Being Gay in Russia
Old prejudices die hard: in communist Russia, homosexuals were jailed for five years and were classified as having a mental disorder; in 2005, an opinion poll showed that almost half of Russians believe that gay men should be imprisoned. Under those conditions it's awfully brave for Russian gay and lesbian activists to even think of staging a Gay Pride parade. The parade was of course vetoed by Moscow's city government on the grounds that the idea has caused "outrage" in society.
Earlier this week Chief Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin warned that Russia's Muslims would stage violent protests if the march went ahead. "If they come out on to the streets anyway they should be flogged. Any normal person would do that - Muslims and Orthodox Christians alike ... [The protests] might be even more intense than protests abroad against those controversial cartoons."

The cleric said the Koran taught that homosexuals should be killed because their lifestyle spells the extinction of the human race and said that gays had no human rights.

The Russian Orthodox Church has called it "the propaganda of sin". Bishop Daniil of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk yesterday condemned the plans as a "cynical mockery" and likened homosexuality to leprosy.

Taliwood: a star is born
Lions of Islam-coming soon to a theater near you. If you're near Peshawar or Kandahar, that is. I'm glad to see the Taliban have decided that movies are OK after all-they were famous for banning singing of every kind, music, instruments, kite-flying, and everything else you can imagine. Now they're in the biz? I want to see the credits on this one. I bet Gary Busey plays Infidel #3.

Herman's Story
Herman Rosenblat was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp in Poland when he was 12 years old. He survived with the help of a 9-year-old girl who lived near the camp and who would toss apples and bread across a fence to Herman. Fourteen years later, in New York, Herman goes on a blind date and guess who he meets?

A very sweet note to this incredible and moving story: at 76, Herman finally gets his bar mitzvah.

It's to laugh for
The Producers is playing in Tel Aviv and Times correspondent Stephen Farrell calls it one of his weirdest Middle East moments. I think I need to see the film again, I didn't think it was that funny when I saw it, but that's probably because I wasn't familiar with the American or Jewish sense of humour back then.
On the day Baghdad fell we ran into an American soldier, utterly clueless about his role in history, stopping us to ask "Which city is this?"

In Najaf during one of the fiercest military battles of the Iraq insurgency I saw Moqtada al-Sadr's militia cackling with laughter at the hoary old "Yes but are you a Catholic Shia or Protestant Shia" joke from Northern Ireland.

In Fallujah a terrifying kidnap descended into hysterical scenes as I watched a roomful of Baathist insurgents stand in a circle and compare bald spots, before gravely agreeing that Her Majesty's Times correspondent’s beat them all.

In northern Pakistan I dug into my pocket for a Taleban collection plate - the fiercely-bearded collectors made clear it was not a voluntary donation - and inadvertently pulled out a ten shekel piece from Jerusalem complete with Jewish menorah and Hebrew lettering.

The God of News had presented a perfect way out of an awkward moral dilemma, and as I dropped it into the plate I just wished I could have been there later in the day to witness the consternation when the takings were counted, and the confirmation of all their darkest conspiracy theories.

But nothing, nothing compared with the scene of a Nazi-saluting Israeli actor, whose own European Jewry grandfather was a personal friend of Franz Kafka - shouting "Heil" on an Israeli theatre stage while wearing a Third Reich helmet, gravely assuring an audience of Kristallnacht survivors: "the Fuhrer was a great dancer".

Perhaps cartoonists should be killing schoolkids instead
Yesterday in Baghdad, Islamists killed four Muslim children as they were walking to school. No one rioted.
The children were killed by a roadside bomb which targeted a liquor shop in Baghdad, according to sources at Iraq's Ministry of Interior. The liquor shop was reportedly destroyed and several surrounding buildings badly damaged, according to the AP. Similar attacks on liquor stores by religious groups have been frequent in Iraq. The dead included two sisters and their brother.

At least 14 other people, including six policemen, died in car bombings and shootings across the Iraqi capital.

