evariste in Discarded Lies:
Communist China thumbs nose at Catholics
The Vatican said yesterday that Chinese authorities have carried out a new series of arrests of officials from China's illegal Roman Catholic Church.
The most recent arrest occurred Wednesday, when a priest was picked up in Hebei, the same diocese whose bishop was arrested Jan. 3.
In a prepared statement, the Vatican said security forces also detained the 86-year-old bishop of Wenzhou, Monsignor James Lin Xili, on March 20 and, two days later, a lay official of the diocese.
China broke ties with the Vatican in 1951 and demands that Catholics worship only in churches approved by the state-controlled church group. Government churches do not recognize the pope's authority, although they acknowledge the pope as a spiritual leader.
Many Chinese Catholics remain fiercely loyal to Rome and risk arrest by worshipping in unofficial churches and private homes.
The state church claims 4 million believers, but the Cardinal Kung Foundation, a U.S.-based religious monitoring group, has said the unofficial church has 12 million followers.
The pope's deteriorating health was front-page news across much of Asia, but not in China, where the state-run newspapers ignored it before the pope's death last night.
Liu Bainian, vice chairman of the officially recognized church, the Catholic Patriotic Association, said the pope's name was evoked routinely in official religious services. He said several dozen Chinese students had joined about 40 religious leaders in praying for the pope yesterday.
The Holy See recognizes Beijing's diplomatic rival, Taipei on Taiwan.
Beijing has said in the past that it is ready to improve ties, but only on condition that the Vatican cuts ties with Taiwan. The Vatican, which estimates it has about 8 million followers in China, has repeatedly accused Beijing of repressing religion and cracking down on Roman Catholics.
Last September, it accused China of detaining eight priests and two seminary students, the latest in a long series of Catholics seized by China in recent years.
China's glitzy third-world dictators once again displayed their flair for timing by arresting more real (illegal) Catholics, no doubt to disappear into the Chinese gulag system. One of the imprisoned is an 86-year old bishop. The only Catholicism they tolerate is phony-baloney government Catholicism.

I hope John Paul II's successor does to them what John Paul did to the Soviet Union.

Israeli Arab involvement in terrorism
This brief overview of the involvement of Israeli Arabs in terrorism doesn't contain any bombshells. This is interesting, though:
Involvement of Israeli Arabs in terrorism: In 2004, 25 cells were uncovered in which 50 Israeli Arabs were involved. Since the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian violent confrontation (September 2000), 112 cells that perpetrated or planned to perpetrate terrorist attacks have been uncovered; 236 Israeli Arabs were involved in the activity of these cells. 136 Israelis were killed and 790 were wounded as a result of terrorist attacks perpetrated by these cells.
so how does an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza make Israel safer when there are hostile Arabs inside Israel? They have a pie chart at the bottom that shows that 15 of 25 cells in 2005 were directed by Palestinian terror groups, 3 by Hezballah, and 7 were homegrown. It's the homegrown ones that you have to worry the most about, because they can operate in the most secrecy, not needing to communicate outside the country.

Iran 'honors' The Pope But Persecutes Christians
While Khatami is in Rome to 'pay tribute' to Pope John Paul II, I suggest The Vatican seriously put mullahs in Tehran under pressure to give amnesty to Hamid Pourmand, Iranian Pastor who was sentenced to jail and still faces the death penalty:
On 16th February of this year, Pourmand was convicted before a Tehran military court of deceiving the Iranian armed forces about his conversion nearly 25 years ago. Paramoud allegedly failed to declare that he was a convert from Islam to Christianity when he acquired officer rank. Under the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran, it is illegal for a non-Muslim to serve as a military officer.

