Restoring America's Honor
Now this is nice (via John Weidner):
This is from The Faith of the American Soldier, by Stephen Mansfield, page 156:
....It worked. Both through the reforms that the military enacted to correct the scandals, and through the proactive ministries of the new chaplains, Abu Ghraib has been transformed. Chaplain Taylor explained that there have been no further abuses and that, in fact, the prison has become a model success story. Attendence at chapel services reaches into the hundreds. Now, many of the soldiers stationed at Abu Ghraib with the 391st [Military Police Battalion, from Columbus, Ohio] carry medallions in their pockets that express their pride in the opportunity to live down the negative stigma of the prison. The slogan on the coin defines their newfound sense of mission. It says simply, "Restoring America's Honor."....

"Restoring America's Honor." Well, you could have predicted it. But they won't get any praise from media or leftiests or "pacifists", because this story doesn't fit the Party Line. And the harpies who gorged on Abu Ghraib don't want America's honor restored. They hate America. When Abu Ghraib hit the news, they swelled up to twice their size, and their eyes glowed, and they made little smacking noises with their lips (metaphorically speaking).
Where are the breathless front-page stories in the NY Times for this? The truth is, the media only cares about their self-appointed role as the “Fourth Estate” (and fifth column).

Stock Ho Syndrome
A kidnapped Columbian politician has borne her captor's child-willingly. Stockholm syndrome, blah blah blah-this is ridiculous! What kind of person falls in love with their kidnapper? I have a hard time wrapping my mind around this.

This is the equivalent of John Edwards being willingly impregnated by Al Zarqawi.
Colombia has been shocked by claims that one of its most celebrated kidnap victims has had a love child with a guerrilla captor at a secret jungle prison camp.

Clara Rojas, who was running for vice-president to the French Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt when they were seized by left-wing Farc rebels four years ago, reportedly gave birth to a boy, now two years old, after a consensual relationship with a Farc guerrilla.

Einsatzgruppe
When the The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem visited Hitler in 1941, it wasn't just to have tea: Nazis planned Holocaust for Palestine
In 1942, the Nazis created a special "Einsatzgruppe", a mobile SS death squad, which was to carry out the mass slaughter of Jews in Palestine similar to the way they operated in eastern Europe, the historians argue in a new study.

The director of the Nazi research centre in Ludwigsburg, Klaus-Michael Mallman, and Berlin historian Martin Cueppers say an Einsatzgruppe was all set to go to Palestine and begin killing the roughly half a million Jews that had fled Europe to escape Nazi death camps like Auschwitz and Birkenau.

In the study, published last month, they say "Einsatzgruppe Egypt" was standing by in Athens and was ready to disembark for Palestine in the summer of 1942, attached to the "Afrika Korps" led by the famed desert commander General Erwin Rommel.

The Middle East death squad, similar to those operating throughout eastern Europe during the war, was to be led by SS Obersturmbannfuehrer Walther Rauff, the historians say.

"The central plan for the group was the realisation of the Holocaust in Palestine," the authors wrote in their study that appears in a book entitled "Germans, Jews, Genocide: The Holocaust as History and the Present."

But since Germany never conquered British-controlled Palestine, plans for bringing the Holocaust to what is now Israel and the Palestinian territories never came to fruition.

Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis in Europe. According to their own records, the Einsatzgruppen killed over one million people, most of them civilians.

Canada Conservatives' Throne Speech hails US
I bet the hot Governor-General appointed by Paul Martin just hated having to deliver this speech on behalf of Stephen Harper's Conservatives.
Ottawa — The federal Conservatives acknowledged the priorities of other political parties but signalled a strong directional shift from the previous Liberal government in a Throne Speech yesterday that referred to the United States as "our best friend and largest trading partner."

The address that Governor-General Michaëlle Jean delivered in the Senate contained few surprises. The government of Stephen Harper focused on its established priorities of accountability, safe streets, reduced waiting times for medical treatment and a tax cut.

"In support of building a stronger Canada, the government's agenda will be clear and focused," the speech said. "It will clean up government, provide real support to ordinary working families and strengthen our federation as well as our role in the world."

The speech, which was drafted by the Conservative communications shop and revised by Mr. Harper, was a brief, bare-bones offering. Half as long as most Throne Speeches, it stuck to its key themes without hyperbole. The Prime Minister will address Parliament today to elaborate.

The Governor-General delivered her first Throne Speech at a slow, deliberate pace after arriving to fanfare from a military band and inspecting the honour guard on Parliament Hill.

Liberal Leader Bill Graham said the government blueprint set forth yesterday did not adequately address a number of his party's concerns, including the environment, child care and aboriginal issues.
I have four words for Bill Graham: you lost the election.

Improving ties with the USA, a tax cut (1% off the GST), tougher sentencing, more cops on the beat, Senate reform (the Canadian Senate is an anti-democratic travesty)-what's not to like? They don't go as far as I'd like, but the Conservatives' hold on power in Canada is very tentative, and they have to pull their punches. For now.