The Civilization of Melted Butter
If we don’t quit while we’re ahead (Italian troops still in Iraq, No bombs in our soil, Fabrizio Quattrocchi,, hand-bagging with Iran, march for Israel etc) Italy may well turn up being the straw that broke the camel’s back…

I’ve come across this piece and I want to read it back to you guys…
ROME - Italy's Reform Minister Roberto Calderoli has had T-shirts made emblazoned with cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a move that could embarrass Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government.
and get us, shall we say, a lot of attention?
Calderoli, a member of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, told Ansa news agency on Tuesday that the West had to stand up against Islamist extremists and offered to hand out T-shirts to anyone who wanted them.
(Northern-Italian localist party. No harm in wanting to keep your house tidy.
"I have had T-shirts made with the cartoons that have upset Islam and I will start wearing them today," Ansa quoted Calderoli as saying.
he’s nuts; he’ll do it
He said the T-shirts were not meant to be a provocation but added that he saw no point trying to appease extremists.
so, he’s not provoking the extremists then, good.
"We have to put an end to this story that we can talk to these people. They only want to humiliate people. Full stop. And what are we becoming? The civilization of melted butter?" Calderoli said.
THE CIVILIZATION OF MELTED BUTTER!! MUST BE A ROTATING TITLE!
The publication of the cartoons in some European newspapers, including one showing an image of the prophet with a bomb for a turban, have provoked widespread anger in the Muslim world.
really? But looking coldly at the numbers and places it’s not that bad. How many are they supposed to be? 1.2 billions? Umhh…arab street is a lil’silent really, they’re not even burning cars in France!
Many Muslims believe it is blasphemous to depict the Prophet and there have been a number of violent protests in the Middle East and Asia.
but how many beyond the usual few places? Those are the same protesters of the alleged Koran abuses.
The Northern League, which is gearing up for an April general election, has leapt on the controversy to promote its own far-right political agenda.
Far right? The Northern League? Rsrsrsrssrsrsr these are mostly peasants, mountain people and villagers!
The League has long led the charge against illegal immigration and its leaders say the cartoon violence shows the dangers of allowing Muslim immigrants to settle in Italy.
and prove them wrong please?
"This is only the tip of the iceberg of the religious war Islamist extremists have declared on us," Calderoli told reporters earlier this month.
and he’s right
The Italian press reported that Berlusconi last week urged Calderoli to take a more moderate stance over the issue, but the minister said on Tuesday he had no intention of keeping quiet.
and this is a lot more than 90% of the West politicians
"As for Berlusconi, seeing as he has compared himself to Jesus Christ, I would call on him to follow Christ's example and think about evangelizing Christian values and not be evangelized by Islam," Calderoli was quoted as saying.
where’s papijoe?
Berlusconi caused a storm at the weekend when he said: "I am the Jesus Christ of politics...I sacrifice myself for everyone."
It was a joking methaphor. Can you honestly though, run a country with this kind of media attention? This trivial? Doesn’t this, in a way, resemble what’s happening with Dick Cheney and the guy he shot by accident? With all the problems in the world, what twisted and stupid and obtuse journalism is that? Who cares? It’s an accident!
Maintaining a steady stream of anti-foreigner invective, Calderoli earlier this month dismissed a Palestinian journalist on a television chat show, as: "that suntanned lady." He also said he was delighted newcomers to Italy would not benefit from a government scheme to encourage people to have more children.
We’re not stupid, are we...
"I am proud of the fact that the baby bonus will only go to Italian citizens. I say to all those Ali Babas that either Allah or their governments will have to think of them."
It’s all in the Koran, no?
The League's anti-immigrant stance has found a sympathetic audience in the wealthy north of Italy, where many third world immigrants have settled in recent years. League politicians say the immigrants are responsible for growing crime rates and are also challenging Italians for jobs.
which we haven’t got many in the first place.
Latest opinion polls say the League will get up to six percent of the vote in the April election against just 3.9 percent in the 2001 ballot. However, it is not clear what part the anti-immigrant rhetoric has played in this increase.
Yep, all true. We’re not playing Dhimmi very well in Italy.
Ciao ciao
