Dubai Ports World enforces boycott of Israel
Here's a real reason to get worked up over the Dubai Ports World deal: PCZC, the parent company that owns Dubai Ports World, also participates in the Arab boycott against Israel. Will the company try to export the Arab boycott of Israel to American shores? A boycott which is illegal under US law, but mandatory under UAE law? How can they square this circle?
In a section entitled "Frequently Asked Questions", the site lists six documents that are required in order to clear an item through the Dubai Customs Department. One of them, called a "Certificate of Origin," "is used by customs to confirm the country of origin and needs to be seen by the office which ensures any trade boycotts are enforced," according to the website.

A-Din of the Israel boycott office confirmed that his office examines certificates of origin as a means of verifying whether a product originated in the Jewish state.

Sleep
This article clearly explains why evariste would rather sleep until late afternoon; his habit of keeping vampire hours has nothing to do with the wild and crazy programmer lifestyle of his, it is due to a mutation in his body clock. So we shouldn't blame him for partying coding too much, we should instead be happy that he doesn't keep a polyphasic sleep schedule and also be very-very glad that he doesn't suffer from fatal familial insomnia. Ftu-ftu-ftu!

Saudi Book Fair
From Saudi Jeans: Exclusive: Riyadh International Book Fair
Last night I went to a panel on cultural diversity, and I have enjoyed a very good discussion. The panel was done the Saudi style, with the only female speaker Dr. Khairia Al-Saggaf talking from another room, where we could not see her but only listen to her voice. This made Dr. Warner Dawm, the German speaker, says he wishes Dr. Al-Saggaf was sitting with them on the same podium. She did not comment on that, but one of the audience later told the German guy to respect our culture and traditions. I did not think he was being disrespectful, and I'm glad that he did not apologize.

There was a lot of extremists in the audience, who insisted that anyone different from us is an infidel, and that we have to deal with him on this principle. I liked it when Dr. Faisal Al-Muammar, the moderator of the panel, stopped the same man from talking in an offending manner about Shiites, describing them as rafidha. Shiites were the subject of a hot debate at the end of the panel, when Dr. Khaled Al-Dakheel said that Shiites are part of us. This was the point where the panel went out of control. Before Al-Dakheel was able to complete that sentence, a Sheikh from the first row interrupted and told Dr. Al-Dakheel that Shiites are not Muslims, and that he has to say this.
Wonderful and revealing post. I thought this comment was funny:
I really don't understand what is wrong with these people! Don't they know that whether they like it or not things will change eventually. Either "we" grow up and make the changes ourselves or Bush and his neo-con goons are comin' over!
Damn straight. So grow up already!

Out of Money
James Wolfensohn warns that the Palestinian Authority is in danger of financial collapse within two weeks, since Israel decided to withdraw financial support from a terrorist organisation sworn to her destruction. And as far as the promises of financial help from Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood, does anyone really think they'd be enough to replace the aid coming from the West? Wolfensohn had to urge the Arab countries to give money to the Palestinians. Arab brotherhood and all that.
In Brussels on Monday, the European Union considered sending euro120 million (US$143 million) in emergency aid to the Palestinians before a Hamas-led government takes office, but kept silent on what to do once the militant group is in power.

Both the United States and the EU consider Hamas a terrorist group but are wary of causing an economic collapse in Palestinian territories.

From soldiers to hairdressers
Liberia is trying to recover from the chaos of war; her economy is in ruins, there is no infrastructure, no money, and unemployment is at 85%. As if these problems are not difficult enough to overcome without sliding into war again, Liberia is also facing the task of teaching a generation of children soldiers to abandon war and learn life skills: Boy soldiers learn to be hairdressers
Jackson Fayia, 17, and his three comrades in the shattered town of Foya in northern Liberia are former child soldiers. Children fighting children was one of the most abhorrent aspects of the brutal wars that tore this small west African country apart from 1989 to 2003, killing more than 200,000 people and displacing almost half its population of 3m.

Boys as young as nine were used in the Small Boys Units of Charles Taylor, the warlord turned president, and those of the rebel groups fighting him. They were drugged and sent to the front line, almost as cannon fodder, while girls were abused by commanders as sex slaves.

Of 100,000 ex-fighters disarmed by the United Nations since the conflict ended in 2003, nearly 12,000 were children — 2,738 of them girls. All but 25 children have been reunited with their families by Unicef and about half are now at school or in skills programmes such as the one in Foya, learning anything from carpentry to pastry making.
A very high percentage of children soldiers were re-united with their families. Kudos to Unicef.

evariste in Discarded Lies:
Communism eradicates traditional Chinese culture
One of the hallmarks of Chinese culture is the young supporting their elderly parents in their infirmity. It is being destroyed by the life-hating Communist "one-child" policy. It's incredibly sad to read about millions of elderly Chinese forced to resort to begging to support themselves. They've been hit by a double whammy: they could only raise one child to support them, and that one child has moved to the city to find work now that China's rulers have decided that to be rich is glorious. Left behind is grandma.

Let one of the lessons of the 20th century be that it is folly to attempt to remake man, and the world, anew.