According to the Centre for Religious Freedom, Pourmand’s lawyer reportedly produced evidence that Pourmand’s military superiors recognised several years ago that he was a Christian and had given him exemptions from participating in Muslim fasts. However, that the evidence was rejected as false and Pourmand was sentenced to three years in prison with the loss of all benefits.
"Hamid Pourmand has already been stripped of his freedom and his job, and his family has been made destitute," commented Stuart Windsor, CSW's National Director. "He now faces a death sentence if the shari’ah court finds him guilty. CSW calls on the international community to do all it can to put pressure on the Iranian authorities to safeguard his life."

sine in The People's Diner:
Recipe for Success in Math
1. Do not attempt to diet while taking a math class. Your brain will need fuel.

2. Chocolate is an excellent brain fuel. So are most foods containing butter or lard.

3. You may find cheese helpful.

4. Of course success in math requires a good deal of sudying. You should study in a quiet, well-lit location near a well-stocked refrigerator.

5. If you are the sort of person who gets too distracted at home and thus prefers to study at the library, make good use of the library's resources by sitting at a study carrel in a corner far from the librarians. You will of course have smuggled food in your backpack, and you do not want the librarians to catch you eating it.

6. Bottled beverages are easy to smuggle into the library. To smuggle in cappucino use one of those beverage carriers that you can often get at coffee places. Try to get one that fits snugly into the bottom of your backpack. (Back when I was in school we only had regular coffee and no cup carriers. I would try to wedge the cup upright among the books in my backpack, but I always wound up with coffee soaked books. You can try this in an emergency.)

7. Speaking of cappucino, quit asking for skim milk in it. Get the fattiest milk available.

8. How can you tell if you have enough fuel for your studies at the library? A good rule of thumb is that your food and beverages should require enough space that your backpack is inadequate to carry your books. You should need to carry at least a few books in your hands.

9. Your mother will tell you that fish is brain food, and if she senses weakness, she may also postulate that spinach, carrots and beets are very good for the brain. Do not listen to her. See item number 2.

10. Do not become a vegetarian while taking a math class. (If you are already an experienced vegetarian, you will probably be okay.)

11. Did you know that the human brain is primarily composed of bacon fat? Strangely enough, this is true even of people who do not eat bacon. Thus bacon is an important component of breakfast on exam days. If you are a truly serious scholar of mathematics, you should join the Bacon of the Month Club.

12. If you do not eat bacon, do not worry, eggs are also quite helpful. You may cook the eggs anyway you like: fried, scrambled, poached, boiled, etc, but it has been proven that cheese-containing omelettes improve math performance the most.

13. Use Kosher Salt! Sprinkling your food with kosher salt will double the math power of your brain as compared to using regular table salt. Regular table salt makes food uniformly salty, which is fine, but not optimal for the math student. The coarse crystals of kosher salt, on the other hand, provide saltiness in discrete flavor bursts. Each flavor burst jolts your brain out its usual state and into a highly mathematical energy state. Although the effect of each individual jolt is short-lived, the result is cumulative. (Of course, this does not apply to salt used in cooking, since the crystals dissolve.)

There you have it! A recipe for guaranteed success in math.

Michael Schiavo encourages other murderers
WorldNetDaily: Granddaughter yanks grandma's feeding tube
In a situation recalling the recent death of Terri Schiavo in Florida, an 81-year-old widow, denied nourishment and fluids for nearly two weeks, is clinging to life in a hospice in LaGrange, Ga., while her immediate family fights desperately to save her life before she dies of starvation and dehydration.

Mae Magouirk was neither terminally ill, comatose nor in a "vegetative state," when Hospice-LaGrange accepted her as a patient about two weeks ago upon the request of her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, 36, an elementary school teacher.

Also upon Gaddy's request and without prior legal authority, since March 28 Hospice-LaGrange has denied Magouirk normal nourishment or fluids via a feeding tube through her nose or fluids via an IV. She has been kept sedated with morphine and ativan, a powerful tranquillizer.

Her nephew, Ken Mullinax, told WorldNetDaily that although Magouirk is given morphine and ativan, she has not received any medication to keep her eyes lubricated during her forced dehydration.

"They haven't given her anything like that for two weeks," said Mullinax. "She can't produce tears."

