Would you boo
a contestant, repeatedly and insistently, at a beauty pageant, to punish her for her country's sins? That's what a mob of Mexicans did to Miss USA, a Tennessean girl named Rachel Smith, in Mexico City—displaying an astonishing amount of animosity, and showing themselves to be bad hosts and bad neighbors. As if a young woman competing in a beauty pageant is to blame for everything wrong with American foreign policy. What is Mexico trying to tell us with these ugly antics? Are they just poor sports? Yes and no.
They're inarguably poor sports, as the jeering against Rachel Smith got even worse when the Mexican contestant was eliminated. But that doesn't begin to tell the whole story. If it was nothing more than a lack of sportsmanship, the American
would not be their sole target. Someone else would come in for a little abuse. What they really hate is us specifically,
as they make amply clear.
So they decided to punish a 22-year-old girl for everything they imagine we've done to them. Classy.
Oh, and as the linked article mentions, remember when Mexicans booed our anthem and chanted Osama bin Laden's name over a soccer match? I guess Mexicans are just boors and sore losers. And...need it be pointed out? Ingrates, too. Mexicans: you've disgraced yourselves.
