Fay & Matt get hitched
As many of you are no doubt aware, our beloved Fay and RadioMattM are finally tying the knot and getting official, after a years-long romance. The happy ceremony is at 5 pm tomorrow, at a friend's house in Vancouver, British Columbia. Here's a thread to celebrate the happy bride and groom and drink to them :-) Fay and Matt, we love you, and this is so beautiful. Cheers, darlings!

Rumor has it that floranista and Thousand Sons plan on crashing the party; more news as it develops.

The soundtrack for this before-party is this fun, funny reggae cover of the "I'm getting married in the morning" song from My Fair Lady.

Evo and the War on Drugs
Evo Morales has good intentions for his country; he rose from poverty to become the first indigenous president of Bolivia, he has a reputation for being an honest and incorruptible politician and his people adore him. He also refuses to limit coca production, not surprising for a coca union leader and not surprising for a country where coca is a way of life.
It is too early to say exactly what Morales and MAS will do. He appointed his cabinet only last week but already alarm bells have begun to ring; the minister responsible for the economy is Carlos Villegas, a leftwing academic from the San Andrés University in La Paz. And the person in charge of fighting narco-trafficking? Felipe Caceres, a coca growers' union leader. Is this, then, the dawn of the world's first narco state? Morales says it is not.
He may say it's not but according to the United Nations Office of Drug Control, over 36,000 tons of coca leaf were produced in Bolivia in 2004, out of which 25,000 tons were available for cocaine production. Without narco-trafficking, many Bolivian people would starve.

Got this in my e-mail at work--an albino whitetail deer fawn. Apparently, albino deer are very rare, something like one in a 100,000.

Cutting your nose to spite your face
Pakistan's health minister announced that Pakistan will ban the import of medicines from "offending countries", in other words any countries where the cartoons depicting Mohammed were published. So, let's see... that would include France, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Indonesia, Yemen, Egypt, Jordan, New Zealand, Malaysia, um... am I forgetting anyone? It's sad to not be able to include the US media on this list.
The move could have implications for the European component in the Pakistan earthquake relief effort. In response to the cartoons, the six-party religious alliance, MMA, has also told Adnkronos International (AKI) that it is planning a "million man march" in Karachi in March to protest the publication of the cartoons which Muslims consider blasphemous.
I wonder how many Pakistanis will die as a result of this ban.

Living in lies: Infidoodles & American media cowardice
Tony Blankley makes an excellent point about the lack of bravery, and self-righteous blindness, of mainstream US media outlets in refusing to print the infidoodles.
But, of course, the appeasement did not buy peace, it only encouraged further Nazi aggression — because Nazi demands were unlimited and non-negotiable.*

"The [Islamists] call Jews and Christians inferior, and we say they're just exercising their freedom of speech ... Islamists don't allow their critics the same rights … After the West prostrates itself, the [Islamists] will be more than happy to say that Allah has made the infidels spineless."

Like the Czechoslovakian green grocer, the mighty American media doesn't want to think itself spineless. So they close their eyes, rationalize their fear and call it the responsible thing to do.
*remind you of anyone?

If only they had terrorized artists a little more...
Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah: "If any Muslim had carried out the fatwa of Imam Khomeini against the apostate Salman Rushdie, those despicable people would not have dared to insult the Prophet Muhammad - not in Denmark, not in Norway, and not in France. Mr Nasrallah also explains what hypocrisy is:
"For example, a few years ago, a great French philosopher, Roger Garaudy, wrote a scientific book. He did not offend, curse, or insult anyone. He wrote a scientific research of an academic nature, in which he discussed the alleged Jewish Holocaust in Germany. He proved that this Holocaust is a myth. The great French philosopher Roger Garaudy was put to trial. He was offended and humiliated. It did him no good that freedom of expression is considered a human right in France. Why? Because freedom of expression extends to the Jews, but it does not extend to the Prophet of 1.4 billion Muslims. That's hypocrisy.
Am I misreading this or is he saying that Garaudy is the Prophet of 1.4 billion Muslims?

Collaborators Sweating in the Slightly-Less-August Chamber
Some principled members of the House* plan on making Yahoo! and Google sweat a little bit over their shameful conduct in China. Yahoo! is behaving far worse than Google. Google is merely censoring search results; Yahoo! is turning dissident journalists over to the secret police so they can rot in the gulag for such terrible crimes against society as trying to join the China Democracy Party. Next week, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Cisco and Google representatives will be grilled by the House's Subcommittee on Human Rights. Leading the charge to force amoral techno-guppies with dollar signs in their eyes to uphold American values abroad are representatives Smith (R) and Lantos (D), who both have a lot of credibility on the issue of Chinese human rights.