The dehydration is being done in defiance of Magouirk's specific wishes, which she set down in a "living will," and without agreement of her closest living next-of-kin, two siblings and a nephew: A. Byron McLeod, 64, of Anniston, Ga.; Ruth Mullinax, 74, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Ruth Mullinax's son, Ken Mullinax.

Magouirk's husband and only child, a son, are both deceased.

In her living will, Magouirk stated that fluids and nourishment were to be withheld only if she were either comatose or "vegetative," and she is neither. Nor is she terminally ill, which is generally a requirement for admission to a hospice.

Magouirk lives alone in LaGrange, though because of glaucoma she relied on her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, to bring her food and do errands.

Two weeks ago, Magouirk's aorta had a dissection, and she was hospitalized in the local LaGrange Hospital. Her aortic problem was determined to be severe, and she was admitted to the intensive care unit. At the time of her admission she was lucid and had never been diagnosed with dementia.

Claiming that she held Magouirk's power of attorney, Gaddy had her transferred to Hospice-LaGrange, a 16-bed unit owned by the same family that owns the hospital. Once at the hospice, Gaddy stated that she did not want her grandmother fed or given water.
I'm just sick to my stomach, and I don't know what to say. (Thanks, Mary in LA.)

Are you in the DC Metro area and ISO secondhand furniture?
Throbert's parents are trying to unload a few items at prices that would make Crazy Eddie say "What, you think I'm some Little Sister of Mercy running a fucking charity here?"

Also on offer are a queen-size sofa bed with classic rec-room upholstery in nubby brown plaid and a king-size bed with only a few years of use -- I still need to take the photos of those.

In the Root Cellar Comments section, Aridog opined:

Bill Clinton had a choice, and he made the wrong one. Period. Period. What WAS he thinking? Nothing obviously. Bad Trait for a POTUS. I am sorry, but a moderately decent looking chubby chick ( and that is being charitable) 25+ years_ your junior wants to vacuum your swinging richard, you have not much life if that is hugely irresistable.

Well, if a man's type is "chubby with accessible girl-next-door looks," it's highly presumptuous to tell him that he's settling or doesn't have a life -- de gustibus, I say.

But I agree on the overratedness of much younger partners -- they're so jejeune, and I'm not even sure what jejeune means.

I tend to agree with Benjamin Franklin's advice to a young bachelor who wasn't ready to settle down, but who didn't want to give up chasing 'tang -- except, of course, that I go for corn dogs rather than tacos, myself:

June 25. 1745
My dear Friend,
I know of no Medicine fit to diminish the violent natural Inclinations you mention; and if I did, I think I should not communicate it to you. Marriage is the proper Remedy. It is the most natural State of Man, and therefore the State in which you are most likely to find solid Happiness. Your Reasons against entring into it at present, appear to me not well-founded. The circumstantial Advantages you have in View by postponing it, are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with that of the Thing itself, the being married and settled. It is the Man and Woman united that make the compleat human Being. Separate, she wants his Force of Body and Strength of Reason; he, her Softness, Sensibility and acute Discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the World. A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles the odd Half of a Pair of Scissars. If you get a prudent healthy Wife, your Industry in your Profession, with her good Economy, will be a Fortune sufficient.
But if you will not take this Counsel, and persist in thinking a Commerce with the Sex inevitable, then I repeat my former Advice, that in all your Amours you should prefer old Women to young ones. You call this a Paradox, and demand my Reasons. They are these:
1. Because as they have more Knowledge of the World and their Minds are better stor'd with Observations, their Conversation is more improving and more lastingly agreable.
2. Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good. To maintain their Influence over Men, they supply the Diminution of Beauty by an Augmentation of Utility. They learn to do a 1000 Services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of all Friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable. And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old Woman who is not a good Woman.
3. Because there is no hazard of Children, which irregularly produc'd may be attended with much Inconvenience.
4. Because thro' more Experience, they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion. The Commerce with them is therefore safer with regard to your Reputation. And with regard to theirs, if the Affair should happen to be known, considerate People might be rather inclin'd to excuse an old Woman who would kindly take care of a young Man, form his Manners by her good Counsels, and prevent his ruining his Health and Fortune among mercenary Prostitutes.
5. Because in every Animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest Part: The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above with a Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement.
6. Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin, and make her for Life unhappy.
7. Because the Compunction is less. The having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflections; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy.
8thly and Lastly They are so grateful!!

