Are there any draftophobics in America?
I just read this article about how Germans have a fear of drafts, they believe that a breeze coming through an open window can cause pneumonia or flu or colds. Many Greeks have the same fear - even doctors! Greeks firmly believe that "sitting in a draft" can cause backaches, toothaches and headaches. You can't ask the taxi driver if you can open the window a little, he'll complain that the draft will "hit him on the neck." You shouldn't sit in front of an open window, even in the middle of the summer, because "there's a draft". And if you say "yeah, that's the whole point, it's 140 degrees in here and this is the only spot that has a bit of a breeze" the answer of course is "but you'll get sick!"

Panel of FISA judges to Senate: wiretaps were legal
Do you think this'll snap the Democrats dreaming about impeachment out of their reverie? Or will they continue to cling to the one opportunistic, partisan FISA judge who only thought it was necessary to resign and denounce Bush after the Democrats tried to turn the President discharging his duties into a criminal?
A panel of former Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judges yesterday told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that President Bush did not act illegally when he created by executive order a wiretapping program conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA).
The five judges testifying before the committee said they could not speak specifically to the NSA listening program without being briefed on it, but that a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act does not override the president's constitutional authority to spy on suspected international agents under executive order.
"If a court refuses a FISA application and there is not sufficient time for the president to go to the court of review, the president can under executive order act unilaterally, which he is doing now," said Judge Allan Kornblum, magistrate judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida and an author of the 1978 FISA Act. "I think that the president would be remiss exercising his constitutional authority by giving all of that power over to a statute."
The judges, however, said Mr. Bush's choice to ignore established law regarding foreign intelligence gathering was made "at his own peril," because ultimately he will have to answer to Congress and the Supreme Court if the surveillance was found not to be in the best interests of national security.
Judge Kornblum said before the 1978 FISA law, foreign surveillance was done by executive order and the law itself was altered by the orders of Presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan.

A rare history maker
I first heard of Rudolph Vrba a few years ago, when I was reading about the Holocaust and the Nazi death camps. He's one of the very few people to have escaped from the horrors of Auschwitz where he had been imprisoned for two years. He and Alfred Wetzler, his fellow escapee, hid for three days in a pile of lumber in the camp's perimeter before making a run for the Slovakian border. Mr. Vrba and Mr. Wetzler were the first people to bring eyewitness accounts of Auschwitz-Birkenau, they wrote a report known as the Auschwitz protocols where they detailed the horrors that were taking place in the camps and which shocked the world. Even though their report was too late to prevent the deportations of the Hungarian Jews - the main reason for Mr. Vrba's escape - the two are credited with saving thousands of lives.

Mr. Vrba died this week at the age of 82. May he rest in peace.
