Name the Food
In Iran, danish pastries are now known as "Roses of the Prophet Mohammad", because no one is allowed to make fun of their "beloved and respected Prophet" as a cake-shop owner in Tehran said. If this guy doesn't see the potential for fun making when eating a rose of the Prophet Mohammad, we really can't help him on this blog.

However, we can make up names for other foods. And not boring stuff like "freedom fries" - which should have been called "spineless fries" in my opinion, since that resembles reality more accurately - but fun names, like oh, I don't know...Lamb-of-God-chops, Adam's Rib-Eye, Eve's Apple Pie, Moses' Froglegs, Mary's Immaculate Confections, ok, ok, I'll stop.

Loving Stalin
In Gori, Georgia, Stalin's hometown, some elderly Jews have fond memories of Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili. It's difficult for most of us to understand why people who have suffered such persecution would worship the man who ordered it, but I think the following explanation is probably the most accurate:
“In the long run, the worst legacy of Stalinism is not the tendency to throw someone in prison first and ask questions later," writes Adam Hochschild, author of “The Unquiet Ghost: Russians Remember Stalin."

“It is the habits of mind, among those not directly affected, that make such acts even thinkable," he wrote. “After such an experience, the message such survivors have always given their children is Keep your head down. Over time, stark fear turned into passivity."

Regardless of why they say what they say today about Stalin and his era, the older generation has come to link democracy with heartless capitalism, endemic crime, and a daily struggle for survival and dignity.

The simple fact is that Western concepts like “human rights" and “freedom" sound like a luxury to those denied a more essential right to food and security.

Starving Hamas Out
According to the NYT, the State Department and Israel plan to bring down Hamas shortly by cutting off funds until another election is called and they're kicked out. Basically, a form of economic sanctions on an Islamic regime that has no oil to export. The extent of Palestinian dependence on external funding is supposed to make this a sure thing, but Hamas is already soliciting alternative sources of funding from the Arab world, and the Arab world is flush with cash right now from high oil prices. I don't see this working very well at all, in the end.

A conditional acceptance of an apology
Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars and imam of the Omara mosque in Doha, Qatar, said that he accepted an apology from an inter-faith Norwegian delegation for the offence caused by the publication of the Mohammed cartoons, but the apology is not enough. He said that Arab countries will end their boycott of Scandinavian products only if Norway passes a blasphemy law. Pakistan has a blasphemy law, it works well in intimidating Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

And speaking of Pakistan, so far the response to the cartoons has involved burning down fast-food restaurants, shops selling music and videos, movie theaters, the offices of the main mobile phone company, a branch of Citibank and a bus terminal operated by a South Korean business. I wonder how Christians are faring in Pakistan these last few days.

18 minutes of work a day
Thousands of garbage collectors and childcare workers are striking in Germany, not for salary increases, but to protest plans increasing the work week from the current 38.5 hours to 40. That's 18 minutes of extra work per day (or two weeks of work per year) with no extra pay. I feel your pain, German public sector employees, and I would like to say "welcome to the real world".
The labor feud comes as the Germany and Europe are slowly turning its back on the dream of shorter work weeks. The 35-hour week had even been introduced in a number of sectors across the continent. But that is rapidly fading into history. In the early 1990s, the chemical industry cast aside the 37.5 hour work week in favor of longer working hours. Siemens managed to squeeze a 40 hour work week out of its workers in 2004 negotiations by threatening them with major job losses should the electronics firm be forced to move factories out of the country. Carmaker DaimlerChrysler bumped working hours up the same year. Indeed, whereas the average worker put in less than 36 hours a week in 2003, according to Germany's Federal Statistics Office, by 2005, it was 37.9 hours per week.

Even many Volkswagen workers, which have, until now enjoyed something of a special status among industry workers in Germany with their 28.8 hour week, are facing longer hours. The introduction of such a short week was, in the early 1990s, considered a possible model for the future. But it was also a way to avoid mass lay-offs. And now, with falling profits largely due -- according to the company leadership -- to high labor costs in Germany, they want workers to put in seven hours more a week -- without extra compensation.

Pappy Boyington's just not good enough for his alma mater
SHAME!
The University of Washington's student senate rejected a memorial for alumnus Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame amid concerns a military hero who shot down enemy planes was not the right kind of person to represent the school.

Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."

Here's Pappy's Medal of Honor citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR to MAJOR GREGORY BOYINGTON UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE for service as set forth in the following CITATION
For extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty as Commanding Officer of Marine Fighting Squadron TWO FOURTEEN in action against enemy Japanese forces in Central Solomons Area from 12 September 1943 to 3 January 1944. Consistently outnumbered throughout successive hazardous flights over heavily defended hostile territory, Major Boyington struck at the enemy with daring and courageous persistence, leading his squadron into combat with devastating results to Japanese shipping, shore installations and aerial forces. Resolute in his efforts to inflict crippling damage on the enemy, Major Boyington led a formation of twenty-four fighters over Kahili on 17 October and, persistently circling the airdrome where sixty hostile aircraft were grounded, boldly challenged the Japanese to send up planes. Under his brilliant command, our fighters shot down twenty enemy craft in the ensuing action without the loss of a single ship. A superb airman and determined fighter against overwhelming odds, Major Boyington personally destroyed 26 of the many Japanese planes shot down by his squadron and by his forceful leadership developed the combat readiness in his command which was a distinctive factor in the Allied aerial achievements in this vitally strategic area.