Hospices and Euthanasia Part III
In the past two posts I've addressed some of the philosophical and even spiritual justifications for the right-to-die movement, and I think I've demonstrated that ideologically it represents euthanasia with some good marketing. In this post I'd like to explore how this is being applied in hospices. I have heard of and personally experienced many positive end of life situations in hospices, and do not intend to tar all of them with the same brush. But as we recently saw with Suncoast Florida were Terri Schiavo was illegally held, when the governance of the hospice is guided by any of the principles outlined in the last two posts, abuses can and will occur.

The Hospice Patient Alliance is a consumer advocacy group for patients of hospices and their families. They have been documenting reports of patients who have been euthanized in hospices and have posted over a dozen on their site. They are all heart-wrenching but this one was particularly poignant:

I want to tell a story of a Holocaust survivor who I watched and begged for help even to the police I went. His name is Heini Sobel, born in Vienna, Austria, in 1919, June 10. He suffered thru the Holocaust and in the end murdered by a local Lawyer, who refused to let him have his blood transfusion which Heini's best friend who is from *********, Calif. and his name is Dr. ** Rosen*********, had requested be given to him. Between the two of us we tried our best to get help but this Lawyer and Hospice overruled us. Heini, begged his self to please let him have the blood. In the process I was forced to watch him be drugged and continuously be given shots which he did not want and every time they shot him he would say it hurt him. He even said they are "murdering me"!!!!!!

Not to mention the starving and no water. I my self am from a Holocaust family from Vienna, Austria. I became so sick not one human cared and this is legal. The Angel of Death is living in America, this Death Angel left the Nazi Camps and moved to America. I find this so unbelievable that a man who suffered all his life was given to legal murders in America. In the end the Nazis got him after all.

What can be done can I speak out what?? Please let me know!!

I previously posted some of these stories of the injured and disabled being targeted for euthanasia in other medical settings.

One pattern that emerges from the stories above is the god-like power the medical staff can wield and the lack of accountability especially to the families of patients. We only need to look again at the full-blown euthanasia model in The Netherlands;
Before 1991 it was difficult to obtain facts about the incidence of euthanasia in Holland, because the KNMG had chosen a very narrow definition of the word. The Dutch officially define euthanasia as the ending of the life of one person by another at the first person's request. If life is ended without request, as it often is, it is not considered to be euthanasia and therefore official statistics have always been lower than actual numbers. For example, Dutch doctors, for obvious reasons, prefer not to use the term "involuntary euthanasia" but call it the more sanitized "termination of the patient without explicit request". Dr. John Keown, an English legal scholar, has commented on this redefinition, "By narrowly defining euthanasia as referring only to "active voluntary euthanasia" rather than to all cases in which death is brought about on purpose as part of the medical care given to the patient, the Dutch minimize the frequency with which death is "intentionally accelerated by a doctor."
The Remmelink Report of 1991 found that about 38% of deaths in Holland were due to a "medical decision at end of life" but only a fraction of these were reported as euthanasia, despite the fact that the doctors and not the patients are heavily protected under Dutch law. What this tells us is that much of the euthanasia occurs in an unregulated fashion by doctors making medical decisions without accountability. This reflects the situations in the US hospices cited above.

Euphemism, secrecy, and a lack of accountability seem to be inherent in the practice of euthanasia. For this reason alone it should be opposed. We clearly have a choice between the cold utilitarianism of the Nazi euthanasia programs, echoed by right-to-die pundits, or we have the committment to face these end of life challenges in a way that values life and and has true respect for human dignity.

