Introducing the Bloggie Beit Midrash
בס״ד

zorkie and ev have graciously asked me to join the bloggie team with a sideblog of my own, on matters of Judaica, (which, I guess, is my area of expertise). I'm not a Rabbi - I don't even play one on TV - but I do have access to more than 3300 years of Jewish scholarship which I have been studying for most of my life.

Partners in terror
Iran wants to turn Hamas into Hezbollah, according to Henry Crumpton, the State Department's counterterrorism coordinator. Crumpton brings up the concept of a nuclear-armed Hezbollah -- not only can Israel be attacked by nuclear missiles coming from Teheran, a nuclear attack could also come from Iran's proxy army at Israel's border -- and he's certain that Iran will be doing its best to coopt a willing Hamas leadership into becoming Iran's next Hezbollah-style proxy terror gang.
Crumpton said that while Iran does not yet have that kind of control over Hamas, "it is clearly an objective. The Iranians would love to have another proxy like that."

Asked what will keep Hamas from gaining such control, Crumpton said, "I hope the Palestinian people; and I hope the leadership of Hamas, if they are going to be responsible or courageous enough."
Responsible and courageous leaders care for their people and want them to flourish and prosper, they don't urge them to commit violence and murder.

No Dogs Allowed
This installment is strictly for cat lovers, I don’t want to go down in history as some kind of a cat-Nazi (among other things), so it’s OK to peek, M-Max. You will be in the fine company of annie, Tutsy, Pamela and whoever else loves (or in your case "tolerates") cats.

zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
Imeldita
I have a deep dislike for dictators and an even deeper dislike for dictators' wives. I've always found Imelda Marcos repulsive; she's a thief and a liar, and her chutzpah, audacity, and sanctimonious drivel are beyond belief. She and her husband pilfered billions on jewels and art and New York real estate and international travels and vacations, while their people subsisted on starvation wages. What's amazing to me is that Imelda is not only back in the Philippines - I think she should be in jail - but that the Filipino people seem to have forgiven her actions. The weird world of Imelda Marcos
Imelda though remains enraged at her subsequent treatment. "We found ourselves in Hawaii, penniless, homeless and name-less," she says, slapping the table for emphasis. US Customs records showed the family arrived with nearly $9m in cash, jewellery and bonds. When Ferdinand died in 1989, Imelda found herself alone fighting in what she calls the "trial of the century" in New York on graft charges. After enjoying the backing of five US presidents and the close friendship of Ronald and Nancy Reagan (with whom she shared an interest in astrology), the shock of America turning on her was profound.

"They did this to me when I was alone, widowed and orphaned," she says, on the verge of tears. "Even the Bible says there are special places reserved in hell for those who persecute widows and orphans. And it was not individuals who did me in, it was governments and superpowers."

US confident Binnie's among friends in Pak
When President Bush visits Musharraf in Islamabad this week, he'll be a few hours' drive away from where the US thinks bin Laden is, and I have a creepy feeling there will be an assassination attempt. Ahmad Rashid damningly indicts Musharraf's dull inaction in the face of bin Laden's presence on his territory, and his failure to close down suicide terrorist training camps that were detailed to him by Hamid Karzai. Well worth a read. (I personally think Binnie's in Iran, or dead).

Why drug dealers live with their moms
A fascinating snippet from Freakonomics, a very trendy book I intend to read at some point-despite the fact that the author used very lousy, contrived numbers to imply that abortion cuts crime. His numbers on that one are so bad that one cannot avoid concluding that the data was tailored to fit the conclusion. In short, Levitt was trolling.
But Levitt's book is filled with provocative conclusions based upon analyzing data, not morality. He encourages you to think about common problems in new, unconventional ways.

So why do drug dealers still live with their mothers? Because most of them don't make much money. Based on unbelievably detailed records of an actual Chicago neighborhood gang, Levitt found that, while the leader (who's now in jail) made $100,000 a year (tax free) over four years, his officers made only $700 a month and his foot soldiers made only $3.30 an hour, less than the minimum wage. "They had no choice but to live with their mothers." Who knew?
