making the analogy. Ask him what, specifically, he means! Make him justify the analogy with history, facts, and logic. Ask him specifically what similarities and what historical events lead him to make that analogy. At least 95% of the time, you'll get either no answer (and you'll hopefully make the idiot making the analogy very uncomfortable); a meaningless "because X is as bad as Hitler," "because X got us in a war," or "X is like the Holocaust because lots of people are being killed" kind of an answer or an obviously fallacious answer like Charlie Rangel's or Abe Foxman's. The other 5% of the time (or usually way less), you may get something as thoughtful as David Neiwart's essays (not as long, of course). If interviewers who encounter such analogies from politicians they're interviewing would consistently, calmly, and insistently ask followup questions demanding justification and pointedly asking why the politician being interviewed chose the Hitler/Nazi analogy rather than another, a lot of this silliness would disappear. It wouldn't stop the bad analogies in political speeches, but it might make TV and radio political punditry just a little less annoying by making politicians acutely aware that they will be called on it when they use Nazi comparisons. At the very least, it would make politicians making such overheated analogies squirm on the air a bit, and that's always a good thing. In fact, maybe we could even have pundits invoke Godwin's Law.
I love perspective.

Aiding the Enemy
I know there are Jewish people who are anti-Zionist, they don't believe Israel has a right to exist (I don't understand it, but I know it). Moishe Arye Friedman, chief rabbi for hundreds of anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews in Vienna, even believes that Zionist Jews share the blame for the Holocaust, he sees it as a punishment for straying from God. I'd lump him with the other extremists and not care beyond that but there's something that puzzles me: why would a Jew want to be friends with neo-Nazis? Does he think he would be exempt from their hatred for Jews? Austrian rabbi enlists far right

Anti-Semitism Rising
This last week, 130 tombstones were knocked down at the Jewish Cemetery in Budapest and another 86 tombstones desecrated in a Jewish cemetery in London, the third desecration of a Jewish cemetery in Britain this year.
Earlier this month, staff at a Jewish cemetery in Manchester, northern England, discovered that at least 96 graves had been toppled or smashed. Some of the stones, which are up to 70 years old, may have marked the graves of Holocaust survivors who came to Britain after the war, Jewish community leaders said.

Earlier this week, Europe's top human rights watchdog expressed concern at the "considerable and steady rise of anti-Semitic incidents" in Britain.

"While these incidents usually mirror tensions in the Middle East, representatives of the Jewish communities report that there now seems to be a higher level of background violence against these communities," said the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, the Council of Europe's body on combating racism.

There were 532 anti-Semitic incidents in Britain last year, the highest figure in 20 years, said Michael Whine, a spokesman for the Community Security Trust, a Jewish group that works against anti-Semitism.

This New Criterion article, The journalism of warfare, is really fantastic, laying out the threadbare, propagandistic nature of left-wing war "journalism" and the contrast to such luminaries of the right as Victor Davis Hanson. Give 'er a read, why don't you?

Iranians Gathered Outside Evin Prison
The recent wave of Iranian protests inside and outside the country is not yet finished. According to ISNA, people gathered outside Tehran's Evin prison on Tuesday and were shouting pro-democracy slogans and demanding the release of all political prisoners held in this notorious prison.

In particular, there is a growing fear for the health condition of Mr. Nasser Zar Afshan [ناصر زرا?شان] a prominent political activist and lawyer who has been in the Evin prison for many years and protesters were demanding his immediate release for severe medical reasons.

Several writers and women's right activists, family members of other political prisoners, the representatives of Tehran's society of independent lawyers and the representatives of Society for the protecting of human rights in Iran (both local) were among the protesters.

Mr. Zar Afshan was a prominent lawyer in the 90's who worked mostly on human right cases and defending jailed students who were arrested in pro-democracy demonstrations. His presence could not be tolerated by the Mullahs for so long. The authorities planted alcoholic beverages, guns and opium in his office then they raided the office and arrested him for possession of illegal materials! And from that time, he is still in jail....

Recruiting Children
Four Palestinian boys, 15 and 16 years old, have been arrested in Israel, they were recruited by Fatah to carry out suicide bombings. According to the Shin Bet, there's been an alarming increase in the recruitment of minors: 200 Palestinian minors have been detained for terrorist activities in the last year and a half alone, a number just slightly larger than the 183 total that had been detained in the previous three and a half years. One teen's family is furious at Fatah, as they should be; let's see PA information ministry director Ahmed Subh explain to the boys' families how he is "100% sure that these incidents are fabricated from A to Z by the Shin Bet."

How do you know it's really us - the blonde version
Okay, so the other day, on some other blog, some smartass pretended he was evariste and then pretended he was me. So, you know, I got unhappy with that and when I get unhappy, evariste gets working. So he did something or other, he explained it here for the brunettes, and now I have a signature key. So if I post on some other blog, it won't be just zorkmidden, it's gonna have some other code stuff before and after my name and it's gonna look really official (except for Kosher Eucharist, I don't have to look official there because Michael and I are *close*) and anyway you can take like my whole comment and paste it here and click on verify and you can tell if it's really me or not!

And all that is in the left sidebar too, in case you need this again and can't find it.

So that's all you need to know! I made it make sense, didn't I. And they say blondes are dumb... Hmph.