How state and federal law unjustly punishes divorced reservist fathers
This isn't something I know an awful lot about, but if things are as bad as Schlafly makes them sound, it ain't right.
Most reservists called upon to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan have paid a big price: a significant reduction of their wages as they transferred from civilian to military jobs, separation from their loved ones, and of course the risk of battle wounds or death.

Regrettably, on their return home, those who are divorced fathers could face other grievous penalties: loss of their children, financial ruin, prosecution as "deadbeat dads" and even jail.

Child-support orders for reservists are usually based on their civilian wages. When they are called up to active duty that burden doesn't decrease. Few can get court modification before they leave, modifications are seldom granted anyway, and even if a father applied for modification before deployment the debt continues to grow until the case is decided much later.

Military fathers cannot get relief when they return because federal law forbids courts from reducing child-support debt retroactively. Once the arrearage reaches $5,000, the father becomes a felon subject to imprisonment and forfeiture of his driver's license, professional licenses and passport.

Likewise, there is no forgiving of interest and penalties on child-support debt even though it is sometimes incurred as a result of human or computer errors. States have a financial incentive to refuse to reduce obligations because the federal government rewards states with cash for the "deadbeat dad" dollars they collect.

Laws granting deployed service personnel protection from legal actions at home date back decades, but they are ignored in family court. Child kidnapping laws do not protect military personnel on active duty from having their ex-wives relocate their children.

This injustice to reservists serving in Iraq and Afghanistan should be remedied by Congress and state legislatures before more fathers meet the fate of Bobby Sherrill, a father of two from North Carolina, who worked for Lockheed Martin Corp. in Kuwait before being captured and held hostage by Iraq for five terrible months. The night Sherrill returned from the Persian Gulf he was arrested for failing to pay $1,425 in child support while he was held captive.

In February, a Wilkes-Barre, Pa., judge sentenced 28 men to jail for failure to pay small amounts of child support, one as little as $322. One common punishment for falling behind in court-ordered payments is to seize a man's driver's license. This can cost him his job. Yet he is still required to make child-support payments and can be thrown in jail if that proves to be impossible.

Politicians today are engaged in a spirited debate about giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants so they can drive to work. But somehow the law has already decided that a divorced father, who might have fallen behind in child-support payments, should be punished by forfeiting his license.

The New York Times recently exposed the ridiculous case of truck driver Donald Gardner, who was left penniless after a 1997 car accident put him in the hospital for three years. When he tried to return to work, he found that the state had taken suspended his driver's license because he owed $119,846 in child support.

The Times reported that, as of 2003, fathers allegedly owed $96 billion in child support. However, 70 percent is owed by men who earn less than $10,000 a year or have no wage earnings at all, so we have a $3 billion government bureaucracy working to get blood out of a turnip.

The most bizarre part of the system is that child-support payments are not required to be spent on children and are not based on any estimates of their needs or expenses. Support orders come from court-created formulas based on the income of the father, while the mother is allowed to treat child support like any other entitlement, such as welfare or alimony.

Although there are no official statistics, it is estimated that more than 100,000 fathers are jailed per year for failing to make child-support payments. Another perverse feature of the system is that child-support payments are in no way related to whether a father is allowed to see his children or whether his visitation rights are enforced.

Mubarak is still imprisoning Ayman Nour
How committed is Prez Fo' Life Hosni Mubarak to pluralistic democracy? The test will be whether Ayman Nour ever gets sprung from jail and the phony charges against him.
Supporters of Egypt's newest political party are calling on the government to free their leader, Ayman Nour, who is currently being detained on what they claim are trumped up charges.

Party of Tomorrow leader Mr Nour is regarded as a potential presidential candidate.

But his continued imprisonment is damaging his chances of running against President Hosni Mubarak later in 2005.

Mr Nour has been held in custody since the end of January.
