FUCK YEAH! Some nice American on Discarded Lies noticed that Team America: World Police was at the tip-top of my Amazon wish list, and kindly gave me a 33-and-a-half birthday present.

Folks, if you were part of the demographic that enjoyed South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut, you must immediately acquire a copy of Team America: World Police. It is a work of art, a labor of love, and the creation of true genius. With Bloggie as my witness, I will make it my life's mission to somehow meet and shake hands with Trey Parker. (I'm sure Matt Stone is a nice guy and all, but Parker is very clearly the source of the team's creative fire.)

But I'll talk more about the movie in a future installment of the Root Cellar -- I just wanted to thank the giver, whose online identity is a mystery to me.

Moving on to the meat of today's post: Memorial Day weekend in Washington D.C. means Rolling Thunder -- a huge gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the U.S. who congregate in the nation's capital in honor of POW/MIA service members. They group at various points in the Virginia suburbs before motoring up to the big rally at the Pentagon, and it happens that my sister lives near a Harley dealership in Fairfax, so I got plenty of pictures...

Standing back and not doing anything
A question for our women comrades: could you sit still for ten minutes and listen to your 7-year-old son screaming while your boyfriend, the same boyfriend who's been punching, choking and raping you for months, is punching and kicking him to death?

King Sihanouk, we're waiting
Listen here, Your Majesty

My esteemed comrade made you an offer the other day, an offer you should not refuse. Do you realise, dear King, what an opportunity we're giving you? Do you think we invite just anyone to join bloggie? Well, we don't! You caught us in a moment of generosity and now you take advantage of it?!

Out of respect for your royalness and sickness and old age, we will extend our way-too-generous offer. Now, leave your boring old French blog and come blog with us! Your official bloggie title will be "Retired Comrade King" and you can have an extra pillow and all the posts you want to write (English only, see contract for details). Your responsibilities will include regaling us with stories from your exile (English only, see contract for details), posting bits and pieces of your memoirs (English only, see contract for details), telling us anecdotes and songs from Cambodia (English but some French allowed, see contract for details). Once again, this is an unprecedented opportunity to spend your royal golden years blogging in style. And we can teach you code!

You have until tomorrow, dear King. Please do not wait until the last minute, I'm sure you're aware there are thousands of other royals waiting to pounce upon an open blogging spot. If you refuse, you will face immediate delinkment. I suggest you don't refuse.

People who should have died in jail
31 years after he crossed paths with and killed park ranger Kenneth Patrick, Veronza Bowers Jr. will be leaving prison a free man. Unfortunately for Kenneth, there's no such thing as a parole board that can let you out of the grave after 31 years. Prison is too good for some people.

Children of Hate
An estimated 20,000 Muslim women were raped during the war in Bosnia; Serbs used rape as part of their campaign of terror and ethnic cleansing. Many of the babies who were the products of this campaign were killed at birth but an unknown number survived, a "hidden population," and their stories are heartbreaking.
"One family ... taught their daughter's child to explicitly identify his existence as a mistake, forcing him to introduce himself to household guests as, 'I am the product of my mother's shame,'" says the Unicef report.

Showdown Averted: Bear Turns Tail
Russia agrees to withdraw its troops from Georgia
Russia agreed to remove its bases from Georgia in 1999, but has been stalling and refusing to go anywhere, to Georgians' fury. During President Bush's rock-star trip to Tblisi, he showed support for the Georgian demand, and in his previous trip to the lair of the bear, he spoke with Putin about it. The US Senate also passed a resolution urging the Russians to pack up and go home. After threats from the Georgians to blockade the military bases and refuse soldiers entry visas, Russia denounced the "blackmail" and imperiously declared that "Ultimatum is not the proper language to talk to Russia with" — and promptly caved in. Russia will withdraw in 2008, which is exactly what the Georgians wanted. First they tried to get the Georgians to pay them a $300 million fee for the withdrawal of the bases (nuh-uh) and then they tried to convince them to let them turn them into "antiterrorist centers" (no way). Why are these two bases in Georgia so important to Russia as to cause all this fuss and machiavellian machination? This map from the Christian Science Monitor tells the whole story.
Pretty strategic, innit? Within easy reach of Cyprus, Incirlik air base, Israel, Iraq and Iran, and Russia's permanent Mediterranean naval base in Tartus, Syria.

Along the Silk Road
Chinese missionaries are spreading the Gospel to Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus in over fifty countries, from Southeast Asia to North Africa. Read the whole thing at Marlowe's Shade: "Back to Jerusalem" Along the Silk Road
The idea is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ back along the ancient trade routes known as the Silk Road.

These routes would take the Gospel through some of the most inhospitable regions in the world.

This region, also known as the '10/40 Window,' contains some of the people on Earth most resistant to the Gospel - the Hindus, the Buddhists and the Muslims. Despite the formidable challenge, many Chinese see an opportunity, and as Jesus said, fields white unto harvest.

Abu Hafs Brigades call sleeper cells into action
Big attack coming soon, or just hot air?
Dubai, 30 May (AKI) - The Abu Hafs al-Misri Brigades have called their 'sleeping' European cells to action with a message published on some of the most important Islamist internet forums saying: "We ask all waiting mujahideen, wherever they are, to carry out the planned attack." The message follows months of silence from the group which claimed responsibility for the Madrid train bombings on March 11 last year and threatened Italy last summer.

Iran acquits Pastor Hamid of apostasy
Under the glare of the entire world, Iran has acquitted Hamid Pourmand of apostasy rather than face the bad publicity of executing him while they're trying to worm out from under the spotlight of their nuclear program.
