zorkmidden in Discarded Lies:
A Theological Dialogue
I'm for anything that works in combating terrorism yet I consider the idea of using dialogue as a weapon inane at best. But what if?
When Judge Hamoud al-Hitar announced that he and four other Islamic scholars would challenge Yemen's Al Qaeda prisoners to a theological contest, Western antiterrorism experts warned that this high-stakes gamble would end in disaster.

Nervous as he faced five captured, yet defiant, Al Qaeda members in a Sanaa prison, Judge Hitar was inclined to agree. But banishing his doubts, the youthful cleric threw down the gauntlet, in the hope of bringing peace to his troubled homeland.

"If you can convince us that your ideas are justified by the Koran, then we will join you in your struggle," Hitar told the militants. "But if we succeed in convincing you of our ideas, then you must agree to renounce violence."

The prisoners eagerly agreed.

Now, two years later, not only have those prisoners been released, but a relative peace reigns in Yemen. And the same Western experts who doubted this experiment are courting Hitar, eager to hear how his "theological dialogues" with captured Islamic militants have helped pacify this wild and mountainous country, previously seen by the US as a failed state, like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Protected, Even If Unpopular
Ward Churchill is in no danger of losing his tenured position:
Legal experts on free speech in the academic workplace are betting that Ward Churchill's job is safe - at least against attempts to oust him because of his opinions.

Although some members of the public have said that Churchill shouldn't be allowed to work for the taxpayer-supported University of Colorado, he actually is safer there than at a private university, according to Denver lawyer David Miller, former legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado and now in private practice.
"If the Constitution doesn't protect against the most offensive kinds of theories or arguments - and let us talk more about them so that members of the public can hear every side of an issue and make their choices as to what beliefs they should or shouldn't trust or act on - then the value of our Constitution is lessened," Miller said.
I don't see this as a First Amendment issue. Yes, the U.S. Constitution protects even hateful idiots - and I wouldn't have it any other way - but this guy is teaching eighteen-year-olds and he has a moral and ethical responsibility to them; promoting casual anti-Semitism shouldn't be part of it. Frontpage has an excellent article on Ward Churchill and the Politics of Campus Extremism

Prohibition in the Netherlands
Imagine the principal of your son's high school telling him he's not allowed to have the American flag on his backpack because it would anger the Mexican students. Ok, I'm being facetious about the American flag and Mexican students. However in Holland...
Cals College in IJsselstein has prohibited two of it's students to have Dutch flags on their bags.

The 16 year old boy and his friend where told by the director of their school that they "urgently should consider" to remove the Dutch flags from their bags, it could provoke other students, mainly Moroccan students. The two considered the urgent request of the school as a prohibition.

How's This for Chutzpah?
At the international counterterrorism conference - Israel was not invited - Iran says Bush is the terrorist, Syria is saying Israel is the terrorist and the Saudi Islamic Affairs Minister issued an edict condemning suicide bombings as an act of terror. But he added that if they were done while "fighting occupation," then it's ok. From Clarity & Resolve: How to Call a Spade a Spade
As representatives from more than fifty states meet in the belly of the jihad beast to have a little chat about terrorism, one thing is clear: Not everyone is very clear on who should be called a terrorist.

militarybrathusband: Honey, I'm done vacuuming and I've put the dishes away. Would you like me to bring you the bonbons now?

militarybrat: No, I'm bored with bonbons, let's do pushups.

militarybrathusband: Yes, dear.

militarybrat: And then we'll take a short 10-mile jog by the gym.

militarybrathusband: Yes, dear. (Eyes the bonbons. Eats one hurriedly while militarybrat is starting on their one-hand pushups.)

Meanwhile, in the barn...

Gustav: Achtung Ali, vat is that?

Ali: Oh Gustav, vat, vat? vat is it? You're scaring me!

Gustav: Someone vas looking through the vindow!

Ali: Oh Gustav, hold me!

Cut to outside in a green field, children and dogs playing happily...A spaceship lands silently in their midst. The door opens and a tall, decisive man steps out.

Tall, decisive man: psst, kid...

militarybratkid: Hey, you're back! I told my mom you'd be back!

Tall, decisive man: Oh man! You weren't supposed to tell! What did she say?

militarybratkid: She asked me why I was wearing a bra on my head.

Tall, decisive man: Oh ok, good, so she thinks it's a bra.

militarybratkid: Yeah man, don't worry, she's got no idea what it really is.

Tall, decisive man: Ok, so we're safe. Say...you got any potatoes?

militarybratkid: They got some in the diner. Why are you always eating potatoes?

Tall, decisive man: Sigh...it's a long story...I'll tell you during our intergalactic trip.

militarybratkid: So what's your name, mister?

Tall, decisive man: There's so many of me, I can't keep our names straight, kid. Call me Thousand Sons for short.

To be continued...
