Please come back, white people!
Shocka! After leading Zimbabwe into chaos, after seizing land from white farmers and laying it to waste, after imposing mass evictions on the poor and after completely ruining Zimbabwe's economy, Mugabe now has a change of heart. I hope no one takes him up on his offer and I hope he chokes.

zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
The Portrait Munich Paints
Heather Robinson has some excellent reasons to like Spielberg's "Munich"-ones that I instinctively felt, but was unable to articulate fully. Maybe the movie underwhelmed the bloggie audience because we take some of its most powerful lessons for granted. But many who see it, nurtured on a diet of anti-Zionism and "Israelis are just like Nazis" propaganda, don't have the benefit of knowing what Israelis are really like and the media won't ever portray Israeli humanity with such a powerful voice as Spielberg's.
Yet even if the story is fiction, "Munich" may be, to paraphrase Picasso, a lie that tells several truths. The first is that Israelis do not target civilians, and in fact go to exhaustive lengths to avoid hurting them. The Israeli assassination team's second hit is Mahmoud Hamshari, a Palestine Liberation Organization spokesman who is also a terrorist recruiter. The Israelis wire his phone with explosives that can detonate only by remote, so that they can control the exact timing of the explosion.

To ensure the safety of Hamshari's wife and daughter, the team waits until the two have left the apartment. The ill-timed arrival of a truck prevents the Israeli team from seeing that the wife and daughter, having forgotten something, have returned to the apartment. When one team member, Carl, hears the daughter pick up the phone, his panic--and that of Avner--is palpable. They race to abort the mission and avoid killing the child as if their own lives depend on it. Mr. Spielberg has done a service in presenting a mass audience with this scene, as it is consistent with the attitudes of most Israelis and reflects the policies of the Israel Defense Forces, which go to great lengths to avoid harming civilians.

Second, this portion of the film illuminates the different ways Israelis and Palestinians value the lives of their children. Avner's concern for the safety of his own wife and baby daughter is paramount in the film. In contrast, while predicting the ultimate destruction of Israel, the Palestinian character Ali says that it doesn't matter if it takes hundreds of years, because "we have a lot of children, and they'll have children," who can be sacrificed to the cause. This attitude that one's children's lives aren't worth the price of compromise is one of the major stumbling blocks to peace in the Middle East, and one of the major differences, at present, between Israelis and many Palestinian Arabs.

Finally, Avner, the film's protagonist, kills not for the sake of glory or to destroy, but to punish the athletes' murderers and to deter future terrorism. He kills not with exultation, but with simple determination to do what must be done. Eventually, he suffers psychologically. The film does raise questions about the efficacy and morality of a violent response to the Munich atrocity. But contrary to the claims of some pundits, to discerning viewers it does not suggest a simplistic "moral equivalency" between Palestinian terrorist masterminds and Israeli counterterrorism agents.

And while "Munich" respects Palestinians' quest for self-determination, it does not imply terrorism is ever a legitimate or effective means of achieving it. Because for all their self-doubt, the Israeli team members do carry out their mission--and they are the film's heroes.

Chirac threatens to nuke...America?
This TechCentralStation article is arguing that if you read between the lines, Chirac wasn't threatening Iran in his recent, much-ballyhooed "we'll respond to terrorism with nukes" speech, but the United States (!).

I don't buy it. But Mark Steyn does, in a way-France the world's third nuclear Islamic power? He makes some great points about the difference between America's multiculturalism and Europe's biculturalism. An oldie but a goodie.

'We are sorry'
A group of Muslims living in Arab nations have started a website apologising for the violence against Denmark and Norway. Check out their site, sorrynorwaydenmark.com.
Ahmad said that the group behind the site is diverse and far from in agreement about everything, but that they felt a strong need to do something after seeing the various violent reactions to the caricatures.

"Because of the oppression of authorities and lack of freedom, many in the Muslim world are afraid to say what they mean. So the stage is left to those who scream loudest and are violent," Ahmad said.

The web site was at first visited primarily by Arabs and Muslims but as word spread it also became a point of interest for European web surfers.

Incompetent Republican appointee's actions leave US unprepared to handle nuclear terrorism's aftermath with the only effective drug in existence
I have a hard time defending this man on any grounds other than that perhaps the company in question is overstating its case. Hollis-Eden developed a drug that treats radiation sickness incredibly effectively, dramatically increasing survival rates of those who are exposed to the incredible levels of radiation that a nuclear bomb would bring with a single injection. They expected the federal government to buy about ten million doses and distribute them throughout the nation. The federal government picked up one-hundredth of that number. Why? Perhaps...another “Michael Brown" type of incompetent appointee.

Maybe this company is making noise because they're money-hungry. I doubt it. The reason I doubt it is because the Pentagon is incredibly enthusiastic about this drug, and wants it for the troops. If the Pentagon thinks it's effective, and clinical trials show it to be effective, then why is the government not buying enough of it for it to be useful if an American city is attacked with a nuclear weapon?

Zhirinovsky, get your facts straight
Russian ultranationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky believes the U.S. will attack Iran in March. More specifically, he said the date for the strike is "known", it's March 28, the day of the Israeli elections. He also said that the publication of the ferkakta Mohammed cartoons was a planned action by the U.S. in order "to provoke a row between Europe and the Islamic world".

It's obvious that Vladimir is confused. The US is bombing Iran on the 28th of March not because of some elections in some unknown little country, but because that's when Astro Boy returns to the US!

Varying responses to the Danish cartoon kerfuffle prove the Bush Doctrine is working
Compare and contrast:

In liberated Iraq, Ayatollah Sistani, the top Shiite cleric in the land, said this about the Danish cartoons:
Iraq's leading Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, condemned the publications as a "horrific action."

But in remarks posted on his Web site, al-Sistani referred to "misguided and oppressive" segments of the Muslim community whose actions "projected a distorted and dark image of the faith of justice, love and brotherhood."
In free Lebanon, the government actually apologized to Denmark!
Lebanon apologized to Denmark _ where the cartoons were first published _ a day after protesters set fire to a building housing the Danish mission in Beirut. The attack "harmed Lebanon's reputation and its civilized image," Lebanese Information Minister Ghazi Aridi said.
I don't think I need to bother with finding links about how the Muslims in unfree nations like Syria and Iran are behaving. I just thought this was a very interesting and revealing phenomenon, one that revives my faith in the value and wisdom of bringing democratic self-rule to the Middle East.

adele has a fascinating link. It sounds like the Saudis, the biggest anti-democrats of all, are directly responsible for the dramatic escalation of hostilities in the cartoon kerfuffle.
